We arrived in Johannesburg late one night, I have no idea which day but we had a few hours drive before we got to the first lodge. We spent a night at Shepherds Tree Lodge and a night at Ivory Tree Lodge. It should have been three nights at Ivory Tree but that plan was out the window thanks to the Disaster in Dubai! A five o'clock alarm call was not the nicest feeling after what had happened over the last couple of days but it was worth it once we got going on our game drive. Thankfully we got to go on a few more drives out before our time in the park was finished. Once you get the hang of it, it is so much fun on game drive to debate, discuss and determine the species you encounter, especially when it concerns birds. After all, it’s quite hard to mistake a lion for an elephant, but with birds it can get tricky. And especially with some birds of prey. Heated debates sometimes take place in our game viewers whether the spotted bird is a juvenile something, a female other or just a rarely seen guest. In this instance these co-owners were slowly making their way back to the lodge after their morning coffee when they spotted a large bird high up in the tree. What was it? A black-chested eagle? A juvenile African hawk eagle? Or… could it be a martial eagle? Lucky, the guide, said that he had only spotted a martial eagle once or twice in all his years in the Reserve, so could this be real? After close examination – luckily the eagle was staying put – they decided that it definitely was a martial eagle, the largest eagle in Africa. With their wingspan of over 2 metres and their weight of more than 6 kilos these eagles are magnificent ‘monsters’, apex predators in the air. They are not picky where it comes to food, and they hunt for anything from monitor lizards to small antelopes and rock hyraxes (dassies). Last day of our time in St. Augustine area and I spent time at the Guana Tolomato Estuarine Research Reserve. A lot of species around this wildlife reserve. Here’s a few I captured in my time there. . 1) Gopher Tortoise - never saw so many in one area (at least 50 nesting sites between the dam & trail head), 2) Brown Pelican on the hunt for food during low tide, 3) Juvenile Reddish Egret on the hunt in a waterhole, 4) Solitary female Hooded Merganser (seems she isn’t part of the large flock I saw at the park entrance, not sure if the damaged beak was the reason), 5) American Alligator catching some sun to warm up, 6/7) Great Egret posing, as they often do. The second image was on a trail with mosaic display highlighting the local waterfowl (timing is everything). . Next onto South Carolina to finish our 3 week southern vacation. It was a bit funny to see that the walls in the Limpopo-Lipadi office were brimming to the ceiling with packages the other day. What had happened here? A truckload of 2,200 packs of sanitary pads had been delivered, as part of a Motse community project working with the Bobirwa District Council to hand out these packages to the schoolgirls in the villages. Sanitary pads are for some girls a luxury they cannot afford, and this causes a lot of missed school days and shame. As this is a ‘problem’ that can be easily fixed, the Motse committee decided to participate in the District Council's campaign to buy sanitary pads for the schoolgirls. Earlier this week these packages were handed out by the Motse Committee with an impressive ceremony of speeches from the Council chairman, a representative of the Ministry of Education, deputy head of the secondary school and many other officials. This is another great example of how Motse works together with the local communities to help meet needs and how we can step in to help make life better and easier for the children in the villages. The Motse Committee funds and oversees community outreach programmes requested by local community representatives. Motse means ‘community’ in Setswana and is a combination of the first letters of Moletemane and Tsetsebjwe, the names of the 2 villages closest to Limpopo-Lipadi. Most reserve staff come from these villages, and representatives of both villages sit on the Motse Committee, along with Limpopo-Lipadi co-owners.
