The hidden reality of #cysticfibrosis - 9 years later the PEG (percutaneous endoscopic gastronomy) in number 2 sons stomach still provides him with liquid feed overnight as he eats very little orally. It was CF annual review clinic yesterday....... All blood results were looking good, infection markers a little raised but this is to be expected as she's not been well at all, the illness she had a few weeks back has now caused her to experience something called "Alice in wonderland syndrome" which effects her sight and hearing, hopefully this will resolve itself soon. In the year she's had 7 lots of 2 week antibiotics, 2 weeks of IV antibiotics and grown 7 different bugs, although this doesn't sound great she is still doing well and the team are happy how she's doing. The plan going forward- Another 2 weeks of antibiotics to try to clear this chest, if shes no better after that, then she will be admitted for IVs, hopefully this will be avoided 🤞 Bloods have been taken to check her liver levels and a cough swab has been done to check for any bugs growing! All in all Elodie was once again amazing, we are so proud of her! The reason I am sharing this is to help others going through, or will be going through the transplant process. I am lucky to know a couple people who have had a heart transplant, and I have connected with many more here on Instagram. I have been able to ask them many questions about what I am experiencing, what they experienced and their input. Some may not have these connections. So I thought this may be helpful, and what to watch out for in a situation like this. Also I share this to show that there are many ups and downs in the journey. You don’t just get a transplant and go on your merry way. You are heavily connected to the hospital, especially for the first year. Note: I had no fever or chills with this infection. The update on the situation. They have started me on IV antibiotics. My surgeon came to see me and cut open the site a bit more. They want the infection to come out. They don’t want the skin closing on the surface and the infection brewing underneath. The infection has gone down to my muscle and below that is bone. If it gets to the bone I would need to be operated on. I feel confident it won’t get to that point 🤞🏻🙏🏻 He also packed it to prevent it from closing. They want it to heal from the bottom to the top. It looks like I will be here the whole weekend, and possibly Monday. My iv pole is looking a little crazy. Got a little bit of everything going. Got my TPN, Potassium, Magnesium, Keppra, last dose of Antibiotics, and then my regular LR fluids. I might not be in a actual hospital but this LTACH treats you as if you are. Right on their toes. Walking into your room exactly when meds are due. Staying on top of your labs and if anything is low they make sure they are getting it up. If vitals are low they hit you with the fluids and shifting the body. Sugar is low they hit you with the dextrose. I never thought a step down place could possibly be better than the actual hospital but I'm starting to feel like this place is lol. 4 weeks post transplant, & what should have been my 4th biopsy😏 My biopsy was cancelled today due to the pain and exhaustion I have been having the last couple days. Along with the water seen around my heart that has increased, and my incision infection. The two may be related. They feel safer that I postpone it for a week. Though I hate biopsy day, I was disappointed. Another set back. Today I had lots of blood work, an echocardiogram, and an ECG. My transplant team has admitted me to hospital to begin IV antibiotics, swab my incision, take an X-ray, and have a CT scan to take a closer look at things🤞🏻 My heart transplant has been one of the most challenging things I have faced in my life. The intense pain, difficulty sleeping, manoeuvring my body, dressing, showering, climbing stairs, and the dreaded biopsies 😫 just to name a few. Some days are better than others. The last couple days I have been in a lot of pain and haven’t had much energy. I required a lot of help yesterday doing simple tasks, but I am pushing through the best I can. Walking everyday and getting lots of rest. While I was in the hospital for my transplant, I said several times “this is not for the weak” 🤣🙃 So I guess I believe I am pretty strong 😅 💪🏼❤️ 😉. Line caps and flushes and port caps and tubing and gloves and heparin and alcohol swabs - so many supplies beyond just the medication. For the last six weeks, three times a day, at 730am, 230pm and 930pm @mackenzieadermn would set this up and then sit with me during the arduous three hours while medication ran through my veins. In the beginning I had to lay in the silence. Towards the end I could tolerate talking during the infusions but would be left completely exhausted afterwards. This regiment was grueling, but we also knew it was necessary. I had an infection in my brain - there was no way around treating it however necessary, even when it was overwhelming, demanding and difficult. Yesterday was the first day since November 30th without this routine, and it feels like relief but also like fear. The infectious disease doctor said that recurring meningitis is possible. She also said that once I finished antibiotics, it’s possible additional symptoms may indicate they missed something during the original diagnostic process seven weeks ago. My body is exhausted. My head has been various levels of throbbing for the last two months. I’m dizzy when I sit up for too long. I get confused easily and I forget things that I should easily remember. The cognitive deficits are insanely frustrating and I can’t do anything to fix them any faster. This version of me is hard to sit with. There are so many things that are physically and mentally intolerable. ১। ডায়রিয়া বা পেট খারাপ হলেই অনেকে মেট্রোনিডাজল কিংবা অ্যাজিথ্রোমাইসিনজাতীয় ওষুধ (অ্যান্টিবায়োটিক) সেবন করে ফেলেন। অথচ বেশির ভাগ ডায়রিয়া এমনিতেই সেরে যায়। বরং ডায়রিয়া রোগীর পানি ও লবণের ঘাটতি পূরণে বারবার ওরস্যালাইন দিতে হবে। এ ক্ষেত্রে অ্যান্টিবায়োটিক নয়, বরং ওরস্যালাইনই জীবনরক্ষাকারী চিকিৎসাব্যবস্থা। ২। সর্দি-কাশি, জ্বর কিংবা গলাব্যথার মতো সাধারণ মৌসুমি রোগবালাইয়ে অ্যান্টিবায়োটিক নয়, গ্রহণ করুন উপসর্গ উপশমকারী ব্যবস্থা। ৩। চিকিৎসক ছাড়া অন্য কারও পরামর্শে অ্যান্টিবায়োটিক সেবন করবেন না। দোকানদারের পরামর্শে, অন্য কেউ এটা খেয়ে উপকার পেয়েছেন বলে বা আগে চিকিৎসক কখনো এ–জাতীয় উপসর্গে দিয়েছিলেন বলে অ্যান্টিবায়োটিক খাবেন না। ৪। অ্যান্টিবায়োটিক সেবন শুরু করলে পূর্ণ মেয়াদ শেষ করতে হবে। মাঝপথে বন্ধ করা যাবে না। উপসর্গ উপশম হয়ে এলেও যত দিন নির্দিষ্ট করা হয়েছে, তত দিন পর্যন্ত অ্যান্টিবায়োটিক চালিয়ে যেতে হবে। আবার একটি অ্যান্টিবায়োটিক চলা অবস্থায় উপশম হতে সময় লাগছে বলে চট করে অন্য অ্যান্টিবায়োটিক শুরু করাও অনুচিত। ৫। একই ধরনের উপসর্গ দেখা দিতে পারে নানান রোগের কারণেই। কাজেই একজনের চিকিৎসায় ব্যবহৃত অ্যান্টিবায়োটিক অন্য কেউ সেবন করাও ঠিক নয়। ৬। প্যাকেট খোলার পর অ্যান্টিবায়োটিক সেবনে খুব বেশি দিন দেরি করা যাবে না। শিশুদের ক্ষেত্রে একবার অ্যান্টিবায়োটিকের বোতল খোলা হলে পরবর্তী সময়ে অসুস্থ হলে ব্যবহারের জন্য রেখে দেওয়া একদমই অনুচিত। ৭। সংক্রমণ প্রতিরোধের জন্য সব সময় সচেতন থাকুন। নিয়মমাফিক হাত ধোয়া, হাঁচি-কাশির আদবকেতা বজায় রাখা, কফ-থুতু এবং ব্যবহৃত টিস্যু ও রুমাল নির্দিষ্ট স্থানে ফেলা, খাবার ঢেকে রাখার মতো সুঅভ্যাস বজায় রাখুন সব সময়। অ্যান্টিবায়োটিক সেবন করার চেয়ে সংক্রমণ যাতে না হয়, সেদিকে নজর দিন বেশি। #antibiotics #noantibiotics #ivantibiotics #naturalantibiotics #antibioticsfree #antibioticstewardship #antibioticssuck #keepantibioticsworking #noantibioticsever #antibioticsresistance #raisedwithoutantibiotics #nomoreantibiotics #antibioticsfordays

Saturday 9th December - Day 10 in Hospital 🏩 Would you believe after the 5 attempts it took yesterday for vascular access to cannulate me, my vein had blown by this morning. They were called again to replace my cannula or else I wouldn’t be able to have my IV antibiotics, this time in my right arm, fingers crossed it doesn’t pop out without someone realising. Still waiting for the swab from my suprapubic wound to come back, if it isn’t back by Monday they need to do another one which will take another 3-5 days to come back. 100% reckon I have an infection, it’s so sore, inflamed, red and very gunky, even the nurses agree. Spoke to a nurse today about the whole covid situation, I’m going to get retested on day 5 which will be Tuesday, so we will go from there. Friday 8th December - Day Nine In Hospital 🏩 I wasn’t actually going to do a post today, I have so many emotions at the moment it’s unreal. Didn’t get much sleep last night as I was coughing so much, woke up this morning and I had practically lost my voice. Doctor ordered a chest X-ray, covid and flu swab, blood test, urine test & listened to my chest. Vascular access paid me a visit as I needed IV antibiotics as I have got a urine infection. Even with the ultrasound machine it still took him 5 attempts to cannulate me “your such a challenge” he said. Later on in the afternoon, the doctor told me I have tested positive for covid, more IV antibiotics, being monitored closely incase I need oxygen and I have been moved into a side room. My heart rate and blood pressure is all over the place this afternoon and evening 181/151 “my god, I haven’t seen a blood pressure that high in ages” that’s what the nurse had told me. Two weeks ago the trajectory of my treatment went in a new direction. I began an intensive regimen of IV antibiotics. Three times a day (every 8 hours) I receive infusions. I will continue this treatment for an indeterminate amount of time. I have posted a photo in my story from the day I received my first infusion. I wrote this poem shortly thereafter. Even though I know this treatment comes with risks and side effects, I have renewed hope. Now two weeks into treatment I am experiencing extreme fatigue, almost daily migraines, and many other unfavorable effects. However, my tremors have significantly decreased, I’ve not had any seizures, my digestion and sleep have improved, and I feel like this is working. I’m still here. After that burst of bored hospital posting, I feel like I’ve gone quiet this week! Most of it is exhaustion—bone-deep weariness that has me sleeping more hours than not, as my body works on healing from this unexpectedly complicated family of lung infections. IV antibiotics, at home or in the hospital, are tough on the system, and trying to fit in extra hours of breathing treatments amid all the sleep while also tending to urgent responsibilities that have been neglected for the past few weeks… whew. . Still, we’ve filled these quiet holidays with tons of board games, lazy mornings of TV, laughing and some crying. (And pie, of course, though our pie count was a woeful 5 for 5 people, sorry.) . Transplant is NOT a cure | The past month has taken me from highest of highs to the lowest I have felt in a while. Going to NYC with @boomeresiasonfoundation (seeing my favorite people💜 and hugging Kaz 🥹) and Meeting Taylor were such core memories that I’ll never forget. I’m still on a high from it all. — It is funny how quickly the highest of highs can turn. After meeting Taylor, I woke up so sick. I had been feeling off leading up to this event but I couldn’t miss it. It was truly the most special day. I drove to Palm Springs with Kels to get Rachel’s Bach party started. I knew in my head that I was getting sicker and sicker and needed to put my health first. Unfortunately, I was right. I went to the ER (great hospital in PS) at my first out of network hospital. What I thought was the issue, turned out to be it — Pseudomonas Pneumonia. This is a bacteria I grew before transplant the ultimately lead to me needing a transplant. It’s very stupid and I hate it. I was satting well so the doctor gave me a dose of IV antibiotics and to go home in the AM to start IV meds at Kaiser. I had to leave the Bach and go home. — This was actually the smoothest IV antibiotic experience I have ever had. I got off the plane, went right to the infusion clinic to access my port and give me my first dose. Home iv pharmacy delivered the goods and I was set. I was ridiculously sick though. Labored breathing, chest pain, productive cough, chills/sweats, headache, no appetite, exhaustion. Hard to go up and down the stairs. I honestly don’t know how I did this every 3-4 weeks pre transplant! I felt like such a wuss haha Thankfully 2 weeks of antibiotics helped. I’m still getting back to myself but I’ll get there soon. — My friends got me out of the house for a few hours at a time to get sunshine and hang out. Sometimes that involves doing IV out and about with a lot of sanitizing 🩷 This life has its ups and downs, but after 7 years IV antibiotic free, I’m feeling so blessed. Cellulitis is an infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissues. It usually presents as redness, swelling and pain of the affected area. Some may have fever and chills. Well November started well… the pyelonephritis I’ve had the last three week turned into sepsis on Friday my sixth episode this year between pneumonia’s and Pyelonephritis. This one took hold fast and I got very poorly very quickly. One minute I was on the phone to the GP next it’s blue lights and into Resus and I won’t lie I’ve not felt this poorly or scared in a while. Started in Gentamicin and Co-Amoxiclave as the previous culture showed these should work, they didn’t and I continued to go down hill. So now on Tebipenem, Ertapenem till new cultures come back. On top of this I have also developed Shingles! Like cheers universe I needed that as well. But with any PID, and in my case CVID shingles can become dangerous and cause a lot of nasty complications so they decided to add in some high dose IV Aciclovir an anti viral to lessen the impact. Kidneys are not working great so unfortunately they’ve placed an indwelling catheter as I was struggling to ISC and in full retention. So we’re trying to balance rehydration with litres of fluid but my heart and lungs are not happy with this and I’m starting to resemble the Michelin man. I’m feeling pretty low, I don’t know how much I have left in me to keep fighting these types of infections. After 40 years me and my body are getting so unbelievably tired of this constant game. It’s getting scary how hard they are getting to treat. Hoping this one isn’t ESBL + and resistant, waiting for the London ID team to advise on the plan going forward. It’s been a traumatic admission in terms of my PTSD and the catheter was particularly stressful, painful and triggering. But on the plus side I have a new consultant who has been very kind and has knowledge of medically complex cases like me. We missed family plans and the fireworks which was sad. I hate being here more then ever but we keep pushing one day at a time. It’s easy to read the stories and think well she’s old hand she’s used to it I’m sure, but to the people who stopped to send a msg thank you. I had my laparoscopic total proctocolectomy Oct 24th and man this has been an extremely rough surgery. From pain relief to attempting getting out of bed it has all been such a challenge. My mom has basically been doing everything for me, shout out to my momma bear. I don’t know where I would be or what I would’ve done without her help. I am able to get up, but not for long and I cannot sit without my donut pillow for comfort and support. I’m on a fentynal patch and oral dilaudid through my tube. The pressure from my back end is insane and hurts so bad. I’m just glad I’m home and don’t have multiple residents roughly checking on my bum wound. I was screaming every single time someone tried checking it, I was screaming every time we needed to change my dressings. It was just an awful, very long surgery (8 1/2hrs long). Me & my girl 🏰🧚🎆✨ . I know that I’ll always remember Disney now as the time Celia (& the boys) got sick, and we dosed up and didn’t let it ruin our holiday but then we got home, the boys were better and she got worse. I know there is nothing I could have done differently to stop this nasty infection taking over her body, so many have repeated how I’ve saved her from ICU by breastfeeding her which feels incredible; but I can’t help but think what if I could/should have done something differently. . Celia is so precious to me, as all our children are, but being a baby so small and helpless, she’s been relying on me entirely to be her regulator, her voice, her advocate, her support and comfort. The amount of times I’ve had to tell them; I think she’s feeling sick, she cries when she wees, her tummy is hurting, she’s really cold and clammy, she’s burning up or she’s gone downhill again, she’s feeling worse- because I know when even a slight thing is different in her. . Being told your 10 month old is likely to be fighting a blood infection and we need to check her organ functions and act quickly, is the scariest thing I’ve ever heard. Heartbreaking. And even though she’s hopefully now over the worse days, I’m still heartbroken. Im so confused and angry and sad to why this happened. . One day this will be a long distant memory, but I know it will effect her, it will effect me, this is now part of our future because as neurodivergent people we don’t easily just shake off and move on; I’m going to make sure we give so much time to processing and healing and making sure her body is able to get and stay as healthy as possible, as this is not something that ever should have been, or should be, overlooked. . Our health is everything, mental and physical health is always the most important thing to me and that’s why we are where we are, and do what we do. Being a mother our children’s health is paramount; we should be listened to, believed and trusted. Especially as ND mothers, we just know stuff.
