Looking down from Lendal Bridge onto Dame Judi Dench Walk and the river Ouse, York The plaque on Lendal Tower to the right reads: Lendal Tower. Dating from about 1300, it was originally part of the City's defences, with a defensive chain stretching from here to the Tower on the opposite bank. In 1677 it was leased to the predecessors of The York Waterworks Plc for five hundred years, at an annual rent of one peppercorn, for use as a water tower. During the 18th century it housed a steam pumping engine modified to the design of John Smeaton FRS, then a proprietor of the Waterworks. It ceased to be used for those purposes in 1850. Olde York. Photos of York usually show the giant Minster but I like that this one cuts it off. See the steeple in the upper right? That’s St Wilfrid’s where we got married in 2000. And that stone building is Lendal Tower which was leased to York waterworks at an annual rent of one peppercorn. I worked for a short time for York Waterworks in the late 90s in an adjacent building when there were still peacocks wandering around the gardens. Lendal Tower, York 🏰 This 14th century Ancient Scheduled Monument once guarded York’s city walls. Lendal Tower was used to collect tolls by way of a great iron chain that stretched all the way to North St Postern Tower. From the 17th century, this medieval tower got the nickname The Waterhouse as it began to operate a piped water supply for the city. Barker and Lendal Towers, York. The two 14th century towers were built at the ends of the Bar Walls where they met the River Ouse. A chain was hung between the towers to secure the river against waterborne intruders. Barker Tower was also known as North Street Postern tower, covering a narrow Postern gate giving access to the River bank beyond the wall. Drawings of the early 19th century show a small cottage attached to it, the whole being let to the operators of the ferry here. One of these was called Barker. Barker and Lendal Towers, York. It's been a while since I did an sketching outdoors in York bit managed a half hour or so recently doodling the @theperkypeacockyork after doing a few jobs. While sketching the tower a group of people asked where York Minster was as they had no idea what it looked like. Lendal Tower and Barker Tower, York...... Lendal Tower is a medieval structure that formed part of the city defences of York. The building was used as a waterworks from 1616 until 1846 after which it was converted into offices. It has since been turned into rental accommodation. Lendal Tower was built c.1300 and was originally circular and similar in appearance to Barker Tower but was remodelled giving it additional strength and height. Along with Barker Tower, on the opposite bank, it was built to control access to the city by way of an iron chain which was stretched across the river to impose the payment of tolls and from medieval times until the construction of Lendal Bridge in 1863 a ferry service crossed the river between the two towers. Lendal Tower is first recorded in the Custody of 1315 as 'Turrim Sancti Leonardi' (Tower of St Leonards). Barker Tower, also dating from the 14th century, its name was derived from the ‘barkers’ who would extract tannin from oak bark in order to turn leather brown. Tanner Row is a nearby street, suggesting this area was the location of tanner and leather industries in the Middle Ages. One of the earliest records of Barker Tower dates back to 1380 when Thomas Smyth was named as 'Keeper of the Chain'. However, the tower was leased out to ferrymen even earlier. In 1344, a woman named Agnes ran a ferry service from the tower to get patients and staff to St. Leonards Hospital. The ferry service was made redundant in 1863 when Lendal Bridge was built. The tower briefly found a new purpose in the Victorian period as a mortuary, and later housed an art gallery.
