This experience has enriched my understanding of the diverse factors influencing biodiversity restoration and landscape functionality. 🌿Today, we come together to celebrate the International Day of Plant Health 2024, a day with this year’s slogan-“Plant health, safe trade and digital technology”. Nowadays, international travel and trade have been associated with the introduction and spread of invasive pest species, which are one of the main drivers of biodiversity loss and threaten the delicate web of life that sustains our planet. 🚢According to @fao, over 240 million containers travel the world each year, carrying plant products that could harm our environment. Those invasive pest species are estimated to cause a whopping USD 220 billion in economic losses annually, a staggering number that highlights the urgent need for coordinated action to address this pressing issue. 🌍Fortunately, there is hope on the horizon. 𝕀𝕟𝕥𝕖𝕣𝕟𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟𝕒𝕝 𝔻𝕒𝕪 𝕠𝕗 ℙ𝕝𝕒𝕟𝕥 ℍ𝕖𝕒𝕝𝕥𝕙🌱 Today, we're sharing insights into one of our projects that is deploying never before used technology to monitor the South American Palm Weevil (SAPW) on coconut trees - a major pest which carries the nematode for the dreaded Red Ring Disease. Sensors will be installed on coconut trees in study sites along coastal communities in Trinidad and Tobago, St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines to monitor in real time, the presence of the larval stage of the SAPW. Monitoring will help inform timely mitigation and control strategies. Presently, the pest is only detected when infestation is advanced and symptoms such as browning of the leaves and premature nut fall are visible. Directly, early detection, supports plant health, reduces tree loss and protects some of the Region's most vulnerable coastal communities. Indirectly, farmers' livelihoods and resilience are promoted. This is one of the HIT Reset Caribbean projects funded by the ACP Innovation Fund, OACPS Research and Innovation Programme, a programme implemented by the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States with the financial contribution of the European Union. We depend on them for the air we breathe and the food we eat. They provide shelter, nourishment, improved air quality, cleaner water, and more – but like all living things, plants are threatened by climate change and habitat loss. EcoHealth Alliance scientists around the world are working to protect ecosystems and the plants that call them home, and recover what has already been lost. In Brazil, our scientists have shown that intact forests have direct positive health effects on human populations, preventing negative health impacts from wildfires. We are now investigating the ecological impacts of forest restoration – hoping to demonstrate that, as the forest recovers after deforestation, disease risk decreases, and the health of humans, animals, and the ecosystem are more secure. The United Nations designated 12 May the International Day of Plant Health (IDPH) to raise global awareness on how protecting plant health can help end hunger, reduce poverty, protect biodiversity and the environment, and boost economic development. Plants are life – we depend on them for 80 percent of the food we eat and 98 percent of the oxygen we breathe. But international travel and trade have been associated with the introduction and spread of plant pests. Invasive pest species are one of the main drivers of biodiversity loss and threaten the delicate web of life that sustains our planet. Pests and diseases have also been associated with rising temperatures which create new niches for pests to populate and spread. In response, the use of pesticides could increase, which harms pollinators, natural pest enemies and organisms crucial for a healthy environment. Protecting plant health is essential by promoting environmentally friendly practices such as integrated pest management. International standards for phytosanitary measures (ISPMs) in trade also help prevent the introduction and spread of plant pests across borders. Each year, over 240 million containers move between countries, carrying goods including plant products, posing biosecurity risks. In addition, about 80 percent of international trade consignments include wood packaging material, providing a pathway for pest transmission. As a result, damages from invasive pest species incur global economic losses of approximately USD 220 billion annually. Protecting plant health across borders is essential by promoting global collaboration and international standards, such as the International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPMs). Innovative solutions like electronic phytosanitary certification (ePhyto) streamline the process, making trade quicker and more secure.
