Razia Sultana, the first female Muslim ruler of the Indian subcontinent, ascended to power amidst political turmoil and opposition from Turkic nobles. Razia's assertiveness and appointment of non-Turkic officers further fueled resentment among the nobility, leading to rebellions and conspiracies against her rule. During her reign, Razia faced internal revolts and external threats, including conflicts with rebellious governors and Shia uprisings. She attempted to consolidate her power through military campaigns and strategic appointments, but her efforts were hampered by persistent opposition from Turkic nobles. Despite her successes in certain military campaigns, Razia's rule was marked by ongoing challenges to her authority and attempts to undermine her leadership. Razia's downfall came with the betrayal of key allies, including her husband Altunia, and the ultimate defeat by her half-brother Bahram's forces. After being deposed and subsequently killed in 1240, Razia's grave became a pilgrimage site, but the neglect of her tomb in modern times reflects the complex legacy of her reign. Monkey general Hanuman, Southern India, Chola period, ca. 1000. Cleveland Museum of Art (ID: 1980.26) Hanuman is one of the most popular heroic figures of the epic Ramayana. In the story, he was indispensable in the search for the abducted wife of Rama, an incarnation of Vishnu. He is able to fly through the air and lift mountains, but here he is shown as a humble servant of the god. His gestures signify his humility and he bows slightly in reverence to his master. Bronzes during the Chola period spanning the 800s to 1200s were solid cast, using the lost-wax method. Each one is unique and would have been kept in the treasury of the temple until the festival day when the presence of the deity is invited to reside in the sculpture, which is then bathed, dressed, and paraded through the streets. This figure would have been paraded with a group of other images depicting Rama, his wife, and his brother. Delhi Sultanate under the Mamluk Dynasty, 1206-1290. The rise and evolution of the Sultanate of Delhi during the times of its first ruling dynasty – the Mamluks (also known as the Slave or Ghulam Dynasty), an influential military class of slave soldiers between 1206 and 1290. Following the assassination of the childless Muhammad bin Sam, popularly known as Muhammad of Ghor, in 1206, the Ghurid Sultanate shattered into minor kingdoms ruled by Mamluk commanders. The appointed governor of the Indian territories, Qutb ud-Din Aibak, a Turkic slave general, became the ruler of what was to become the Sultanate of Delhi. ~ Jaipur city has many mysteries and thrilling stories in the golden pages of its history. One such story is of the royal five-coloured flag of the Jaipur royal family. Which is a symbol of the valour, supremacy, courage and bravery of Mirza Raja Mansingh. Renowned as a stalwart commander in the ranks of Mughal Emperor Akbar's army, Mansingh ventured into the heart of Afghanistan during the 15th century. Confronting five formidable tribes of Kabul—including Yusufzai, Karzai, Afridi, Mohammad Masoodi, and Ghazna Khel—known for their belligerence, Mansingh emerged victorious.Mansinghpura, Mangarhi and, Mughal Chowki were established there. There used to be a custom among these tribes that upon their defeat, as a token of surrender, the tribes customarily tore a fragment of their state flags. Subsequently, Mansingh acquired flags of four hues—yellow, red, green, and black—symbolizing triumph. Incorporating the fifth color representing the Amer state, a resplendent five-colored flag was crafted, ultimately becoming the esteemed emblem of Jaipur. 'The early Lingayat community holds lessons for us today. This medieval movement was a social coalition, which accepted new groups into the fold and created a new identity, bringing together all who worshipped Shiva. To do so, they were more than willing to break away from some norms. Women were allowed more autonomy (provided they were Shaivites). Non-Brahmin groups had their traditions respected and brought into mainstream worship (provided they were Shaivites). But to tighten their own group identity, Harihara and other early Lingayat poets created an “other”. Which is to say, anyone who was not Shaivite. Progress and emancipation was for “us”, not for “them”. Ultimately, the medieval community was unable to leverage its ideas into real political power. Instead, Lingayats evolved into a relatively amorphous, exclusive social group. In subsequent centuries, it was Vaishnavism that became the Deccan’s premier imperial religion, building a massive base of popular support, pilgrimage sites, and monastic networks. In historical terms, it’s only recently, thanks to intensive political lobbying and consolidation around priestly lineages, that Lingayats have emerged as a major force in Karnataka’s elections.' Note: Harihara does not actually refer to the Lingayat community by their present-day name, or even as Virashaivas. He prefers the more amorphous term sharana, which in his usage approximates “saint”. For ease of reading, “Lingayat” in this article generally refers to the medieval sharana community and not to the present-day Lingayat social group. The other day at Kathika Cultural Centre, where Swapna Liddle and I were talking about depictions of Mughal Delhi in literature (which we took forward into cinema as well), I spoke of how Hindi cinema has (had?) this habit of focussing on romance, of making everything revolve about romance. Which is perhaps a reflection, too, of a greater tendency to spice up things to make them seem more romantic. Thus, you have those carefully positioned mirrors at Chittor in which Padmini's beauty could be seen from afar... On Sunday, we were at Lodhi Gardens. Crossing Athpula, I saw a guide with a couple of Western tourists. He pointed out the tomb of Sikandar Lodhi nearby, and I overheard him tell them what it was. Then: "It is believed that Shahjahan and Mumtaz Mahal had been walking here, and saw the tomb reflected in this stream. That is where Shahjahan got the idea of a tomb reflecting in water, and promised Mumtaz that he would commemorate her through a tomb like that." For one, Sikandar Lodhi's tomb has a fairly low dome - unlike the magnificence of the Taj - and the wall that encloses it is not just fairly high, but also fairly far apart from the dome. Thus, the tomb cannot reflect in the water, no matter what. Secondly (correct me if I'm wrong), but I doubt if Shahjahan spent much time in Delhi when Mumtaz was still alive. And, of course: how would Shahjahan have known he would outlive Mumtaz? Sigh. Seen here: 1. Athpula (this eight-piered bridge dates form Akbar's time) 2. Mughal Empire, AR Rupee, Shah Jahan (1628-58 CE), Surat Mint. Shah Jahan is well remembered for his Taj Mahal but do you know he once revoltand declared war against his own father in 1622 but was defeated and pardoned by Jahangir? Jahan He was half Sunni Muslim from his father's side and half Rajput Hindu from his mother side by blood. He built a number of architectures apart from Taj Mahal such as Red fort and Jama Masjid at Delhi. He fell ill in 1658 and nominated his eldest son Dara Sikhoh as his successor but Aurangzeb another son of Shah Jahan defeated and killed his three other brothers named Murad Baksh, Shah Suja and Dara Shikoh and declared himself Emperor. Shah Jahan's last day were spent as a prisoner at Agra fort. His eldest daughter Jahanara took care of him.
