The University’s Archives and Chau Chak Wing Museum’s Macleay Collections were part of a joint nomination with the National Library and Archives of Tuvalu, State Library of NSW, National Library of Australia, and the Australian Museum. The expedition was led by the University’s eminent Professor of Geology, Tannant William Edgeworth (TWE) David. The Funafuti expedition used novel technologies to investigate the origin and mode of growth of coral formations, seeking to resolve the theoretical differences of Charles Darwin and John Murray. The scientific records amassed include photographs of families and family life across Tuvalu, along with the diary and letters of Caroline Edgeworth David describing her experiences in Funafuti and her interactions with the people her husband worked with. The photographs and archives document a different coastal view from today, where what was dry land is submerged due to climate change. Today the nation of Tuvalu continues to assert its legal ownership of the marine space the islands are part of. The UNESCO "World Documentary Heritage Program" has three objectives: the preservation of world documentary heritage, particularly in areas affected by conflict and/or natural disaster; universal accessibility of the world's important documentary heritage; and, the promotion of global awareness of the importance of documentary heritage. In this case the listing will assist the nation of Tuvalu to maintain its memories in the face of climate change and to develop narratives and resources as they work towards a protective marine park for the Coral Sea. * * * * Once upon a time . . . .there was a point and on that point there was a ribbon that looked a bit like a Chinese or Japanese written character and directly above this ribbon there was a painting of a shaggy dog wearing a blue sun hat which looked somewhat like a flying saucer or UFO (Unidentified flying object) and if this was the cover of a recently published book delivered to the National Library of Australia as part of the Legal Deposit Scheme which states that a copy of all books published should be sent to the National Library (and a copy to the State Library in the state in which it was published) then it most likely would be accessioned into the collections and catalogued as a Shaggy Dog Story. What is the point? I am not really sure. What do you think? Harry Nilsson's magnificent children's album "The Point" (1971) began with the premise that "everything has a point" and finally suggests that "the point is that there is no point." The bookshop of the title, I think, was meant to be the centre of a story about Canberra during World War II. However, Verity Hewitt and her bookshop, and even Canberra itself, after the initial introduction, seem out of place when they suddenly popped up. The book reads more as an anecdotal reflection on various moments of the Australian war story that result in publishable materials, which are then linked back to the eponymous bookshop as “were probably stocked” or “were available” there. There are also a cast of characters who are noted to have ‘possibly visited’ the bookshop. The book feels a little disjointed. But if you take each chapter individually, I found it interesting to learn more about some of Canberra’s earlier residents (temporary and lifers) and the role they played in the war effort and in the development of Canberra, particularly the latter in the sense of the cultural and social community of the nation’s capital. For this reason, I have given the book a three-star rating and would recommend it to those who are interested in learning more about the national capital and Australia during the war. What it didn’t do for me is tell me enough about Verity Hewitt and her bookshop, which is what led me to purchase the book after being drawn I by the gorgeous, pick-me-up-and-buy-me cover, a painting by Frank Hinder, c. 1945.
