Line caps and flushes and port caps and tubing and gloves and heparin and alcohol swabs - so many supplies beyond just the medication. For the last six weeks, three times a day, at 730am, 230pm and 930pm @mackenzieadermn would set this up and then sit with me during the arduous three hours while medication ran through my veins. In the beginning I had to lay in the silence. Towards the end I could tolerate talking during the infusions but would be left completely exhausted afterwards. This regiment was grueling, but we also knew it was necessary. I had an infection in my brain - there was no way around treating it however necessary, even when it was overwhelming, demanding and difficult. Yesterday was the first day since November 30th without this routine, and it feels like relief but also like fear. The infectious disease doctor said that recurring meningitis is possible. She also said that once I finished antibiotics, it’s possible additional symptoms may indicate they missed something during the original diagnostic process seven weeks ago. My body is exhausted. My head has been various levels of throbbing for the last two months. I’m dizzy when I sit up for too long. I get confused easily and I forget things that I should easily remember. The cognitive deficits are insanely frustrating and I can’t do anything to fix them any faster. This version of me is hard to sit with. There are so many things that are physically and mentally intolerable. Many of the bacteria that cause infections in hospitals live in the intestines being harmless. However, these bacteria can cause life-threatening infections if they enter the bloodstream. Survived my first day on all 4 of my iv antibiotics (Doxy, Ceftriaxone, Daptomycin, Clindamycin). Feeling wiped out but hopeful this monster of a protocol is going to help. I still can’t believe I’m lucky enough to have won my appeal for insurance coverage. It’s pretty crazy infusing daptomycin knowing it costs up to $500 a day. I am so #blessed and when I am feeling better want to do everything in my power to advocate for treatment coverage in other states, as without the Mass law and Mass health insurance, I would still be denied like thousands of other patients out there. It is so not fair. So grateful for my llmd who is so responsive and helpful through this miserable process. The iv doxy is making me super dizzy during the 2 hour infusions (twice a day), so we’ve determined I need to get eclipse balls that are set to run over 3 hours an infusion instead. That means I’ll be hooked up to doxy for 6 hours a day alone, but it will be worth it to not feel so sick while it runs. Adjusting to this new normal of a full day of infusions. Today’s my first day of IV doxy and I’m finally on all 4 iv antibiotics included in my new protocol. I have to admit I debated whether to start the doxy today as the first few doses of daptomycin have been kicking my ass. I look and feel absolutely miserable and for someone who has been flared and feeling lousy for 2 months, it’s saying a lot that I even notice the difference. I decided to compromise and do one of the two doxycycline infusions today so I would start the medicine but not go overboard. I’m so grateful for these eclipse pumps so I can stay mobile while infusing as doxy is a 2 hour infusion twice a day. The only problem is the medicine is only good for 3 days after mixed in these pumps so I have to stay on top of my inventory and order shipments multiple times a week. I’m expecting the first few weeks of this protocol to be pretty bumpy but grateful for the opportunity to even be on these medicines. I’m trying to stay strong but I have to admit these herxes are scary, I’m terribly afraid of making things worse instead of better, and I’m exhausted from this marathon of a battle. I’ve been treating this disease for 2 years now (short-term antibiotics first , then all holistic treatments, went on to Complex Antibiotic/ Antimalarial protocol for 10 months, 5/10 months with picc line). Praying I get through this and start seeing some minimal improvements. Linezolid is active against most Gram-positive bacteria that cause disease, including streptococci, vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The main uses are infections of the skin and pneumonia although it may be used for a variety of other infections including drug-resistant tuberculosis. It is used either by injection into a vein or by mouth. Linezolid is a weak, non-selective, reversible monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), and should not be used concomitantly with other MAOIs, large amounts of tyramine-rich foods (such as pork, aged cheeses, alcoholic beverages, or smoked and pickled foods), or serotonergic drugs. There have been reports of serotonin syndrome when linezolid was given with the discontinuation of serotonergic drugs, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors such as paroxetine and sertraline. It may also enhance the blood pressure-increasing effects of sympathomimetic drugs such as pseudoephedrine or phenylpropanolamine. It should also not be given in combination with pethidine (meperidine) under any circumstance due to the risk of serotonin syndrome. Part 2 of Study: Persister cells are a form of Lyme Cells that hide in a slimy substance called biofilm when threatened by changes in the body, i.e- antibiotics, herbals, immune system. Sometimes Lyme spirochetes can go back and forth between the biofilm and cystic forms of the cells. The study explains this phenomenon in more depth. It is important to note that human trials will still need to be done on the three drug combinations to be shown as an effective treatment for humans. So far, the mice model is one step closer to human trials. I have been countlessly searching for tick borne studies online each week in the last six months. As someone living with a chronic illness, particularly one like Lyme disease that is not universally recognized or treated as a chronic illness it is imperative to stay on top of new findings in the field. We cannot solely rely on a small set of doctors or naturopaths to always push us forward. Doctors may be in charge of diagnosing, prescribing, and prognosis’s but patients and science may have to fill in the gaps from time to time. As observed from this diagram of a study we are conducting, our preliminary results suggest that by increasing a patient’s temperature by around 7% and reducing the antibiotic concentration, we increase the effect against different Borrelia burgdorferi strains by more than twice as much compared to using 100% of the antibiotic dose at a normal temperature. Consequently, these initial results exhibit the impairing effect of the Daptomycin antibiotic combo increased by whole body hyperthermia in our first group of human candidates. Please note that these results are only for informational purposes, and not to be used nor mishandled. Our current study is still in progress to determine the best possible combinations with whole body hyperthermia that prove to eradicate certain Borrelia strains in their active and stationary forms as well as biofilm. This week I had to drop the daptomycin. I’d been on it like 2 weeks and already my body is freaking out. And I got informed my white blood cells are dropping again and are too low. I’m preparing myself for having to stop everything again. I spent a month off meds to deal with this nonsense. I’m on a bajillion supplements for immune function, am on a strict diet, and as soon as I start a protocol my bone marrow self destructs. It’s so frustrating. I’m not sure what I’ll do if I just can’t tolerate antibiotics anymore. I’ve tried herbal treatments both alone and with my antibiotics pretty much this whole time. But herbs alone never give me much of anything, good or herx wise. Today was an exciting day for me. I got the “okay” from my Infectious Disease doctor to stop antibiotics on MONDAY. YYYAAAAAY 🎉🎉. I’ve known that today was the day. I had known monday was the day. But, with the problems I had with Vancomycin and the strange reactions I was having to Daptomycin (hair loss, rash, the works) I was totally prepared to have to go for a couple more weeks which would push my shunt surgery back farther. BUT, that was not the case. So, Monday will be an even more exciting day. I also see Dr. Jones and my Josie next week and will HOPEFULLY have a date for shunt placement! More excitement! I also got the “okay” to keep my PICC line until after surgery (which is also not something I thought I’d get to keep) because of how bad my veins have gotten and don’t want to be stuck 5-7 times for IVs. So yay! And just like that I finish my last dose of IV #daptomycin. 43 doses of 850 mg. 1,290 minutes over the last 43 days spent pushing my meds. My nurse will be coming this afternoon to pull my line! This represents the next big milestone in my journey forward. This comes with much excitement and anticipation of being able to shower normally and use my right arm without having to be cautious of lifting too much or doing repetitive movements. But it also comes with some anxiety and apprehension. Others with #chronicillness understand that stopping treatment can also be scary. Bringing about fears of symptoms and functional limitations returning. But for now, I hold onto the hope that the plan of care I just completed was the most thorough one yet. That I have finally found a team of physicians that will hopefully see this through to the end and won't throw their hands up in the air and say "I don't know, just deal with it."
