She was Henry VIII’s second wife, who captivated him to such an extent that after exhausting multiple avenues to separate himself from his Catholic Queen Catherine, he broke away from the Catholic Church and formed the Church of England to marry her. RESTORATION - William Waldorf Astor, the richest man in America, purchased Hever Castle in 1903. I got a reminder to say it's been 10 years since me and @enginerd.dan took our first trip together. We travelled to Hever castle after only knowing each other for a couple of weeks in April 2014. That was a very special trip, which is why we did a roadtrip down to Hever for our second wedding anniversary. Castle # 3/148 - Hever! Home of Anne Boleyn before she married Henry VIII, it passed to him after her beheading, and then to his fourth wife Anne of Cleves as part of their divorce settlement. Henry divorced Anne for being too ugly - and she ended up with a gorgeous castle. In the early 1900s Hever was bought by American millionaire Astor who added 100 rooms through creating entire mock Tudor village, and an incredible Italian garden to house his statues. The castle itself is quite small but beautifully maintained, with Henry VIIIs original locks on the door and a fantastic audio guide. The grounds though are what make it wonderful. Amazing for kids the gardens are incredible with a lake with boating, an enormous playground, two mazes (one that squirts you with water on a wrong turn!), archery and an audio guide with games. Disability rating 7/10. The grounds are very accessible, but not the inside of the castle. #caudaequinasyndrome CES 🚩 - there are seven CES red flags where you should seek immediate medical advice. Hever Castle’s medieval bogies are an extremely rare sighting! First recorded in the 15th century these shy bogies have lived for centuries amongst the roof timbers in small colonies but are rarely seen during the day. They can have a nasty bite but if you treat them with respect and stop dusting the deep recesses of the medieval architecture they can thrive. The castle has seen lots of remodelling over its 600 year history, including the addition of a Tudor mansion house that was added inside the Bailey in the early 16th century that would become home to the young Anne Boleyn. There are no records of Anne encountering bogies but I have no doubt she would have played with them as a child. We love the summer jousting tournament events when they also often have falconry displays and loads of extra fun bits on for the kids during the holidays.
