Saw Sweeney Todd with the most amazing cast, a gianormous crystal at the Museum of Natural History, the MET, the Museum of Broadway (which no, doesn’t have the Wicked costumes if you’re wondering 😮💨), THE ARCONIA from Only Murders in the Building which we actually saw setting up to film earlier this week (did not see Selener, tho I did keep an eye out), Central Park and (not pictured) the Intrepid Museum today. I had a lot of leftover tulle from my wedding dress and didn't have a practical use for it, so I made the most impractical thing possible. This is the Violent Delights Robe from @gunnardeatherage. I realized I don't have any nice lougewear to go with it, so I also made a black slip. Bonus pic at the end of Austin teaching me how to pose. Project Notes: This is the Soft Tulle from @moodfabrics, it's so soft and flowy. Feather trim was out of my budget for this project, so I bought faux fur trim from @shop.jemme on Etsy. The trim arrived kind of matted, but after a wash and dry, it's now smooth and fluffy. The robe pattern is pretty straightforward and really flexible. I used a size 10 for the waistband and a size 2 everywhere else, which was easy to modify since everything is gathered at the waist. I also shortened the bodice and sleeves by 1" and the lower tiers by 3" each, and it came out just the right length. To clean up the finishes on the inside, I used two yoke pieces with the burrito method, and added a second waistband on the inside that I hand-sewed down at the bottom. The fur trim was by far the longest part of this. I sewed the outside edge down by machine and then hand-sewed the inside edge. A lot of hand-sewing in front of the TV, but the result is gorgeous. The slip is the Simone Slip from @closetcorepatterns. I did a size 4 for the bust and graded to a size 6 at the hips, and the fit is perfect. I usually need to shorten Closet Core Patterns, so I took out 1", but it ended up a bit short. I'd probably add 1" back in if I make it again. And now the dress itself! It took me a while to get started because I was scared to cut into the nicest fabric I've ever bought. But I'm so proud of the result. Project Notes: The pattern is the Oleander Dress by @gunnardeatherage. I've been obsessed with this dress since I first discovered Gunnar's patterns and, I loved the color combo from his sample of the design. I made a test version in metallic satin from @moodfabrics (bonus pic at the end) and realized that while it looked good while standing up, the bodice was a bit saggy while sitting down. Even after a lot of toiles, I couldn't find a way to prevent potential wardrobe malfunctions, so I used my tried and true, the Magnolia Dress from @deer_and_doe_patterns for the bodice. I also added a third tier of tulle to the base and significantly hemmed it. The final fabrics are also from Mood (Soft Tulle and Premium Silk Charmeuse). They were out of the tulle color I wanted, so I got a lighter color than I planned, but I really like the depth it adds to the bottom tier. Doing a curved hem with a slippery fabric was a nightmare, and it's very messy, but it's hidden under the tulle layers so you can't really tell. I also added a last-minute pocket on the inside to hold a handkerchief that has been passed down from my grandmother to my mother to me. Super Disney weekend wrap up post, part 1! In addition to running a race, I attended my first Dapper Day! Been wanting to go for years and it finally worked out. On the first day I rocked my loosely Pongo inspired look around Epcot. It's the @sewoveritlondon Betty dress made with a wonderful lawn from @moodfabrics that I desperately wish they still sold. We stayed in a Royal room at Port Orleans which was super fun! I only grabbed a photo of the headboard but the room had so many cute touches like the Aladdin lamp faucets! So I did another thing! I decided to make an outfit to wear to a Sewing Guild brunch then volunteered to be in their Fashion Show. It's tomorrow! What was I thinking?! Oh well, I hope I don't trip and fall. 😂🙄 Here's a sneak peak of what I will wear. 🤫 Finding the fabric to match the skirt pattern I had in mind was a journey. I decided to use a border print panel for the pleated skirt. It turned out I needed more fabric panels as the skirt pieces were longer than the print of one panel. If I shortened it, it would have turned out to be a mini-skirt. 😂😜 As I was finishing the skirt, I needed hooks to sew in the waistband. I was going to "borrow" one from one of my existing skirts then found in my sewing supply drawers a box. There are 144 hooks...going to make a lot of skirts! 😂 The fabric is a stretch cotton sateen from @moodfabrics It is a dream to work with. It has a subtle sheen and is so easy to sew. The pattern I used is Burda 6342, only two pieces! The sweater is my fifth #Ranunculussweater. It was knitted with two strands of yarn together @missbabsyarns Estrellita in Blarney Stone and @dererumnatura Berenice Mohair in Oursin from @fibrespace The hat I got from Charleston was embellished with a handmade wool flower brooch that I got from New Orleans and the crystal button was from NYC. Much progress has been made this weekend on my #atlantafrocktails dress and frankly I’m shocked that I’m not going to be scrambling at the eleventh hour to finish it in time. 😂 I still need to make and attach the skirt lining, put in the buttonholes and buttons, and then draft some detachable off the shoulder sleeve flounces. (Is sleeve flounces the right technical term?) This is a mashup of Cashmerette’s Holyoke top and the Upton pleated skirt. The biggest hurdle for me was getting the fit of the princess seams right. I had to grade between three sizes and do a lot of hand basting. This is also my first time doing a full lining and I’m in love with how pretty the inside is looking and the silky hand of the bemberg rayon.
