Three things you probably didn’t know about me… Especially if you are new around here πŸ‘‹πŸΌ β™‘ I’m Jodie and I am Autistic. Nope, scrap that! I’m Autistic and absolutely 100% proud and privileged to be able to share my experiences with you in the hope that we can bring about change, and balance, and inspire NURTURE throughout not just the community, but adventurously the universe! β™‘ 7 years ago I couldn't have imagined the peace we've found at home today. As a neurodivergent adult to neurodivergent children, things were sometimes overwhelming and chaotic. Our journey to a more peaceful home life started with calming my own storm, finding my groove, and embracing instinctive parenting. Every step has been driven by love, persistence…and a whole lot of patience! β™‘ I founded The Nurture Programme during the 2020 pandemic! There was a huge loss of support and connection for families like mine, so The Nurture Programme was created to fill that void. We did so by creating a regular and consistent neuro-affirming presence on social media, connecting with vulnerable families and sharing insights into our lived experience. The main goal was to help families move from CRISIS to CALM within their households Growth and change is never linear, but I’m so proud of the community I have built, as well as all of the support that I’ve been able to offer to families (and those working with families) just like ours πŸ’ž I’d love you to share one thing about you that can inspire others 🫢🏼 #NurtureProgramme #NurturingAdvocacyProgramme #PDANurtureProgramme #NurturingADHDProgramme #NurturingConsultancyProgramme #NurturingAnxietyProgramme #NurturingAutismProgramme #NurturingNeurodivergenceProgramme #LearnAboutAutism #AutisticTeenager #NurtureConsultancy #AutisticChild #SpecialNeedsJourney #AutismFamily #AutismCommunity #MeetTheSENParent #AutisticAdult #RADICALparenting #radicalparentingprogramme #CalmConnectionCoRegulation

It's such a busy time of year with so many social events. Do you self-regulate in public spaces? Does stimming come naturally to you? Most times I can hit fight response before I realise that I have become overwhelmed by the sensory environment. I have gotten better since my diagnosis, which is why I now always wear comfortable clothing and try and remember to take my ear pods wherever I go so that I have them on hand if need be. How do you manage this? #NurtureProgramme #AutismEducator #SENDAdvocacy #SpecialNeedsAwareness #AutismResearch #SENKids #MeetTheSENParent #AutisticAdult #AutismDiagnosis #AutismAdvocacy #TeachersOfTheGram #TeacherInspiration #TeachersSupportTeachers #ThriveNotSurvive #SENDSupport #SpecialNeedsFamily #BeYourselfAlways #AutismLove #Neurodiversity #SpecialEd #DifferentNotLess #MumsSupportingMums #MotherhoodUnplugged #BeDifferent #PositiveThinking #PDAParenting #LateDiagnosedAutistic #AdultAutism #Neurodivergence

Happy Poppy, happy Mummy. β™₯️ I’m struggling to find the festive, Christmas loving AmΓ©lie this year. She’s in there, somewhere, if I peel enough layers. Trying to show up, to β€˜turn on the magic switchβ€˜. Whether I like it or not, my mood depends heavily on Poppy’s. It can be quite overbearing. If she’s going through something, so am I. When she needs to fight, I draw my sword right beside her. She’s had many hard days this year, so you’ve guessed it: me too. Has the struggle changed me? Possibly. I’m not as cheerful and light hearted, not as quick to look on the brighter side of things. I hate it. I want my happy, quirky, silly, sparkly side back. But I can’t seem to shake off the funk as easily as before. I dwell in the darkness longer. I let its cloak of heavy burdens wrap around me and try not to suffocate underneath… My smile comes out less, and often it doesn’t reach up all the way to my eyes. It’s there because it has to. If I let it disappear completely, I’m not sure if or how I’d get it back. The frowns come more naturally. The tears, too, while the laughs are scattered and few. Ironically I’ve just ended four years of therapy, because I’ve had to make time for other things, and it seemed right to let the space I’ve held for all these years go to another parent in need. In those four years, we went through so much. Poppy’s Rett diagnosis, had a new baby, then a house move, then a pandemic, Lou’s autism diagnosis, and last but not least, some sort of β€œseizures” started ruining our quality of life. There is so much to heal from. It’s hard to let go of the hurt. To move on, at a time where there’s so much uncertainty in our lives and many hard decisions to take. Without therapy as my crutches, I have to stand on my own two feet. I’ve been referred to a new service. After Lou’s diagnosis, it seemed right to assess me as well (though that’s a story for another time...) It could explain why I had a bit of an identity crisis and all that jazz. Figuring out how to help myself, and get Poppy better too… It’s been a lot! We’re coming out the other side. Wars are still raging, but slowly we’re getting there. ✨ #honestmotherhood

🌟 Day 5: Gratitude Art 🌟 Today we're going to tap into our inner artist. Art is a splendid way to convey gratitude. Here's what you need to do: Gather some art materials - paper, pens, pencils, markers, paints - whatever you've got and enjoy using. Ponder on something you're grateful for. Craft a piece of art that symbolises this gratitude. It could be a sketch, painting, collage, or any form of art. Don't fret about it being perfect. The aim isn't to create a work of art but to express your gratitude creatively. Remember, art is a personal expression. There's no right or wrong way to do it. Take a snap of your gratitude artwork and share it on Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn with the hashtag #SCRGratitudeJourney. Let's see those creative expressions of gratitude! I’m writing this post partly for #rettsyndromeawaraness but more so to give you an update about how Poppy is doing 🫢🏻 If you followed my frustrated stories of the gruelling journey trying to get Poppy’s β€œseizures-like” episodes diagnosed, you’ve read that we were let down by our medical team. Refusing to order the longer EEGs to get a proper chance at capturing an episode then, dismissing our concerns that there is more to it than breath holding, while Poppy keeps deteriorating and even school is getting concerned that they are seeing regression… It’s been a very stressful time. It has felt isolating, too. Juggling and struggling more than usual, feeling like we’re fighting windmills. Is it epilepsy? Is it Rett behaviours? Each video we send, we hear back it is not β€œconvincing evidence” … Meanwhile we live on the edge of panic, tense at every shake or twitch, with 999 on speed dial as she might struggle to breathe. For a long time I didn’t really grasp the β€œmedically complex” aspect of her diagnosis. The list of medication she takes and the number of specialists she sees has grown. But it didn’t really hit me until we had to weigh the pros and cons of β€œfeeding tube surgery”, and now β€œanti epileptic meds”. It feels impossible to know what to do, get it right or know how to make decisions under pressure. It all feels like a shot in the dark with our fingers crossed behind our backs praying we all survive this unscathed. When we didn’t know where to turn anymore and felt there were no options left, I turned to you, friends, fellow parents in the trenches, and I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for the advice, the support, the hugs (virtual and in the flesh), for listening when the Doctors wouldn’t, as well as the help you gave us. Thanks to you, we were referred to the CIPP Rett centre. And for the first time in months I’m hopeful again that we will manage to get this properly diagnosed and get Poppy well again. THANK YOU πŸ’œ #rettfamily

🌟 Day 4: Gratitude for Self 🌟 Today we are going to focus on self-appreciation. It’s about time we show some gratitude towards ourselves. Here's what you need to do: Find a quiet place and take a few moments to think about yourself. Reflect on your qualities, achievements, efforts, or just about anything that you appreciate about yourself. Write down three things about yourself for which you are grateful. They can be physical attributes, skills, talents, or even personality traits. Remember, showing gratitude towards ourselves helps build self-esteem and fosters self-love. Take a picture of your self-gratitude list (you can blur out the text if it's personal) and share it on Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn with the hashtag #SCRGratitudeJourney. Let's take a moment to appreciate ourselves! 🌟 Day 2: Gratitude Letter 🌟 Today, we're stepping up our gratitude game a notch. We're going to write a gratitude letter. Here's what you need to do: Think about someone in your life who has had a positive impact on you, big or small. It could be a family member, a friend, a teacher, or even a kind stranger. Write a letter to them expressing your appreciation. Let them know how they've made a difference in your life and how thankful you are for their presence. If you feel comfortable, you could consider sending this letter to the person. If not, that's okay too. The act of writing it alone can cultivate feelings of gratitude. Remember, there's no right or wrong way to express gratitude. It's all about acknowledging the goodness in our lives and the people who contribute to it. Take a picture of your letter (you can blur out the text if it's personal) and share it on Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn with the hashtag #SCRGratitudeJourney. As we draw nearer to the Gratitude Challenge on the 15th of October, I thought it would be the ideal time to explore what gratitude truly means and its remarkable benefits, especially for mums of SEN children. At its heart, gratitude is a feeling of appreciation. It's about recognising and acknowledging all the good in our lives. It's about focusing on the positives, no matter how small they may appear. Practising gratitude can have profound effects on our wellbeing. It can heighten happiness, reduce stress, and improve our relationships. For SEN mums, these benefits are particularly vital. The daily challenges you face might sometimes feel overwhelming, but cultivating a practice of gratitude can help maintain a positive outlook. Here's why every busy mum should make time for gratitude: It helps you appreciate the joys of motherhood, even amidst the challenges. It fosters a positive perspective, making the tough days a tad easier. It strengthens resilience, an essential trait for any parent. It promotes relaxation and reduces stress, helping you stay calm and focused. I understand that, as mums, your plates are already brimming. You might wonder, "How am I supposed to find time for this?" But the beauty of gratitude is that it doesn't require much time. It can be as simple as jotting down three things you're grateful for at the end of the day or taking a moment to savour a cup of tea in peace. So, as we gear up for the Gratitude Challenge, I encourage you all to give it a try. You might be surprised at the difference it makes. Remember, you're doing an incredible job, and you deserve to recognise and celebrate that. πŸ’– #SENmums #selfcare #gratitudepractice #senmum #senparenting #meetthesenparent #additionalneedskids #specialneedskids #specialneedsfamilieis #additionalneedsfamily #specialneedsmum #autismmom #autismmum #specialneedsmom #specialneedsmommy #specialneedsmomlife #specialeducation #aspergers #autism #downsyndrome #downsyndromemom #cerebralpalsymom #autismmom #autismmomma #autismmommy #autismmomlife #adhd #adhdmom #gratitude #gratitudechallenge

We all appreciate that being a mum to SEN children can be immensely rewarding, yet it can also bring its share of challenges and stress. Even on the most hectic of days, it's crucial to remember that taking a moment for self-care is not just beneficial for you, but for your children too. One quick and effective stress reliever I'd like to introduce to you is the yoga pose 'Viparita Karani', also known as the 'Legs-Up-The-Wall' pose. This involves elevating your legs, with or without support from a wall and can be practised anywhere, at any time. Viparita Karani offers an array of benefits: It relaxes your mind, fostering a sense of tranquillity and peace. It can alleviate headaches and migraines, granting much-needed relief. It assuages cramps in your legs and feet, particularly beneficial after a long day on your feet. It boosts your energy levels, helping you feel revitalised and refreshed. As you adopt this pose, I encourage you to incorporate a positive affirmation. Hold onto the thought, "I feel light, and my mind is unburdened." Let these words inspire and uplift you, reinforcing the positive effects of the pose. Remember, even on the busiest of days, a few moments of self-care can make a world of difference. For more details on Viparita Karani and other stress-relieving yoga poses, do visit my blog: https://rfr.bz/i6qh2zp Look after yourself, because you're worth it. πŸ’– e #senmum #senparenting #meetthesenparent #senparents #additionalneedskids #specialneedskids #specialneedsfamilieis #additionalneedsfamily #specialneedsmum #autismmom #autismmum #specialneedsmom #specialneedsmommy #specialneedsmomlife #specialeducation #aspergers #autism #downsyndrome #downsyndromemom #cerebralpalsymom #sensoryprocessingdisorder #autismmom #autismmomma #autismmommy #autismmomlife #adhd #adhdmom #gratitude #gratitudechallenge

As we move closer to the start of our social media gratitude challenge on October 15th, I wanted to talk about creating a habit of practising gratitude first thing in the morning. Often, our minds are freshest and most receptive when we've just woken up. Before the hustle and bustle of the day begins, before our to-do lists start running through our minds, let's take a moment to centre ourselves and focus on gratitude. It can be as simple as thinking of three things you're grateful for - maybe it's the sound of your child's laughter, a good cup of tea or simply the fact that you have another day to make a difference in your child's life. As we start our gratitude challenge, I encourage you to incorporate this practice into your morning routine. Share these moments of gratitude with us using the hashtag #SENmumsGratitudeChallenge. Let's inspire each other, lift each other up, and create a wave of positivity that can carry us through even the most challenging days. Remember, the practice of gratitude doesn't mean ignoring the difficulties we face. It's about shifting our focus, recognising the good amidst the challenges, and fostering a mindset that empowers us to keep going. So, let's get ready to kick off our gratitude challenge with a heart full of appreciation and a mindset ready for positivity. Together, we can make every day a little brighter. πŸ’– #SENmums #gratitudechallenge #selfcare #spiritualgrowth #senmum #senparenting #meetthesenparent #senparents #specialneedskids #specialneedsfamilieis #additionalneedsfamily #specialneedsmum #autismmom #autismmum #specialneedsmom #specialneedsmommy #specialneedsmomlife #aspergers #autism #downsyndromemom #cerebralpalsymom #sensoryprocessingdisorder #autismmom #autismmomma #autismmommy #autismmomlife #williamssyndrome #adhd #adhdmom

πŸŒΊπŸ’• Hello, lovely mums of special needs little ones! πŸ’•πŸŒΊ We all have those days, don't we? Days that feel like a mountain to climb, when the routines seem more like tasks and less like the comforting structure they are meant to be. It can turn routine tasks into moments of joy, and challenges into opportunities for growth. Here are a few ways to find gratitude in your daily routines: 1️⃣ Kick off your day with a gratitude journal: Before the hustle and bustle of the day begins, take a moment to jot down three things you're grateful for. They can be as simple as a good night's sleep or a steaming cuppa. This practice sets a positive tone for the day. 2️⃣ Find joy in the mundane: Whether it's doing the washing up, making lunch, or helping your child with their therapy exercises, look for moments of joy. Maybe it's the sound of your child's laughter or the satisfaction of a job well done. These moments are worth celebrating! 3️⃣ End your day with reflection: As the day winds down, reflect on the moments when you felt happy, loved, or accomplished. These reflections can help you find gratitude, even on the toughest days. Remember, every day may not be good, but there is something good in every day. And you, dear mums, are doing a brilliant job! 🌸🌼 Good day, Incredible Mums! 🌼🌸 As the loving and devoted parents of SEN (Special Educational Needs) children, we are often faced with unique challenges that test our strength and resilience. These moments can sometimes leave us feeling overwhelmed and doubting our capabilities. πŸ’” For instance, you might be dealing with a particularly tough day where nothing seems to go right. Your child is struggling with their sensory issues, refusing to eat their meals, or having a meltdown that lasts for hours. In those moments, it's all too easy to think, "I'm not strong enough to handle this." But remember, that's just a thought, not a fact. 🧠 Today, I invite you to pay close attention to such thoughts. Notice them, but don't let them define you or your abilities. Instead, let's consciously choose to replace them with empowering affirmations. πŸ’ͺ Next time you find yourself thinking, "I'm not strong enough," gently remind yourself, "I have all the strength I need." Because you do, dear mum. You are stronger than you know. πŸ’– You've got this, and remember, it's perfectly okay to reach out and ask for help when you need it. We're all in this together, supporting one another in this special journey of parenthood. 🀝 Stay strong, stay positive, and keep shining. 🌟 #SENParents #StrengthInAdversity #Affirmations #YouAreEnough #senmum #senparenting #meetthesenparent #senparents #senparentssupport #additionalneedskids #specialneedskids #specialneedsfamilieis #additionalneedsfamily #specialneedsmum #sensorykids #autismmom #autismmum #mentalhealth #selfcare #mindfulness #gratitude #yoga #meditation #positiveaffirmations

If you’ve followed the β€œglasses saga” in my stories, you already know getting these was not easy, and boy are we glad to finally have Poppy’s second pair of special frames from @tomatoglassesuk - they’re super comfy and purple, for Rett, of course. Daddy picked well, didn’t he? πŸ’œ There aren’t many brands who cater to SEN children, and it’s even rarer to find stores who display them. Most big stores like Boots or Specsavers don’t - and we had a terrible time in both those places. But, luckily, we found a lovely independent opticians who were amazing. It was appointments only, so took a little while, but the care and effort they put in to help us made it all worth it. They did not turn us down saying: β€œusually we just put glasses on the children’s noses and they tell us what fitsβ€β€¦πŸ™„ They patiently took the measurements needed, pre ordered several sizes, and ensured the fit was perfect for Poppy. She didn’t have to magically learn to speak to get great glasses, how bizarre… πŸ‘€ And doesn’t she look so grown up and cute in them? What do you think? πŸ€πŸ€“ #newglasseswhodis

πŸŒ»πŸ’› Hello, my brilliant Super Mums, Navigating the world of doctors and therapists when you're a mum of a SEN teen can often feel like an uphill battle. Sometimes, their clinical perspective on our children's abilities might not align with our more optimistic outlook. It's a challenge, but remember, it's one we can overcome. πŸ’ͺπŸ’« One powerful tool in this journey is language. The words we use have the power to shape not just our reality but also the perceptions of others. That's why I emphasise so much on 'empowered language' in the SEN Rebalanced Life Programme. πŸ“šπŸŒˆ Empowered language is about speaking from a place of strength and positivity. It's about asserting our beliefs in our children's potential and maintaining our optimism, even when faced with a less encouraging viewpoint. πŸ—£οΈπŸ’– And the beautiful thing about empowered language? It's contagious. When we consistently speak with hope and resilience, we can influence those around us - yes, even the doctors and therapists - to start viewing our children through the same lens. πŸŽ‡πŸ’ž Here are a few tips for using empowered language: Focus on Abilities: Talk about what your child CAN do, not what they can't. 🌟 Emphasise Growth: Highlight progress, no matter how small. 🌱 Stay Positive: Frame challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. 🌈 Remember, mums, changing the conversation starts with us. And I'm here to support you every step of the way. If you'd like to learn more about empowered language and how it can shift your interactions, I invite you to book a free consultation with me. Click the link in my bio to schedule yours today. I look forward to chatting with you! πŸ’–βœ¨ Take care, mums. πŸŒ»πŸ’› Hello, my brilliant Super Mums, Navigating the world of doctors and therapists when you're a mum of a SEN teen can often feel like an uphill battle. 🌈 Remember, mums, changing the conversation starts with us. πŸŒ»πŸ’› Hello, my incredible Super Mums, Raising a child with Special Educational Needs (SEN) comes with its unique set of challenges, and one of the hardest to navigate is often the additional financial stress. πŸ’ΈπŸ˜” From specialist therapies and educational resources to adapted equipment and possibly even home modifications - the costs can quickly add up. And then there's the potential loss of income if one parent has to reduce their working hours or leave their job entirely to become a full-time carer. It's a lot to manage, and it can feel overwhelming. πŸ’”πŸ  But amidst these challenges, I want to introduce you to a tool that could help lighten the load: the abundance mindset. πŸŒˆπŸ’ An abundance mindset is essentially the belief that there's enough for everyone in the world - enough resources, love, opportunities, and, yes, even money. It's about focusing on what we have rather than what we lack. πŸŒπŸ’– Here are a few ways you can cultivate an abundance mindset: Gratitude: Start and end each day by acknowledging something you're grateful for. It shifts your focus to positivity and abundance. πŸ™βœ¨ Visualisation: Imagine your life as you want it to be, not as it is. This can help attract positive outcomes. πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈπŸŒŒ Affirmations: Regularly affirm that you are deserving of abundance. The more you say it, the more you'll believe it. πŸ’¬πŸ’« Remember, mums, changing our mindset isn't an overnight process, but persistence and patience can make a significant difference. Now, I'd love to hear from you all. What's one small step you could take today towards cultivating an abundance mindset? Let's share our ideas and inspire each other! πŸŽ‰πŸ’‘ Take care, mums. You're doing an amazing job. πŸ’– #senmum #senparenting #meetthesenparent #senparents #additionalneedskids #specialneedskids #specialneedsfamilieis #additionalneedsfamily #specialneedsmum #autismmom #autismmum #specialneedsmom #specialneedsmommy #specialneedsmomlife #specialeducation #aspergers #autism #downsyndrome #downsyndromemom #cerebralpalsy #cerebralpalsymom #sensoryprocessingdisorder #autismmom #autismmomma #autismmommy #autismmomlife #angelmansyndrome #williamssyndrome #adhd #adhdmom

One of the many hats we wear as mums to SEN teens is that of a decision-maker. We are constantly faced with an overwhelming array of choices related to our child's medical care and treatment. From deciding on therapies and interventions to selecting specialists, to navigating educational provisions - the list goes on and on. πŸ“šπŸ’Š Making these decisions can be incredibly stressful, but I want to share with you a concept that might make it a little easier - intuitive decision-making. 🧠✨ Intuitive decision-making involves tapping into our inner wisdom and using our natural instincts to guide our choices. It's about trusting ourselves and our innate understanding of our child's unique needs. Here are a few self-care techniques that can help you strengthen your intuition: Meditation: Regularly quieting your mind can help you tune in to your inner voice and trust your gut feelings. πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈπŸ’« Journaling: Writing down your thoughts and feelings can provide clarity and help you identify patterns or insights. πŸ“πŸ•―οΈ Mindful Walking: A walk in nature can clear the mind and foster a sense of inner peace, enabling more intuitive thinking. πŸŒ³πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ Remember, mums, these intuitive decisions come from a place of deep love and understanding of your child. Trust yourself. You've got this. πŸ’ͺπŸ’– If you'd like further support or guidance on this journey, I invite you to schedule a free consultation with me. πŸŒΈπŸ’– Hello, Amazing Mums! We all know how much our SEN kids thrive on routine. It provides them with a sense of safety and predictability, which can significantly reduce anxiety and help them feel more in control. πŸ“†πŸ§© But did you know that routines can be incredibly beneficial for us mums too? Especially when it comes to self-care. Creating structured time for ourselves amidst the chaos can be a game changer. It's about putting on our own oxygen mask first, so we can better care for our children. βœˆοΈπŸ’• Here are a few examples of routines that can benefit both you and your teen: Morning Meditation: Start your day with a short meditation or mindfulness exercise. This can be done together with your teen or separately. It helps set a calm and focused tone for the day. πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈβ˜€οΈ Afternoon Walks: Incorporate a daily walk into your routine. It's a great way for both of you to get some fresh air, exercise, and a change of scenery. πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈπŸŒ³ Evening Wind-Down: Establish a consistent bedtime routine. This could include reading, listening to calming music, or doing some gentle stretching. It signals to both your bodies that it's time to relax and rest. πŸ›ŒπŸŒ™ Weekly Self-Care Time: Schedule a regular 'me-time' slot each week. This could be anything from a bubble bath to a yoga class or catching up on your favourite show. Make sure your teen has a structured activity during this time, too, so you can truly relax. πŸ›€πŸŽ¨ Remember, mums, routines aren't about rigidity. They're about creating a flexible structure that supports both your needs and those of your teen. So, feel free to adapt these suggestions to suit your unique situation. Let me know what routines you and your child have! 🌸🌈 Hello, Wonderful Mums! Today, let's talk about affirmations. These powerful statements can be a beacon of positivity and strength as we navigate the challenging journey of raising SEN kids. 🌟πŸ’ͺ Affirmations are more than just words – they're reminders that we are strong, capable, and doing an amazing job, even on the toughest days. Here are a few I recommend: "I am doing the best I can, and that is enough." "I am strong, resilient, and full of love." "I am not alone in my struggles." "I am grateful for the joys and challenges of being a mum." "I am deserving of self-care and self-love." Try writing these down and meditating on them morning and night. This practice can help you start and end your day with positivity and strength. πŸ“πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈ To remind yourself of these affirmations throughout the day, consider setting alarms on your phone with each affirmation as the alarm label or placing sticky notes in places you frequently visit around your home. You could even make them your screen saver! πŸ“±πŸ’« Remember, mums, an affirmation is most effective when you truly believe in it. So, pick the ones that resonate most with you, or create your own. I'm curious to know - have you ever used affirmations to maintain a positive outlook?
