This beautiful oak tree has caused me a lot of angst! The initial plein air watercolour was beautiful and I was really pleased with it, but when I took it back into the studio it just didnt translate. I normally paint my large scale paintings instinctively in one session, this painting however took much longer to unfold over a period of weeks. I took photos as I went sometimes then thinking about the painting for a couple of weeks and working on something else before I came back to it. So let me know what you think….should I have stopped at an earlier iteration….or was I right to keep going?? The beauty of recording is that you can learn from the decisions you made to inform the next paintings. All part of the practice! Anyway I now love it! I think it captures the spirit of the original tree, the prominent roots seeming to sprout directly from the earth, the moss growing up from the roots…..the strong branches twisting and gnarling, showing its age and wisdom. Another beautiful oak tree watching over us helping to heal us and our planet if we let it. This tree will be on display and for sale as part of my open studios for @seopenstudios with @faye_bridgwater.
