Today I finished my last painting (I have spent over a year thus far on this project) for my upcoming solo show opening March 16, 2023 at San Clemente's Casa Romantica Cultural Center, "Inspired by History." I will be pairing 22 of my works with 22 historical masterworks of California Impressionists, on loan for the exhibition from the extensive Boseker Family Art Collection. Last evening I attended a very informative & interesting lecture about the artists through the different art movements and how they have captured California’s beauty. Renown art historian Jean Stern took us from the Barbizon school through current day Expressionism. I learned so much. It felt so good to be experiencing art in person once more. In conjunction with the current exhibition "GIFTED: Collecting the Art of California at Gardena High School, 1919-1956," the Hilbert Museum is pleased to present Jean Stern, Senior Curator of California Impressionism at the UC Irvine Institute and Musuem for California Art and Director Emeritus of The Irvine Museum, speaking on "Highlights of the Gardena High School Collection." The talk will take place at the museum on Tuesday, July 9 at 6 pm and is free and open to the public; no ticket required. Doors will open at 5:30 pm. The illustrated talk will allow you to gain further insight into the amazing story of and the pieces included in the Gardena High School collection. The museum will remain open for half an hour following the talk so you may explore the exhibition. Gardena High School, in L.A.'s South Bay area, owns what is widely acknowledged to be one of the most spectacular assemblages of California art in the state. It’s a stunning display of more than 70 paintings as well as archival materials – the largest exhibition of the collection yet publicly mounted. This is the first time the collection in its near-entirety has been on display in more than 60 years. And it's being exhibited in the year that marks the 100th Anniversary of the collection. "Begun in 1919 as a lesson in art appreciation for the school's graduating senior class, the collection grew, semester by semester," says Stern in his foreword to the exhibition catalogue. "The legacy left by the students was more than an exceptional permanent collection; it also developed into an art association and a cherished community tradition." The exhibition, curated by Susan M. Anderson, is on view at the Hilbert Museum now through October 19. It includes works by prominent painters of California Impressionism, including William Wendt, Edgar Payne, Hanson Duvall Puthuff, Jean Mannheim, Franz Bischoff, Maurice Braun, Alson Clark, and Marion Wachtel, among others. Please join us this Thursday, August 9 at 7 pm for a free lecture at the Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University! We are delighted to welcome as guest speaker Mr. Jean Stern, noted author, art historian and Executive Director of the Irvine Museum Collection at UC Irvine Institute and Museum for California Art, who will present a free lecture on "The Historical Development of California Scene Painting." Doors will open at 6:30pm, and seating is first-come, first-served. There will be limited standing room if all seating is taken up. There is limited parking (including handicapped parking spaces) in front of the Museum, and more free parking available on the top floor of the Chapman University structure at 230 N. Cypress, about one block north of the Museum. The lecture will cover the historical development of genre -- which basically means "everyday life" -- as a subject of art. While genre was prevalent in the art of ancient times, and can be seen in Egyptian tomb paintings, Roman mosaics, etc., it was superceded by religious iconography for about a thousand years, from the Dark Ages through the Renaissance. It reappeared again in Northern Europe in the 1600s with the painters of the Dutch Golden Age, and spread throughout Europe and to the United States, particularly in the past 200 years. The lecture spotlights the California Scene painting movement of the 20th century and how it fits into this history, and how the Hilbert Museum is taking a leading role in defining and bringing this style to the wider attention of the public and the art world. Jean Stern is the author of "Windows in Time: California Scene Paintings from the Hilbert Collection," as well as many other books. As executive director of the Irvine Museum (now the Irvine Museum Collection at UC Irvine Institute and Museum for California Art) for more than 25 years, Mr. Stern is a recognized authority on California Impressionism.
