IDAHAN Primarily living in the Lahad Datu district of Sabah, the Idahan or Ida'an people are known for their knowledge in harvesting birds' nests. Birds nest is a delicacy made out of the nest of a specific bird and is known for its rejuvenating properties. The harvesting of these nests can be found in a sacred cave, the Madai Cave. Fun Fact: Most Idahan have embraced Islam and no longer prepare procession rituals such as yellow rice, white hen and a ceramic vase to appease their ancestors' spirits in the Madai Cave. Orang Idahan atau Ida'an menetap di sekitar daerah Lahad Datu, Sabah dan terkenal dengan kemahiran mereka dalam proses menuai sarang burung. Selama beberapa abad, mereka memiliki hak esklusif bagi mengumpulkan sarang burung layang-layang di dalam gua batu kapur kawasan tersebut, terutamanya Gua Madai. They cultivate plants such as sago palms, wet rice and rubber as a source of their income. They value education and many Melanau have succeeded in fields such as politics, business and public life. Fun Fact: When someone dies, the personal belongings are buried together with the body. Orang Melanau boleh ditemui dari Bintulu sehingga ke Kanowit, Sarawak. Kebanyakan orang Melanau adalah petani, nelayan atau peniaga. Mereka mengusahakan tanaman seperti pokok sagu, padi basah dan getah sebagai sumber pendapatan mereka. TIDONG/TIDUNG Tidong is a Malay subgroup that can be found in the southeastern part of Sabah, which is around Tawau and Sebatik districts. Most of the time if you are in Tawau town, one cannot differentiate between a Malay and a Tidong, as many have assimilated with the Malay and its other subgroup. They speak, dress, eat, and even dance the same. However, Tidongs in Sebatik, Kalabakan, Inderasabah and Membalua still speak their native language and practise their native culture. Fun Fact: The town's name, Tawau, itself is derived from a Tidung word 'Tawai' which means 'hook'. Orang Tidong merupakan subkumpulan Melayu yang boleh ditemui di bahagian tenggara Sabah iaitu sekitar daerah Tawau dan Sebatik. Selalunya jika anda berada di bandar Tawau, susah untuk membezakan antara Melayu dan Tidong, kerana ramai orang Tidong telah berasimilasi dengan orang Melayu dan subkumpulan yang lain. Heritage is something to celebrate!!! Today our high school students will perform and celebrate their cultures in front of the school. It is my favorite assembly of the year. I can’t wait to see the dancing, traditional attire and witness the bravery of students putting themselves out there! They have been practicing for weeks. If you follow me, you’ll know I’m a proud American 🇺🇸 with Scottish roots. 🏴 Typical of many people in this country, I also have Irish, German and Basque heritage as well. My middle name is Raphaela for my maternal grandfather who was Basque. My name Shannon is the largest river in Ireland 🇮🇪 to honor my maternal grandmother. My great-grandparents emigrated from the Isle of Skye and a cousin still lives in the house of my great-grandfather Alexander MacKinnon. Like Canada, Australia, New Zealand and other places—so many of us come from land far away from our birthplace. The desire to go back *home* is felt by so many of us! PENAN The Penan people are nomadic hunters that can be found in the interiors of the rainforests in Sarawak. The name 'Penan' is derived from the word 'Punan' meaning to collect or to assemble things. The current day livelihoods of the Penan have been disrupted due to the logging of the rainforests. The Penan have relied heavily on nature, as it is their source of food, medicine and materials such as rattan palms to make their mats and baskets. Fun Fact: Some Penan greet each other by touching fingers and then touching their hair. Orang Penan merupakan pemburu nomad yang boleh ditemui di kawasan pedalaman hutan hujan di Sarawak. Nama 'Penan' berasal daripada perkataan 'Punan' yang bermaksud mengumpulkan atau memasang sesuatu. Mata pencarian orang Penan sekarang telah terganggu akibat pembalakan berleluasa. BIDAYUH The name Bidayuh comes from the Dayak language which means 'Inhabitants of the Land'. Similar to Iban people, the Bidayuh are also part of the Dayak tribe, but the only difference is that the Ibans are sea dayaks while the Bidayuh are land dayaks. The Bidayuh mainly live in the basin of the Sarawak River and in the mountainous forests, which are ideal places for some agriculture. Fun Fact: There are at least 25 Bidayuh dialects. Dalam bahasa Bidayuh, 'Bi' bermaksud 'orang' dan 'Dayuh' bermaksud 'Darat'. Sama seperti orang Iban, orang Bidayuh juga merupakan sebahagian daripada suku Dayak, tetapi satu-satunya perbezaan ialah orang Iban adalah dayak laut manakala Bidayuh adalah dayak darat. Orang Bidayuh kebanyakannya tinggal di muara-muara Sungai Sarawak dan di hutan pergunungan; yang juga merupakan tempat yang sesuai untuk pertanian. MY Cultur-ED recently had the pleasure of working with Handcross Park School and 58 of the teaching staff focusing on unconscious bias and microagressions. Unconscious biases are social stereotypes about certain groups of people that individuals form outside their own conscious awareness. Everyone holds unconscious beliefs about various social and identity groups, and these biases stem from one's tendency to organize social worlds by categorizing. Microaggression is a term used for commonplace verbal, behavioural, or environmental slights, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative attitudes toward stigmatized or culturally marginalized groups. We all hold biases of some kind, and at Cultur-ED we focus on unearthing cultural and racial biases. Each section is discussed in relation to the broader themes of protest and the architectural elements used during uprisings, such as barricades and makeshift camps. This exhibition extends the conversation started by Delacroix, showcasing contemporary symbols and structures of resistance, from Bahrain’s Pearl Roundabout to the tactical layouts of modern protest camps.
