Absolutely extraordinary and the show to see in LA. Made on Market Street, curated by Fred Hoffman with Larry Gagosian, is the first exhibition to focus exclusively on the works that Jean-Michel Basquiat created in Los Angeles. Between the fall of 1982 and spring of 1984, he produced approximately a hundred paintings, silkscreen editions, and numerous works on paper in Venice, California. For an artist closely affiliated with the New York art scene of the 1980s, Basquiat was extraordinarily prolific in Los Angeles. In November 1982 Basquiat lived and worked at Gagosian’s residence on Market Street. For months the artist made new paintings in Venice, many of which were included in Gagosian’s second Basquiat exhibition, which opened on March 8, 1983. During this period, Basquiat met Fred Hoffman, whose New City Editions produced prints and multiples. A neo-expressionistic interpretation of a Black man who has been brutalized by a group of policemen. Police brutality, a constant everyday threat with no end in sight, the face of this Black man beaten to a swollen distorted pulp and my acute imagination veers back to Emmett Tillman. Patti Astor (1950-2024) the American actress, Queen of the Downtown scene who was an icon of underground films like WiLD STYLE, and Underground USA has sadly passed away. I only recently realized that the character on the left , the "native" is carrying one of the Cross Bar 1"x3" wooden frames . "Future Science Versus The Man" (left) and "Future " (right) were part of a very important series of similar frames made leading up to The Fun Gallery show which opened November 4. This was exactly one month after I delivered to Andy Warhol's Factory the still wet "Dos Cabezas ".This series is often misunderstood and misidentified with the narratives ranging from "LNPRK " which belongs to The Whitney , which, according to the blurb on the Whitney website is a totally erroneous deciphering of its' allusions, references, and significations . Next we have Dos Cabezas " which is constantly ( see Netfix Andy Warhol Diaries and present sales pitch online for the selling of "Dos Csbezas" misrepresented as a gift thanking Andy Warhol for lunch rather than a one for one portrait exchange which had been negotiated by Bruno Bischofberger three weeks prior in Appenzell , Switzerland. I purchased these (pencil on paper) from Helga de Alvear in 2002. Thomas March whom I had worked with several years before, called on me to show with him at Arco that year. I was walking around in the first day with Francesca Thyssen who had come to see me and I caught these works. They aren’t straight up paintings and they come very close to being sculptures. And, to make things more interesting, apart from the sharp statements each one bares, the dates on each encompass a timeline that is before, during and after 9/11, 2001. This artist @ester_partegas was living and working in Brooklyn at that time. It is a valuable body of work that begs for an even closer scrutiny, given…. The piece dated 9/01/2001 says, “there is no way I am not going to do that.” Invest interest and read the items on the paper work following one of the most dramatic events of modern times, to which the Catalan artist born in 1972 had a very close call, if she did not lose friends or loved ones in that month , I don’t know, I haven’t talked to her.@pratsnoguerasblanchard I propose an exhibition observing 25 years since 9/11., one that displays works by artists actively working during those days leading up to and after.
