I stand with @buffystemarie. Questions regarding her DNA aside, Buffy has championed for Indigenous people, Indigenous culture, and Indigenous rights her entire career. She inspired countless Indigenous youth and has given them a voice. For over SIXTY YEARS, she has done this. THAT is real. Attempting to discredit her at 82 does less damage to her than to the tremendous number of Indigenous people who have looked up to her. It appears as though CBC’s investigation is attempting to tear down one of our most prominent Indigenous voices. Why now? I question the motivation behind this investigation. This photo was from when I met the iconic singer/songwriter at the airport in Whitehorse a few years back. #buffysaintemarie #istandwithbuffy #legend #indigenous #indigenousicon #indigenousmusic #indigenousculture #indigenousart

Actor, author and revered Victorian Aboriginal elder Uncle Jack Charles has died aged 79. NOTE: This story uses Uncle Jack Charles's name and image with the permission of his family. In a statement, his publicist said the Boon Wurrung, Dja Dja Wurrung, Woiwurrung and Yorta Yorta man, who also had links to several other clans across south-eastern Australia, passed away peacefully this morning at the Royal Melbourne Hospital after suffering a stroke. In a career spanning several decades, the Stolen Generations survivor used his creative platforms to share painful and personal truths about the brutal impact of government policies on his community. He also worked with the late Uncle Archie Roach to support Indigenous prisoners. Uncle Jack remained highly active into his later years, starring in ABC TV series Cleverman and appearing in SBS's Who Do You Think You Are? program last year, where he discovered the identity of his father and his family's ties to more Aboriginal nations across Victoria and Tasmania. "Before he passed away, his family were able to send him off on Country during a smoking ceremony at the Royal Melbourne Hospital," the statement said. "We are so proud of everything he has achieved in his remarkable life — Elder, actor, musician, potter, activist, mentor, a household name and voice loved by all — as is demonstrated by his numerous awards including this year's NAIDOC Male Elder of the Year. "He will live on in our hearts and memories and through his numerous screen and stage roles. "May he be greeted by his Ancestors on his return home." What is your favourite role or memory of Uncle Jack? 🖤💛❤️ #UncleJackCharles #AustralianIcon #IndigenousIcon

*SOLD* Stamped brass hand sawn cuff with Wilma Mankiller quarter. Wilma Mankiller was the first female Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation, also the first woman to be elected as chief of a major native tribe. She spent her life fighting for indigenous rights, and I was pleasantly surprised to see her face shining up at me in a handful of change! Coin is attached with industrial strength adhesive, and shouldn’t go anywhere unless it has too much contact with hot water. Available, DM to claim. We’re a bit late with our #matriarchmonday posting due to issues with Instagram today but better late than never!! After the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we’re focusing on a Mi’kmaq Matriarch whose work led to what became the largest class-action lawsuit in Canadian history. Meet Nora Bernard, who, after witnessing so much injustice towards her community, became an activist who sought compensation for survivors of the residential school system in 2005. She represented around 79,000 survivors for upwards of $5 billion. Although Bernard faced many hardships along the way, she was described as a grandma to all, and a woman who stood for truth. Let’s learn about this Mi’kmaq elder together today, and don’t forget to come back next Monday for another amazing Matriarch!

Welcome to this week’s #matriarchmondays! I have known this amazing Matriarch for 2 decades and have always been so inspired by her generosity of time and spirit. She is still going strong even in retirement! 💪 Recognized as one of the culinary Matriarchs of Indigenous food, Cree and Métis chef Bertha Skye has a legacy worth celebrating. 👩‍🍳 Best known for her award-winning Three Sisters Soup, which she used to compete as the only woman in the all-Indigenous team that represented Canada at the 1992 World Culinary Olympics. 🍲 That dish won gold, and the team returned with even medals, the most of any team. 🥇 Most recently, Skye works as the Elder-in-Residence in post-secondary schools, guiding students with support, Indigenous traditions, and healthy meals. ❣️ As we learn about Matriarch Bertha Skye this week, we hope you’ll come back next week to see who our next feature on Matriarch Monday will be! ♀️

For our 12th week of Matriarch Mondays, we present to you the story of Molly Brant, a Mohawk leader, Loyalist, and diplomat, who consulted British forces and served as an intermediary between the Iroquois during the American Revolutionary War. While some criticise her as a Loyalist, others recognize her as an independent, female Indigenous leader, who used her skills to bridge two cultures and ensure the survival of her people. ♀️ While she has no existing portraits, execpt through renderings, she remains an influential figure in Kingston, Ontario where she settled after the war. In 1994, she was honoured as a Person of National Historic Significance, then in 1995, the city of Kingston proclaimed August 25th as Molly Brant Commemoration Day, and in 2016, an school was named after her. Swipe through to read about this Matriarch and come back next week for more amazing Indigenous women who inspired our Matriarch collection! 🕯️

In celebration of her career retrospective this week at @tiff_net, we honour the life of internationally distinguished Indigenous director, singer, artist, and activist Alanis Obomsawin this Matriarch Monday. She began her career as a professional singer and storyteller before her position at the @onf_nfb in 1967 took her on the path to become one of Canada’s most distinguished documentary filmmakers. 🎬🎥 Her productions give a voice to those who have been dismissed and ignored, to address the struggles and experiences of Indigenous peoples in Canada. 💜🧡 For her work, Obomsawin was named a Companion to the Order of Canada as well as a Grand Officer of the Ordre national du Québec, and won a Prix Albert-Tessier, multiple Governor General’s Awards, lifetime achievement awards, and honorary degrees. To read more about “Celebrating Alanis Obomsawin,” visit our Stories and here: https://www.tiff.net/films?series=alanis&list ✨ And see you next week for our next Matriarch Monday, where we learn about the wonderful Indigenous women in our history and their remarkable feats, all of which inspired our Matriarch scent! ♀️

On today’s Matriarch Monday, we learn about Indigenous activist, WW2 veteran, and elder in the Alberta Métis community, Bertha Clark-Jones, OC. Determined, compassionate, and hard working, she spent her life advocating for the rights of Indigenous people in Canada, after seeing the injustices fellow Indigenous veterans faced. Clark-Jones formed several organizations, including the NWAC @nwac_canada (Native Women's Association of Canada), of which she was the first president. For her work, she has a Golden Jubilee Medal, Diamond Jubilee Medal, Lifetime Achievement Award from @indspire, and an Officer of the Order of Canada. 💜🧡 For the previous posts of amazing Matriarchs that inspired our candle line, take a look at our Matriarch Monday guide! ♀️

This week, meet the iconic Mary Two-Axe Earley, a Mohawk activist for Indigenous women’s rights. Her life was dedicated to restoring the Indian status of Indigenous women as she advocated for legislation to help women retain their Indian status and the ability to participate in cultural, and political life on reserves — after marrying her Irish-American husband took away hers. Two-Axe Earley fought for the principle that a woman’s identity is not defined by marriage nor her husband, and after a lifetime of hard work, she became the first woman to regain her Indian status in 1985. She paved the way for thousands of Indigenous women and their descendants for the same right to status, and became the “Grandmother of the Canadian Indigenous Feminist Movement.” Read about this week’s compassionate and powerful Matriarch, and visit us next Monday to continue discovering the Indigenous women who inspired our Matriarch candle! Discovery Day is a Yukon holiday that takes place on the third Monday of every August, commemorating the gold discovery that led to the Klondike Gold Rush. This year, we are recognizing the history of the Tagish people who first discovered the gold in Yukon. Names associated with the Gold Rush you often hear are Keish (Skookum Jim Mason), K̲áa Goox̱ (Dawson Charlie), and George Carmack, but one key figure who gets overlooked is Shaaw Tláa, also known as Kate Carmack. She was a Tagish woman, part of the group that encountered gold in the Klondike River in 1896. Shaaw Tláa is sometimes credited as the first person who made the actual discovery. On this Discovery Day, let’s discover Shaaw Tláa’s story of how she was often erased from history because of her race and gender, and how people have honoured her and her contributions only after her death. Look through the slides for more on this Matriarch and check out at the Matriarch Monday Guide on our profile for all posts on this series so far. Be sure to come back next week for another wonderful Indigenous woman who inspired our Matriarch line! ♀️❤️♀️

8/16/2021, 8:21:00 PM

For International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, we bring the story of a very special woman for this week’s Matriarch Monday. Angela Sidney (née Johns) was a Tagish storyteller who focused on traditional Tagish folklore, legends, and documentations of southern Yukon. She received the Order of Canada in 1986 for her linguistics and ethnography contributions, which made her the first Native woman from Yukon to hold that title. ♀️ Read through our slides to learn about this Matriarch’s life and, if you haven’t already, check out our Matriarch candle line inspired by amazing Indigenous women like Sidney! See you next week for our next installment of Matriarch Monday! 💪💪🏻💪🏼💪🏽💪🏾💪🏿 To read her book “Tagish Tlaagú”, check the link in our stories or copy and paste this: http://ynlc.ca/languages/tagish/Tagish_Stories_by_Angela_Sidney_1982.pdf. 🧡❤️

Kinda Interesting Things #22: The Crazy Horse Memorial aka A Monument to the Lakota Man Who Fought US Settlers If you go to the Black Hills in South Dakota, you’ll often hear about Mount Rushmore, the iconic monument built on stolen indigenous land. But 17 miles away, there’s the Crazy Horse Memorial, honoring the 19th century Lakota war leader who defended the indigenous land from US settlers. It was commissioned by a Lakota chief, Henry Standing Bear, and built by sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski and his family. Construction of the monument began in 1948 and it’s still being worked on to this day. Once completed, the monument will dwarf Mount Rushmore and will be the second largest sculpture in the world. The monument is supported by private financing and paying visitors, and takes no public or federal funds. I went on a little road trip through the North. So you’ll be seeing a couple of interesting things throughout the US. Follow me if you want. Our story began in the heart of the Diné (Navajo) Nation when our creator Yang, first hand experienced the atrocities of her community. She noticed not many people brought awareness to these injustices on the reservation, so she created a brand that will uplift and promote positive growth to Indigenous communities. Our purpose is to bring awareness to injustices happening on the reservation right now and help educate the people through visual representation on clothing. Our Mission is to empower our people to protect our culture and homelands. Through donating to this go fund me you are helping Us create beautiful change in our community for future generations to come. Any amount helps! Aheéhee' Thank you! ❤ Link in Bio #Indigenousiconcompany #Indigenousicon

Smudging these gifted beauties for ritual and healing work. This sacred Kookaburra had been hit by a car, and I couldn't leave him on the road to be repeatedly run over. He gifted me his wings in return. Such a blessing from one of my totems too. #kookaburra #kookaburramedicine #spiritanimal #animaltotem #respect #indigenoushealing #indigenousicon #birdspirit #manamedicine #yogaspiritjourneys #selenite #crystals #crystalhealing #loveallcreatures #weareone #thankscarlythomas
