During the late 1980s when Michael Eisner was still new at Disney and looking for ways to expand the company. A few years before The Living Seas had opened at EPCOT Center to compete with Sea World and now Universal was opening a new park. Michael Eisner liked the proposed Great Movie Ride for the show business pavilion for EPCOT Center’s Future World West so much that he decided to build an entirely new park around it, Disney’s MGM Studios. In the original plans, when the ride was going to be at Epcot, it was going to have the name “Great Moments at the Movies”. The Great Movie ride actually used a ride system very similar to the Universe of Energy attraction at EPCOT Center. The ride was a specular 22 minute ride through the movies including: Footlight Parade, Singin’ in the Rain, Mary Poppins, The Public Enemy, Clint Eastwood and John Wayne westerns, Alien, Indiana Jones, horror films, Tarzan, Casablanca, Fantasia, and The Wizard of Oz. Unfortunately, The Great Movie Ride closed on August 13, 2017 and in 2020 was replaced by the uncreative Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway. °•° Here are some fun facts about The Great Movie Ride: •In the Indiana Jones scene, there was a wall of hieroglyphics; on that wall were pictures of Donald and Mickey and well as C3PO and R2D2. •The Fantasia scene almost wasn’t in the ride. It was originally intended to be the tornado scene from The Wizard of Oz, hence the blowing wind however, due to a contractual agreement with MGM, Disney could only use two scenes from the movie instead of three. •If you had a B show (the gangster scene, the car’s license plate was 021-429, a reference to the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre on February 14, 1929. •A well-known fact is that the plane in the Casablanca scene was cut in half; the back part of the plane is still visible today at Magic Kingdom on The Jungle Cruise. Happy Earth Day! 🌎 Did you know that Disney’s Animal Kingdom is the largest theme park in the world? It’s approximately 580 acres and is home to 2,000 animals from around the world! The Tree of Life is 145 feet tall and has over 300 intricately carved animals on its trunk and branches. We woke up early to get to Animal Kingdom on our last trip and walked onto rides by 7 am! The Kilimanjaro Safari opened at 8:30 am and we barely had any wait! It’s our family’s favorite and I loved seeing all the animals up close. That night Walt made for himself the memory of which he’d been robbed Since two times he’d tried to float down the real rivers of America and two times he missed the boat, once by a strike and again by a Great Depression. I wonder if his resolve to have such a steamboat giving endless rides on sparkling rivers was a gift to us that no one should feel the disappointment of missing the boat like he once did because it will just come around again. ✨Walt Wednesday ✨ Did you know that the movie ‘The Princess & The Frog’ was entirely hand drawn? {although they did use the modern technology that was at their disposal}. It helped to bring back some chaos to the musical numbers & some frenetic energy to the characters. Due to the whole film being hand drawn, with some digital effects to help the process along, it took over 3 and half years to complete. This is a massive amount of time and shows the dedication of the crew behind the piece. The process would have taken so long because of the love that was behind all of the drawings. It needed to be done right to recapture the magic of some of Disney’s earlier days, although it would have been a lot easier now that so many new techniques have been introduced. Tiana herself is quite different from some of the other Disney princesses. Her background is quite different & her struggles are unique. While others have dealt with negative treatment from parental figures, the loss of family or even the huge expectations of being a member of a royal line of heritage, Tiana has to deal with some even more relatable issues: she has a dream but can’t afford it, nor can her family afford much else. She does what anyone else in the real world would do in her situations. She gets a job & she works hard. This may not sound that groundbreaking but she is actually the first & only Disney princess to work a proper job! While the rest have been seen to be doing chores or perhaps contributing to their community, none of them have been in paid employment in order to get by.
