Nas sees it bigger hiring some of the biggest producers at the time, including Dr. Dre, DJ Premier, Stretch and Trackmasters. There are songs for the radio like If I Ruled The World (featuring Lauren Hill) and Street Dreams. But he never aims for the dance floor. Nas still talks about life in the ghetto and proves he’s still one of the greatest storytellers ever. Just check out I Gave You Power, an incredible song! Nas - "Illmatic" (1994) 30th anniversary Let’s get the story straight: “Illmatic” is one of the greatest albums in Hip Hop history, without a doubt. ‘Nasty Nas’ really came into the limelight under the direction of MC Search (3rd Bass), who signed him and let him appear for the first time on the track “Halftime” of the soundtrack to the film “Zebrahead”. His mentor and actual discoverer, however, is Large Professor, who - himself a super-talented rapper and producer - gave Nas a feature part on the track “Live at the Barbecue” on the Main Source classic “Breaking Atoms” back in 1991 and had already discovered the above-average qualities of this exceptional young talent at that time. It was also Large Professor who produced a total of three tracks on the debut album “Illmatic”, alongside big names such as DJ Premier, Pete Rock and Q-Tip. Everyone has their own interpretation, but for me the story of Nas is inevitably linked to the story of Large Professor, so it was an honour to meet him a few years ago and have him sign both the Nas album and the test pressing of Nas’ Main Source contribution “Live at the Barbecue”. Honour to whom honour is due, who knows how the story would have been written but for me it’s forever linked to the people mentioned. And so when I think of Nas, I automatically think of Large Professor and vice versa.
