First of all, I hate romance books. Second, I knew it was heavy with depression and grief and I didn’t know if my mental health could handle it. I went into it with the mindset of I will give it three chapters and if I’m struggling, I’ll put it down and come back to it later. What actually happened was I stayed up until midnight and read it in one sitting. While I am still not into romance books, this wasn’t really that. It was raw and relatable. All emotions were out in full display, even if the characters were struggling too much with their own issues to see it. Parts of it were difficult to read. I shouted out loud at fictional characters. Because they are so damn likeable and you just want to help them. Not to shabby for a book I picked solely bc of the cover.

В этом книга не обманула - она идёт по достаточно привычной канве - главная героиня в растрёпанных чувствах, бежит от проблем и от себя, укрывается на острове у своей эксцентричной тётушки, находит старый непонятный дневник, и понеслось. В принципе, я к такого рода книгам отношусь положительно, люблю их почитать и отдохнуть, несмотря на то, что в них всегда присутствует какой-то детективный флёр скелетов в шкафу. Это произведение не исключение, читалось легко, но в то же время история из дневника меня лично действительно захватила, очень хотелось узнать, чем же все закончится, и кто есть кто. О последнем, кстати, догадаться легко - некоторые детали очень хорошо указывают на связь персонажей из прошлого и будущего. Но то, как автор объяснила имена из дневника и жизни для меня большой минус. Ну очень топорно и неестественно. Так же разочаровала концовка - все-таки с хэппи эндами главное не переборщить. Чтобы не спойлерить, скажу так - окончание ветки в настоящем абсолютно ожидаемо и логично, особенно для этого жанра и автора. I’ve been having fomo seeing everyone post about the Sarah J Maas universe. Therefore, I decided to reread Throne of Glass. My first read was in 2015 so I really hadn’t remembered many of the details. It was a super fun reread although I will say there were a few glaringly obvious flaws (in my opinion). Such as the multiple times Chaol and Dorian snuck up on Celaena when she was sleeping … like so much for the world’s most notorious assassin. I loved the Throne of Glass series as a whole but I was still surprised how fun this first novel was. The stakes were relatively low and the plot has yet to become too complicated. It was just an entirely bingable and fun read. I’m planning to reread the next two books as well but I don’t know if I can subject myself to Kingdom of Ash again, that book really ripped my heart out. One day, Abbey visits Philadelphia to prepare for Camille’s upcoming wedding where she is the Maid of Honor. At the bachelor-bachelorette party, she meets Jax, a charming Paul McCartney lookalike who is also CEO of a real estate company. Despite interest from potential suitors (including Jax), Abbey still suffers deeply from low self esteem due to bullying which started during her school days. She finds it difficult to be confident and see herself as the beautiful, attractive woman that she is. As the book progresses, we see her growing more confident, while we also learn more about her parents, and the conflict she has with her sister. An incident threatens to put a stop to the relationship between Abbey and Jax but thankfully, we move beyond the misunderstanding for them to have their Happy Ever After. The ending is beautifully written and perfect for Abbey. When the Reckoning Comes is reminder of the very real horrors of slavery that white America wants us to forget. First things first, I have to give this novel a MASSIVE trigger warning - I have a high tolerance for disturbing reads, but there are parts of this that are extremely vivid so please proceed with caution. Mira returns to her segregated hometown for her childhood friend’s wedding at a plantation (like helloooo????). While white guests wear antebellum themed clothing and watch historical reenactments, Mira discovers the property is haunted by its former slaves. LaTanya McQueen gripped me from the start, setting the stage for unease with her atmospheric writing. The plot was set up so perfectly, but I feel like it stumbled at the end. Things get really abstract and I was hoping for more outright vengeance… ie. to see the guests get wrecked by ghosts LOL. Overall though, it was a great exploration of the main character’s anti-blackness and how far white America will go to dilute the past while being outright disrespectful. 📖 May Hopefuls 📖 I don’t technically make a monthly “TBR” because I hate the expectation that I need to finish them all. So I started making a “hopefuls” list and if I get to them great! If not it’s whatever 🤷🏻♀️. Currently I’m listening to The Only Plane in the Sky: An Oral History of 9/11… and just wow. About half way done and it’s been an emotional one for sure. But the audiobook is great so far and I highly recommend listening to it. My other two current reads are The Women by Kristin Hannah and Butcher and Blackbird by Brynne Weaver and they’re both great so far. As for my hopefuls… this might be totally pushing it with this many in a month that’s already going to be rough due to starting cancer treatment and just having a lot on my plate. But we will see! Also… One Dark Window has been on my hopefuls list for the past like 3 months 😂 Whyyyyy do I keep pushing it?! One of these days I’ll read it I swear. When I think about crafting spaces that hold and emote I always think about how design can be used to include and exclude. Interior designers and architects of the past played a part in creating physical realities that held up and even glorified unjust systems and unfair practices. I think about how space and architecture has been and continues to be used historically in the U.S. to “other,” subjugate and marginalize. Today when I look at the prison industrial complex, access and inclusion for differently abled and LQBTQIA + folk, and even schools for our kids (that now have to be shelters from bullets) it’s clear to see how space and place play a massive role from behavior, how we see ourselves, to learning and o much more. Even within the “wellness” industry I’ve witnessed tendencies toward appropriation and exclusion even as the practices of ancient modalities are most often rooted in community, earth honoring, and acknowledgment of the sanctity of all-life connection. Author Susie Wise (and the Stanford d.school) explores how design in general can help bring people together in simple ways. Included are stories and inspirations from an array of scholars and leaders along with tools and tips. This reading confirmed for me that there is myriad of methods to acknowledge connection while honoring and encouraging authenticity- from the way and the how we invite folks into space, to the way we communicate to food, and ritual.
