#Finds A multicoloured marvel of imitation This is a Roman-period plate brooch, complete save only for its missing pin. It was cast in copper alloy and then decorated with coloured enamel of blue and orange tints, being refired to fuse the colours in place. A brooch like this is called umbonate, because it resembles a shield with an umbo or projecting central boss. The umbonate form was common among brooches imported from outside the Empire, especially from Free Germany – where Romans feared to tread after three legions were trashed in the running battle of Teutoburger Wald (AD 9). A range of eccentric brooch styles are recognised as German, and they include shield-like shapes - and others too. The fact that they are found here at all shows contact between Britons and those outside the Empire. Two methods of enamelling seem to have been used. The rounded orange-looking cells at the outer edge may have been filled with powdered glass which melted and flowed to fill them… Varied techniques may have resulted in the differential preservation of the enamels. All would contrast with the yellow tint of the metal when the brooch was new. A British-made brooch was more likely to have a sprung pin rather than a less technically demanding hinged pin. In this case, either type of fastening may have been used – and lost. We’ve recorded nearly 70 Roman plate brooches at North Lincolnshire Museum (or NLM), but this is the most spectacular and best-preserved, and the only one of its specific type on our books. The find-spot – in the same parish as an important Roman villa or estate centre and perhaps near its burial ground – may hint at a reason for this splendid brooch being found here, rather than anywhere else. C'est GENIAL et GRATUIT. Dimanche dernier, pour la deuxième fois, je me rendais au @louvrelens . Si vous n'êtes jamais allé, je vous explique un peu comment ça fonctionne. "La galerie du temps", c'est un vaste espace moderne et épurée où se trouve l'exposition permanente et gratuite du musée. Une ligne du temps nous fait avancer chronologiquement dans 5000 ans d'histoire. Chaque œuvres, est munie d'un petit descriptif court et précis, mais je vous conseil vraiment, si vous en avez l'occasion, de suivre une visite guidée. Dimanche, chance, c'était une journée particulière sur le multisensoriel. On invitait, par différents atelier, à découvrir les œuvres avec les cinq sens (à l'occasion de la journée mondiale de la mobilité et de l'accessibilité). On a pu tester d'abord l'expérience de réalité virtuelle sur les mondes fantastiques avec un petit film de 15min très sympa sur la légende de Beowulf entre autre. Ensuite, on a fait un atelier destiné de base aux personnes ayant une cécité, mais ouvert à tous. C'était un genre d'audio description, avec des élément à respirer, toucher, écouter... Pour ensuite dessiner l'œuvre décrite. Dans notre petit groupe de 7, on avait deux enfants sourd/autiste, qui on pu vivre aussi l'expérience grâce à l'interprète en langue des signes présente. Ensuite, on est allé voir l'œuvre en question dans la partie d'expo temporaire (payante) sur le thème des mondes souterrains. L'occasion de faire un petit tour de l'expo avec les deux supers animatrices de l'atelier, Alix et Audrey, qui nous ont partagées plein d'info passionnante sur les œuvres (je me permet d'insister car elles ont été vraiment super et passionnante). Avant de partir, petit tour à la boutique, qui est vraiment cool, pour ramener un souvenir à Jules. Bref on est resté 6 heures, on a du partir parce que ça fermait, mais on aurait encore bien fait plein d'ateliers. A delightful blend of history and appreciation unfolded as Arkansas Heritage Director Marty Ryall journeyed to the charming city of Fort Smith. In a ceremonious moment, Director Ryall presented a Small Museum Grant to the guardians of history at the Fort Smith Heritage Foundation. Ihre Haltung suggeriert ein stilles Suchen, versinnbildlicht durch einen roten Seh- oder Gedankenstrahl, der Kopf und Boden miteinander verbindet. Dieser Strahl setzt sich im Inneren des Gebäudes nach unten fort. I seriously can't get over how incredible the MESDA "Layered Legacies" exhibition is. I'm still gobsmacked. I'm sitting on my front porch (got home late last night) just reminiscing about these quilts. Thank you to all who made this exhibition possible! 🙌 Curators Lea Lane (MESDA), Lauren Applebaum (NCMA), and Jenny Garwood (MESDA). The NCMA handled all of the design and fabrication elements with such skill. MESDA partnered with the NCMA to provide their scholarship and collections. 👉 Exhibition runs through July 28 at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh. . I'm doing some video editing today because I have a TON of footage to show you from my FOUR superb museum visits this week. Weighing an impressive 1,200 lbs, the work is a testament to Kaneko’s technical prowess in creating large-scale sculptures. The most recent addition to our Plaza, ‘Talking Earth’ by Tekaronhiáhkhwa / Santee Smith (@santeesmith), is an etched ceramic sculpture inspired by a Rotinohnsyonni four-cornered earthen pottery vessel. Featured on this very worn M&G copper Roman Follis Coin from A.D. 161–180 is the likeness of Emperor Marcus Aurelius who was born #OnThisDay in the year 121. The front shows the head of Marcus Aurelius as Augustus wearing the laurel crown with a partial inscription of his name. On the reverse, Concordia is seated to the left holding a patera (a vessel used in sacrifice) while a cornucopia lies under her seat. Marcus Aurelius was the last of the five good emperors and known as the one of the best Roman emperors in history. He is also considered one of the most important Stoic philosophers for his personal work, Meditations. Music in Art: Accompanying a Ceremony St. Francis Altarpiece | Oil on panel, c. 1514 Niccolò Pisano | Ferrarese, 1470–after 1536 This large altarpiece is an excellent example of High Renaissance art: the design is balanced and symmetrical, the human figures are idealized, and the painting is saturated with brilliant color. The subject of the painting—Christ handing the keys of the heavenly kingdom to Mary, who in turn gives them to a kneeling St. Francis—is unprecedented in Italian art. In most paintings, Peter the Apostle receives the keys. However, this work is focused primarily on Franciscan monks. Notice Pisano’s carefully ordered placement of the figures, which include every canonized saint of the painting’s time period and who are all linked to the Franciscans. Mary is the special patron of St. Francis and his followers. On the right side are Louis of Toulouse (back), Bonaventura (front) and on the left are Anthony of Padua (back) and Bernardino (front). The church or organization that originally commissioned this work most likely chose the unusual subject to honor the Franciscans. While in Savannah, I toured the legendary Mercer Williams House! This is the house that inspired the book, and Clint Eastwood film, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (and where they filmed most of that movie). Other films that shot there include Glory, Wes Craven’s Swamp Thing, and The Return of Swamp Thing. I also got to see the iconic Bird Girl sculpture (shown in the last three pics), which was featured on the cover of the Midnight in the… book and in the movie. "Complication relating to service in Vietnam" When people think of the victims of war, they often think of the damage done in battle. The wounds and deaths caused by mortars, mines and guns. But more often than not, the biggest killer on the battlefield is disease, both physical and mental. Arthur John Gibson was born on 9 August 1944 in the town of Taree, NSW, the son of Herbert and Annie Gibson. As a young man he moved to Bankstown, where he married in 1966 and had his first child 2 years later. Arthur joined the Australian Army and moved his young family to Holsworthy soldiers' settlement. On 18 February 1970, Arthur arrived in South Vietnam with the 7th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment. There he carried out his duties which included patrols, ambushes and search and destroy missions through the jungle. In total, Arthur spent just under a year in Vietnam and was flown home on 14 January 1971 at the end of his tour. By July 1972, Gibson was lying in a bed in Liverpool Hospital, suffering from "complications" related to his service in the Vietnam War. It is not clear what these complications were, but they consumed Gibson and eventually took his life. He was buried in the grounds of Liverpool General Cemetery with a full military funeral. Die Position der Querleiste auf der Skala des Stabs zeigte nun den Winkel an.
