Airheads (1994, Dir. Michael Lehmann). This movie rules so hard. It’s the best Adam Sandler movie by a wide margin, it’s my favorite Buscemi role, it’s one the best 90’s soundtracks, and it’s directed by the dude who gave us Heathers! It tanked hard when it was released, but luckily developed a cult following once people realized how incredible it was. As soon as my middle school self saw a TV spot for it for the first time I knew I needed to see it immediately and I was not disappointed. Every time I watch it I love it even more and as far as I’m concerned The Lone Rangers are a top 5 fake band of all time. “I just wanted to take another look at you.“ Now showing #AStarIsBorn! Not sure why I avoided it upon it’s initial release, but I certainly understand the hype now! I found it to be a mixed bag, but one where the highs are really high. #BradleyCooper’s direction is damn good - he’s borrowing a lot from other filmmakers, but he crafts a really dynamic movie that just sucks you right in from the get-go. Cooper and #LadyGaga’s lead performances are also really nuanced. I love little moments like people going “huh?” in a loud room multiple times. When the movie is firing on all cylinders it feels absolutely genuine - scenes like in the parking lot I legitimately forgot I was watching a movie. Their chemistry is stellar. Then there are moments that dip into more theatrical melodrama and that’s where it can be kinda hit-or-miss. Maestro had similar problems as well. But then we get something like the “Shallow” performance that easily has to be one of the most enjoyable scenes of the 2010s. Or the “I’m sorry” scene between Cooper and #SamElliott - dudes, especially brothers, having trouble communicating will always get to me. Totally not ashamed to admit I teared up multiple times during this. At the very least, it blows the doors off the 70’s version. I really should check out the Judy Garland one, too. Despite the last half of this being pretty brutal, I can definately see myself giving this a rewatch every few years.
