Here’s a behind the seams post on the rehearsal dress… The first two pics are more detailed shots of the finished dress. The next two are of the inspo dress. To make the puff sleeves I went back to the pattern design for the Snow White dress I made in 2004. But it was a size 2-3-4 and trying to grade the pattern was not the best use of my time. Thanks to EBay I was able to find it in a 10-12-14 and create the sleeves from the train and adapt them to the dress. The last two pics are of my daughter wearing her Snow White costume and the patterns. There was something nostalgic about using the sleeves pattern again 20 years later. It was also reassuring to use a familiar pattern because so much of alterations like this are just making it up as you go along. This is my second McCall’s M8281, view C, in a week 😂 I couldn’t resist trying it in a different weight of fabric; so this is a viscose from my stash (I’m still on the hunt for a seersucker… 😉). It was trickier sewing up the V-neck with a lighter weight fabric, and the topstitching alongside the front centre seam was harder than I thought- especially as the neck facing extends down the front to make it a little more stable 🤔 I didn’t add pockets to this dress, as I never find viscose pockets very satisfactory (too flappy!) My front armscye facing adjustment seems to have worked and I topstitched those without any issue. I did take 3” off the bottom hem, mainly because I managed to cut the dress out of 2m! (The pattern calls for 2.6m 🙌) However, I like the length better and I’m going to shorten my cotton lawn version by the same amount. ~~Overall, I think I prefer this dress in a lighter weight fabric: there’s plenty of swish and it hangs really nicely. I’ve got covid at last, and it’s absolutely kicking my arse. It’s been 10 days, and I’m still not great! Fortunately this dress is definitely secret-pyjamas, perfect for working from home (and also napping on the couch). It’s a big 4 pattern that I’ve had for ages, and made once in a scuba fabric that was very pretty but which felt absolutely revolting to wear 😅 luckily this is a nice soft swishy cotton rib knit, and it doesn’t make my skin crawl! I’m looking forward to wearing it all autumn with different jumpers and cardis layered over it. Throwback Thursday! This was one of my favorite dresses. I made it for my Confirmation in 1977 out of a textured cotton. It was probably a McCall’s or Simplicity pattern because they are my mainstays. Hand-embroidered boho style, pull-on, no zipper or buttons, with lots of topstitching. It has held up well! How it started vs how its going. My love and obsession of McCalls 7948 continues. My collection is now at 4 in a variety of forms. 1️⃣: The OG. Fabric from spotlight 2️⃣: My nan inspired. Fabric again from spotlight 3️⃣: Saw the introduction of button, when I customised due to limited fabric. I also included a drawstring at the wait to cinch it in a bit more. Is it too early for a summer dress? I've been looking at this pattern for 2 years. It's pretty basic but smth catched my eye. Besides, I need to practice making curved seams and some other, more complicated sewing stuff. I'm used to Burda patterns which are either printed on millions of A4 and then assembled, or copied over from the actual oldschool magazine. This one came printed on a veeery thin transparent paper. I’ve gone back and fourth so many times on whether or not I like this top. I made it when I first started sewing and I was still figuring out what patterns and fabrics paired together best for me. When I first finished it, I thought it looked chic but now sometimes I think it reads a bit pirate, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing (maybe it’s pirate chic?!). Maybe one day I’ll hack off the sleeves to make them shorter and that might help me like it a little better… we’ll see. In the meantime, I’m enjoying it layered under this cardigan. Tried to cram in one more #memade garment in 2023… but it’s not gonna happen before I go on vacation 😔 Posting a #wipsewing pic instead. After seeing #poorthingsfilm and going through all of my #vintagesewingpatterns I wanted a puffy sleeved top. What a make! I'm so happy with the result! And a joyfully one too. I've been working on projects for the kids with deadlines for most of the year so it was lovely to start a project with no time constraints. At first it was fun and enjoyable - all familiar sewing territory. Then came the button placket and collar - unfamiliar .. initially scary .. but then a satisfying skill building project. It was a long project but such a wonderful dress to add to the wardrobe made it worthwhile! Stitched up a patchwork apron using dressmaking leftovers and an old sheet for the lining and ruffle. Used #mcallspatterns #m5284 and made it according to the pattern but added a dart at the top because it sits better with my curves. The curves in this picture are provided by a cat under the blanket. Added some patches because I'm hoping to be back volunteering at my favourite museum very very soon and an apron is quite de rigueur when cleaning old toys.

Images 1-5 McCall’s 6044 in cotton/linen blend. I altered the front and back bodice pattern pieces a few years ago for color blocking purposes. I reused those pattern pieces to emphasize select seam lines but used one type of fabric. The selected seams were sewn to allow for exposed seams, which were top stitched in gold thread and the seam allowances frayed. This make is at least several months old, just never posted. In an unusual shift in personality for me, I've been working through the UFO (unfinished object) pile over the past couple of months before moving on to new projects. This is another project that I cut out two summers ago and never sewed. The pattern is #mccalls8087 with a couple of alterations. I added darts to the sides of the bodice pieces and stitched part of the center front together to avoid gaping. As with a lot of my fabrics, this was thrifted. I am a sucker for any and all chambrays that I come across, especially traditional light blue chambray.
