Thrilled to announce my new job doing native plant restoration up Mauna Kea! What a rush it is to mālama ‘āina at >9000 ft asl (especially considering I live at only 400 ft asl and I do this drive in less than an hour). If the lack of oxygen doesn't kill me, the beautiful views may just strike me down. ○ Here are a few shots from recent field days. 1. A fenced ‘āhinahina, Mauna Loa in the background. 2. Keiki ‘āhinahina! 3. Keiki māmane, glistening with dew. 4. Pua oh a hybrid Argyroxiphium. ○ In all seriousness, this is a humbling position to be gifted. Mauna Kea remains threatened by continued colonial efforts aimed at building the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT). As most of you reading this well know, this development project is strongly opposed by *many* Kānaka ‘Ōiwi and other members of our community. I'm not planting mea kanu to offset impacts: I'm planting mea kanu for our future, for the resiliency of this sacred Mauna. We need to be maka‘ala as discussions are once again ramping up regarding TMT. Sneak peek of *something* that will maybe come to fruition in future months 🤞🏽. Spent an incredible day on Maunakea. Was going to be up there as a chaperone for a school trip (20 seniors and 1 junior from Colorado spent a week in Hawaii learning about our culture and astronomy) and ended up coordinating to get pictures taken for a potential magazine article for LEI AND THE FIRE GODDESS. When the other teacher and I approached one of the rangers that checks to make sure folks have 4wd vehicles the uncle looks at me and goes, "you Maunakea?" Me (shocked): "yeah?" Uncle: "been waiting for you." Apparently my name was on a list with the other 4 chaperones and stood out a bit ❤️ You like my sneakers? 🤪 Embarrassing w my @kauluaehawaii romper but gotta do what I gotta do. I had leggings on underneath too cause I'm a wuss in the cold 🥶 The whole day was completely magical. I haven't been on the mauna since I was a little kid. Poliʻahu put on a glorious show complete with snow showers, fast moving mist, and sun breaking through clouds, and the guys I was with were excellent company. This past weekend, we submitted a public comment against the TMT construction on Mauna Kea. “For centuries, research, science, and education, have exploited the ancestral lands and sacred places of Indigenous Peoples and Original Nations without consequence, causing irreparable harm to our communities across the world. This is no longer the case. Last week I had a drEAm that I went to testify in waimEA at @nsfgov ‘s scooping meeting- the meeting they’re having to check the boxes so they can force they’re agenda even without CONSENT. I was called to go because I needed them to sEA my face, to feel my presence, and to hEAr my voice. I needed to tell them all the ways I’ve witnessed the masses say #aoleTMT and to tell them all the ways I’ve said NO too from wherever I am. I asked them what more they needed to take our NO as exactly that, a NO!? I told them the TMT will never be built on #maunakEA. I told them enough, that they have and have had enough. Pa’a ka waha, you are fat with greed and star gazing, resulting in nothing that truly lEAds or feeds. If you can’t take me saying these things, ‘āina will swallow you up just wait and sEA. . . PRO DEEPER: Kānaka are ‘āina too, we can mimic and become what we need like mighty waves that rise and grab quickly. . . PRO REAL TALK: We get hit everywhere all at once often. They’re literally have us dew and say the things multiple times to deplete us of our resources.
