“Why don’t we go lay on the bed and I’ll fill you in?” Now showing #Fletch! I’ve gotta admit: I was a little disappointed in this. I always heard it was one of the best comedies of the 80s and I only really found myself laughing out loud a few times. It’s not a total failure by any means and it certainly is quotable... but it’s all just gags. Boy Kills World is like if the Raid had slapstick humour peppered throughout and it absolutely rules! The narration and humour definitely won't be for everyone, there are parts where the comedy doesn't land but I'll be honest, I really dug how off the wall this is. This movie doesn't take itself seriously at all, at least until the final twenty minutes. The action is what most people will pay for and it really doesn't disappoint. As if you'd expect anything less from Raid alumni Yahan Ruhian. It's quite simply a violent, gory treat throughout. The final fight is probably going to be one of the best you'll see this year as well. Bill Skarsgard got ripped for this role and he's impressive as a mute warrior living in the jungle out for revenge on a rich family who murdered his mother, almost like an R rated dark version of Tarzan. The rest of the cast aren't slouches either, Jessica Rothe is great even if they spend too much time hiding her face whilst Michelle Dockery, Brett Gelman and Famke Janssen all play the Van Der Koy as deranged as you'd hope them to. Andrew Koji also threatens to steal the show as an unhinged sidekick to Skarsgard. The first three acts of this all plays into this quirky, off the wall, fun revenge quest before what I believe to be an excellent plot twist in the final act. From then on the humour is stripped away and we get a dramatic, violent conclusion to the story. I loved this movie, perhaps more than most will but genre fans will certainly not be disappointed by the constant action scenes throughout the runtime. I'll be watching Boy Kills World several more times as soon as I can get hold of a physical copy. Submitted for your perusal today, we’ve got this near complete filmography of the one and only Greek cinematic sensation Yorgos Lanthimos. With his most recent masterpiece Poor Things securing a handful of Academy wins, and surprisingly, a brand new anthology feature film already due for release later this year, it seemed a perfect time to revisit one or two of these fascinating films. This once niche filmmaker is really on a roll right now. I am beyond stoked to see this dude get his due. There are so many things to be said about this truly unique filmmaker. His incredibly specific, offbeat, blackly comic and at times genuinely disturbing tendencies are present in and actually permeate almost every element of his film process. From his shoestring debut, through mid range and eventual big studio projects, he has yet to compromise his singular nature, I am absolutely with it 100%. There are some franchises that just keep on keeping on, as long as the dollars continue to flow. With Paul W.S. Anderson’s films, they did just that. The first entry in the six film original continuity is a solid adaptation of the basic skeleton plot of the games, and it worked a heck of a lot more than I expected it to. The rest of the films vary in quality from decent, just okay, all the way to full fledged dumbfounding dumpster fires. All in all… it’s not a bad action horror franchise, it’s just not… Resident Evil. And then there is the recent reboot of the film franchise, Welcome to Raccoon City. I was so ridiculously hyped for that movie prior to release, and have to say I was somewhat disappointed on the first view. I didn’t love the way several characters were portrayed, and it made it hard to focus on the things they did right. Jill Valentine was particularly egregious in that department. What’s both awesome and fascinating is that my second viewing hit completely different. Devoid of expectations and knowing what was to come… I have to say it is now my favorite Resident Evil flick. The set design, faithfulness to the source material, overall atmosphere and significantly increased horror elements, all contribute to a massive change of heart on repeat viewings. I decided not to include the animated films in this post, but all of them are pretty excellent. So what about you? What’s your favorite Resident Evil film? *We don’t talk about the Netflix series.
