In 1378, Richard scrope the first baron of Bolton was in the service of Richard II when he received permission to build Bolton Castle. 4 years later in 1382 John Neville was also to obtain a licence to build a Castle, Sheriff Hutton. Using the same master mason John Lewyn they both followed a quadrangular design with the 4 corner towers creating an inner courtyard. Another connection between the two castles: John Scrope, 5th baron of Bolton was a Yorkist, he fought for Richard Neville the father of Anne who was married to Richard III. John Scrope was also a supporter of Richard III fighting for him at Bosworth, one of his few supporters to survive. A ceremonial gate, a gem of architectural perfection, a fortress, a prison and the first image of a rhino in Western Europe - this is Belem Tower in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon. The tower was built in the 16th century -the Height of the Portuguese Renaissance - on a basaltic island in the mouth of the Tagus river. The style is Late Gothic Manueline. Technically, the structure consists of a bastion and a 4-storey 30m tall tower. Look closer while there and you will see signs of the Order of Christs, zoomorphic motifs, images of beasts and twisted ropes that hint to Portuguese geographical discoveries.
