We almost always assume that a child’s natural state is to be uncooperative and difficult and to get away with as much mischief and trouble as possible. Guess what? They’re doing the best they can. Children want to be good. We are hard-wired to seek out connection with a caregiver. If children aren’t being good, it’s because they can’t manage to be good in that moment. “They’re doing the best they can” makes staying patient easier and helps us find our empathy. We can more easily solve problems because we are on the same team as our child. When our children are behaving badly, we can use their behavior as a message to get to the root of the problem. Positivity and good-will grow in our families. Need some help? Instead of trying to protect teens/tweens, give them as much independence as possible- while also being prepared to be their safety net. This is the beginning of the transition to adulthood. How can you give your tween more independence? Can they walk to the store for you? Walk to school or take public transit on their own? Can they stay home alone and/or babysit for for siblings? Can you let them make more of their own decisions? Your child doesn’t need a perfect parent. They need you to show up and be present, physically with time spent together. They need you to show up and be present emotionally, when they’re happy or when they’re sad or mad. When you mess up or you’re not there or you try and fail to understand, they just need you to repair. “I’m sorry. I messed up. I love you. You don’t deserve to be yelled at.” They need you, with all your flaws, to keep showing up with intention to regulate yourself and show them that you’re there for them, no matter what. Need some help? Many of us experience burnout during intense seasons of parenting. When we are overwhelmed we can become focused on all of the things we DON’T want, like our children’s challenging behaviours or our massive to do lists. Seeing all of these problems can lead to hopelessness and feeling like nothing we do will ever make a difference. We can cultivate hope and start feeling better by considering what we want to move towards. Take baby steps!!! Set a SMALL goal that is measurable and attainable, such as: Clean your junk drawer Go for a walk Call a friend Smile at your child when they walk in the room Need some help? Peaceful Parenting is hard work. Focusing on connection and empathy, and using play and win/win solutions is IMPOSSIBLE if you are barely keeping your head above the water. I know we hear this all time, but we NEED to take care of ourselves. As parents we get compassion fatigue and burnout by continually putting the needs of others ahead of our own. Instead: Prioritize sleeping/rest Simplify- what can you take OFF your list? Put yourself ON the list! Don’t wait for others to notice what you need Befriend your inner mean girl and speak to yourself with compassion [ID: 1. image of a mother helping get a baby into a carrier on the father's chest with the quote “We can’t create more time, but we can do less, delegate, or ask for help.” - Nedra Glover Tawwab author of Set Boundaries, Find Peace: A Guide to Reclaiming Yourself @nedratawwab White logo on bottom Sarah Rosensweet peaceful parenting]⠀⠀ #emotionalintelligence #peacefulparenting #sarahrosensweet #peacefulparentingwin #gentleparenting #positiveparenting #conciousparenting #parentingproblems #parentingtalk #honestparenting #emotionalparenting #parentinglife #patientparenting #parentingskills #parentingstruggles #parentingstyles #parentingstrategies #empathy #honestmomming #motherhood #mommymatters #dadlife #momlife #thrivingmom #momonfire #raisinglittles

As some of you might know, Corey is one of the coaches who works for me. We first met when she hired me as her parenting coach quite a few years ago! Corey needed help with her child who had a lot of meltdowns- often in public places. Corey described to me the judgmental looks strangers would give her and the harsh comments people had made. And whenever this happened she became dysregulated too. She felt so much shame - often abandoning grocery carts or quickly running home from the park, with a baby strapped to her back and her preschooler kicking and screaming in her arms. One of the big things I worked on with Corey was helping her to find more confidence in those moments. She needed to remind herself that she could handle whatever was happening. She needed to actively tune out the other adults in the room and focus her energy on soothing her child AND and herself. It wasn’t a magic bullet. It took a lot of time and practice. But through doing this over and over again, she gained the confidence she needed to be the anchor in the storm her child needed. The thing that really helped her was when she asked herself who really deserved her loyalty- her child or the adults at the grocery store or the park? Whose opinion did she care more about? Who was more important to her at the end of the day? That gave her the courage to do what she needed to do to help her child rather than doing what others thought she SHOULD do. And as y’all know, she now helps other parents gain this confidence as well. Need some help? 7 Tips to Deal with Extended Family Challenges 1. Remember that everyone is doing the best they can. Your in-laws love your kids, but they don't know how to get them to listen without yelling. That’s how they were raised and how they raised your partner. Take a deep breath and remind yourself that they are doing the best they can. You will find that if you give other people as much compassion as you can muster, you will feel better and have more strength and energy to deal with the situation. 2. Manage Yourself. You can only control yourself. Most of the time we are trying to change a situation by trying to change the other person! (It never works!) But if you make a change, the relationship will change. The first step is to learn to not act when you are upset. STOP-DROP-and-BREATHE. 3. Focus on connection. What do you like about the challenging person in your family? We often spend most of our time thinking about the negatives. But if we focus on the positives, we will have an easier time. Make a list if it helps! “What you focus on grows.” 4. Put kind, firm limits in place. We are in charge of taking care of ourselves and our children. That means setting healthy boundaries and standing up for ourselves and our children. If the environment is feeling too stressful, take a break. Give yourself and your children a time-in. Put on your invisible forcefield! Surround yourself with light, love, energy and know that you are safe. Take some time to process all the difficult feelings that this person might bring up in you. 5. Do some preventive maintenance. A parent in my community talked about the ‘culture shock’ that can happen when we are all together for the holidays. Small children can be hard when you're used to a quieter lifestyle. Try taking the kids out of the house, or to another part of the house if possible to give everyone breaks. You can also feed the kids early and put on a movie so that you can have an ‘adults only’ meal. Continued in comments...

What do YOU need to do for yourself to make the next few weeks relaxed and enjoyable? Take a break. You deserve to rest without having done everything already. Cross something off your 'to do' list- without having done it! Say yes to what's meaningful. What brings you the most meaning and joy in the holidays? Say no to everything else. A simple, "Thank you, but that won't work for us" is enough. Make room for big feelings- yours and the kids' Delegate. Accept help. Ask for help. Do all three. Really! Need some help? 8 Tips to Raise Kids Who Aren't Greedy 1. Try to stem the flow of gifts. You can give gifts of an experience instead of material goods and encourage extended family to do the same. Encourage family to give gifts like museum outings, or show tickets. Time spent together is so valuable. 2. Dial it down. If family or friends insist on buying something, insist on a one gift policy if you can. 3. Be gracious. Model appreciation by being gracious when your children are given gifts, even if it is over the top. I know a few grandparents who show their love with presents. Remember the spirit in which the gift is given. Even if you think it’s too much, you don’t need to crush your child’s or the gift giver’s joy. 4. Encourage giving. If you want the holidays to mean more than ‘getting,’ help your kids give presents. Give presents to siblings, teachers, neighbours or grandparents. Kids love thinking about what someone else would enjoy when they are given the chance. They can make presents or use a small amount of their own money if possible to buy something. Continued in comments...

7 Tips to Beat Holiday Stress in Your Family 1.Prioritize what’s important We are bombarded with images of holiday magic, and we get so many invitations to gatherings and holiday events. What things mean most to you? Choose a few things and fully enjoy them. If it’s not a big YES! It is no, thank you. What can you cross off your to-do list? 2. Manage Yourself Managing yourself is two parts: taking care of yourself and taking responsibility for your feelings. Even if you are pretty good at taking care of yourself, there will inevitably be times that you are frustrated, stressed or upset. Just try not to act when you are upset. Take a minute to calm down before you lose it. Remind yourself that it’s not an emergency. Stop-Drop-Breathe. 3. Recognize that your child is doing the best they can Children want to be good. They want to do the right thing. If your child could do better they would do better. If you can remember that they’re not giving you a hard time, they’re having a hard time, you will be able to respond with a lot more emotional generosity and empathy. 4. Lower your expectations. We often struggle because of the gap between what our children “should” be doing and what they are actually doing. Let go of the “shoulds.” They are acting like kids because they are kids- and at this time of year, their resources are lower due to more activity and disrupted routines, lots of excitement, less sleep and more sugar! 5. Unpack the big feelings. When we have a lot of big feelings we can’t process in the moment, we hold them in our bodies (our emotional backpack.) Empathize with your child and help them cry. Your child needs you to acknowledge and empathize with their feelings before they can calm down. If you can help your child process all the big feelings they will be more cooperative and less prone to meltdowns. Continued in comments...

If you need motivation to continue on your peaceful parenting journey, or information to share with skeptic family members this holiday season- here is the science behind it. Science journalist Melinda Wenner Moyer explains: "Research overwhelmingly suggests that what parents should strive for is a middle ground, “goldilocks” approach known as authoritative parenting [the official name for peaceful parenting]. These parents have high expectations of their kids and set strict limits, but they are also warm and respectful with their children and sometimes willing to negotiate. Research shows that children of authoritative parents perform better in school than their peers, are more honest with their parents and are also kind and compassionate." Authoritative parenting (peaceful parenting) is the science-backed way to raise healthy, happy, successful and independent humans! Need more help? We always teach parents to focus on soothing and offering empathy when their child is having a meltdown or being aggressive. This is a really hard concept for parents to wrap their heads around. Parents worry we are asking them to “do nothing” or encouraging them to “be permissive”. And I get it. It can LOOK like parents are doing nothing during these hard moments. But parents who can stay calm in the face of their child’s storms, are actually doing very important work based on brain science and child development. When children are dysregulated they need OUR nervous system to be calm in order for THEIR nervous system to calm down. This is called process is called “co-regulation”. By being a calm, empathic presence (and definitely not letting a child hurt us- that is where kind, firm limits come in) we are actually wiring their brains to be able to eventually self- regulate. Need some help? “They should listen to me when I tell them it’s time to leave the park!” “They should hang up their coats and backpacks when we come in the door!” “They should know by this age that hitting is not okay!” When we have a gap between the expectations we have for our child and the reality of what they are doing, it can be extremely frustrating! It’s often when we lose patience. The first step? What does it look like to ‘join them in their world when they’re little’? Do Special Time. If you can swing it, 15 minutes a day with each child-- “I’m all yours for the next 15 minutes. What would you like to play?” Play. If you can’t swing Special Time with each child, try to play with all your kids for 15 minutes a day. Get them laughing! Kids against you in a monster-chase game. Be curious. Not into playing? I know it can be tough! Get curious and ask questions about what your child is playing and show as much interest as you can about them and what they’re into. Be present. Try to have time every day when you aren’t distracted by your phone and your to-do list. Listen. It can be hard to pay attention to a rambling story from a 4 year old (or a 14 year old!) Try at least a few times a day to be an active listener to your child. Share space. Even if you aren’t doing anything together, we were in the same space. Put a little art table in your kitchen, catch up on work on your laptop while your kids play. ⠀ [ID: 1. one adult is on either side of the child, holding their hands and walking in the rain. If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ve heard my back to school pep talk because it is literally the same every year.  Here it is.   Here’s the thing:  People are so cool.  The more people you know, the more you’ll realize this.  The more you realize this, you’ll realize that you are cool too.    The more you realize you are cool too, the more courage you’ll have to reach outside of yourself to share and develop your talents and to make more friends.    The more other people realize that you think they are cool, the more they will realize that they are cool and will also reach outside of themselves to share and develop their talents.    So make friends.     MAKE NEW FRIENDS:   1.    Smile.  At everyone.  2.    Say hi to even acquaintances in the hall and at recess. 3.    Be curious about EVERYONE. 4.    Ask a new person their name and connect it with something you like about them.   CONNECT WITH OLD FRIENDS: There will be lots of people at school who you know who they are and they know who you are—maybe a friend who you haven’t hung out with in a while.  Go out of your way to smile and say hi to this person.  Let them know that you don’t have to be close to be friends.  Don’t pretend not to know people who you clearly know.    LOOK TO INCLUDE:   1.    If you are asked to get in partners, don’t choose your best friend.  Find someone who is panicked because they don’t know who will be their partner. 2.    Find the new kids and invite them to sit with you at lunch and hang out at recess.  You might find a new close friend and if not, they will find their people and will be thankful to you for helping them feel like they belonged on the first day. 3.    Show your friends how to be inclusive.  They might make a deal out of it that you are hanging out with someone who doesn’t fit the mold.  Let ‘em jump around.   My lectures can go on and on and on.  This one might.  Every year is a big opportunity for growth, and in my experience, people are the catalyst for most of it.    #momonfire

Despite what we have been taught by conventional parenting, we cannot control our children. We CAN create a strong enough relationship with our children, so that we can have a positive influence on them. Your child might not want to rake the yard, but they value being part of the family team, so they're willing to pitch in and help. They may not want to brush their teeth, but they're really looking forward to snuggling up to spend time with you, so they come and brush their teeth. ⠀ As they become teenagers, we don't want their biggest influence to be their peers. If we maintain a strong relationship with our teens we will have a better chance of continuing to influence their values and decisions. What to learn how to to move from controlling to connecting with your kids? My Transform Your Family Life Course is now open for enrollment! Link in bio to learn more 😘 ⠀ [ID: 1. a photo of a mother and her daughter outside holding hands and moving in a circle. This morning, after bidding my hubby off to work, I proceeded to pray and fellowship with God to kickstart my day. The boys were still fast asleep (it was 5.30am and we're on holidays) so I was in for a good time for the next two hours (or so I thought). I don't think I had prayed for ten minutes when I heard someone crying, "Mummy...tea, tea, I want tea." It was David! "Oh, God, this boy is awake already?" "You want tea? Okay, let's go and get it." I got up grudgingly to the kitchen, unhappy that my sweet prayer time had been interrupted by mummy duties, yet again! I made the tea and was about resuming my Tongues Spree when "you know who" also woke up and walked sleepily into the living room. "Ah, Nathan too? Lobatan o!"😅 I was just going to give up the praying all together when it occured to me that my children shouldn't be an excuse for me not to pray. Instead, THEY ARE THE REASON WHY I SHOULD! You see, I'm a better Mom when I've prayed and spent time in God's presence. Especially this holiday season that I need the fruit of the Spirit called PATIENCE like never before!😇 (I know my fellow mummies understand). So I just simply picked up David, who was crying to be carried after taking his tea and held Nathan's hands and together we all walked around the parlour as I continued praying in the Spirit.🙂 Mommy got to fellowship with God, the boys got to see what talking to Jesus looks like (which, by the way is great for their spiritual development) and mommy received the grace she needed to be the best mom to them for the day! I consider that a major win-win situation, don't you?🙂 So next time you feel like the kids are intruding, rather than quit, involve them in your prayers. It's good for you and them! Remember, your children are not your excuse for not praying, THEY ARE THE REASON YOU SHOULD!!! P.S: David even started mimicking my tongues at a point.😅 Can't wait to get him filled with the Holy Ghost when he's older! #IntimacywithGodforMoms #MomOnFire #IntimacyTipsWithDedayoGbolagun

Set a SMALL goal that is measurable and attainable, such as: - Clean your junk drawer - Go for a walk - Call a friend - Smile at your child when they walk in the room Need some help? Those of us that have to be intentional about parenting usually have to do so because we have intense kids. Kids who are a little bit "more" or "extra." More spirited, more strong-willed, more sensitive or more anxious. Or a combination of these things! Peaceful parenting DOES help children learn to regulate their emotions and want to work with us. And it definitely makes life with these more challenging kids easier. But the thing is--- our kids will always be "more." There will always be hard days and challenges. What makes it all work out okay- and even great- is when we can show up with calm and compassion for our intense kids. We can deal with the situations without damaging them or our relationship with a tantrum of our own. That's the gift of peaceful parenting. Need some help? Anxiety is something that is often unintentionally passed down from generation to generation in families. It is such a common problem that I have had anxiety expert Lynn Lyons on my podcast 3 times! (link in bio to listen!) Our brains are always trying to predict what is going to happen next so that we have the resources to handle whatever comes our way. When it predicts a threat, it kicks our body and our mind into high gear with the Fight, Flight or Freeze response. As Lynn explains “Anxiety is an overestimation of the problem and an underestimation of your resources to handle it.” The good news is we can teach our brains (and our kids' brains too!) to make better predictions! This is done by expecting anxious thoughts to come up, and then practicing telling yourself whatever is happening you CAN handle it. Need more help with this? When your child is having a hard time, you know that being hard on them doesn’t help. Just like you respond to your child with compassion when they mess up, give yourself some love when you mess up. Beating yourself up will actually make you act worse. Feeling bad = Acting bad. Say to yourself, “I am worthy and loveable even though I messed up.” You can learn from your mistakes and try to do better next time much more easily when you’re not stuck in a shame cycle. Talk to yourself like your inner best friend, not your inner mean girl. Need more help? What is the best advice you have been given? 🗣 "If it was easy, everyone would do it" I found myself right in the middle of a tornado of chaos. I was working full time, working at the hospital part time for additional income, full time mom, managing the household, and going to school full time. Eventually, the chaos finally pushed me to a breaking point. I had decided completing school was the least of my priorities. Ready to throw in the towel, my professor reminded me that if completing your doctorate degree was easy, everyone would do it. It was her words that reminded me that with perseverance, you will prevail. #doctoratedegree #nurseleader #momonfire #preseverance #InspireChange

Need more help? In conventional parenting there is a common belief that you should just “ignore” any of your children’s behaviour that you don’t like. This dismisses the fact that children are hardwired for connection with their caregivers- if they are acting out of alignment with that, then something is wrong. Ignoring misbehavior, means missing a chance to get to the root of what is distressing your child. And it teaches your child to either ignore their own feelings and needs, or to escalate their behaviour in order to be heard. Need more help? When you see your child first thing in the morning, when they come in the room, when they come to dinner- WHENEVER- look them and give them a smile. ⠀ ⠀ You can say, “I’m glad to see you.” Or, “I love you.” Or, “I’m so lucky you’re my kid.” ⠀ ⠀ Or, say nothing and just smile! ⠀ ⠀ It may be the most important thing that you can do as a parent 💗 Need more help?
