#25 @sam.crowe I’m spending the next weeks telling you about my musical friends and collaborators….sharing thoughts on why I love them and why you should listen to their music. Here we go… Nobody I know gives off the lovelier, more positive musical vibe than Sam Crowe. No wonder he’s so in demand as a keys player and producer, working with the likes of Lianne la Havas, Little Simz, Jordan Rakei & Cleo Sol. We grew up musically together in our 20s, jamming endlessly, discovering Billie Holiday, playing jazz gigs with @emine.sings , and getting pissed in East London. His piano sound is so gorgeous and he’s a master of synths, with a huge palette of sounds, harmonies and textures at his fingertips. Sam embodies the act of combining musical brilliance with making everyone around him feel comfortable, a quality I've found to be very rare indeed. We’ve learnt so much together and still love sharing music. I loved playing percussion on a few tracks for his band Native Dancer (with one of my favourite singers @fridatouray), including this one, ‘Currents’. Plus a clip from @sandsfilms_musicroom with @barnabykeen, @jakelongdrums & @liannelahavas. A very, very old pal and just the sweetest, funniest dude. Milton Nascimento - Milton ‘76 A follow up of sorts to Wayne Shorter’s “Native Dancer” from a year earlier. Again we have Milton Nascimento, Wayne Shorter, and Herbie Hancock recording an album stateside. Several of Milton’s compositions from “Clube Da Esquina” and otherwise receive English lyrics. Here’s “Fairy Tale Song (Cadê)” originally recorded for his “Milagre Dos Peixes” album from ‘73. The release of “Milagre Dos Peixes” suffered from scrutinizing military censorship, and subsequently Milton chose to release a majority of the album as instrumental tracks rather than rewriting the lyrics. Currently statued in Centennial Park in Saratoga Springs, Native Dancer, also known as the “gray ghost”, is remembered for his extraordinary career record of 22–1. His incredible, undefeated 1952 season featured a win in the Saratoga Special Stakes, and succeeded to win the Travers Stakes in Saratoga Springs in 1953. His 1953 season allowed his sole loss in the first leg of the Triple Crown, the Kentucky Derby, but proceeded to win the final two American Classics, Preakness and Belmont Stakes. He was the only dancer in the category to get a solo under the light, it was stunning, his silhouette glowed. As you can see in the video (in the comments), it was nowhere near as dark. 【No.159】『Esperanza』 / Esperanza Spalding この作品は買った時からずっと好きですね。車等でBGM的に流して聴いていても、いつも引き込まれて新しい発見をしてしまう密かな？お気に入り作品。と言っても本作の主人公エスペランサ・スポルディングさんは今やグラミーを何回も受賞してしまう程のビッグ・アーティスト。 エスペランサさんは基本ボーカリストかつベーシスト(ベースを弾きながら歌うスタイルですが、これ結構難度高いです。）ですが、作曲、アレンジ、プロデュースまですべてこなしてしまう総合音楽クリエーター的な物凄い才能の持ち主です。 本作はエスペランサさんの2作目の作品(2008年リリース)ですが、大手コンコード傘下のヘッズ・アップレーベルでの１作目であり、実質的なデビュー作品とも言えます。 私これ、リリース時にどこかのCDショップで買ったはず。たぶん「期待の新人」的なポップが張ってあって、ジャケットのアフロのエスペランサさんがなかなかキュートな感じでしかもウッド・ベースを担いでいるギャップ感がこれまた良かった。恐らく試聴もしたのです。まあとにかく1曲目の「Ponta De Areia」に完全にやられてしまったんです。ちょっと細身だけど素直な伸びのある魅力的な声、そしてなんといっても曲のアレンジが素晴らしい。 この曲はウェイン・ショーターさん(sax)と"ブラジルの声"とも言われるミルトン・ナシメントさんとのコラボの傑作『Native Dancer』(1975年リリース【No.50】を参照)の有名な1曲目。この大好きな曲をこれまたカッコ良くしつらえたエスペランサさんに脱帽して、即買いとなりました。 結果この作品やはり大当たりだった訳です。ラテン的なフレーバーを持ちながらもバックの演奏もかなり攻めていて、この点ではしっかりジャズでもあって、曲もしっかり練られていて、聴きやすそうでいて、一緒に歌えないような難しいボーカル・ラインだったりと聴きごたえ十分な実に良くできた作品なのです。 エスペランサさんは84年にオレゴン州で生まれました。5歳でヴァイオリンを手にして地元の室内楽クラブで10年演奏し、最後は15歳でコンサートマスターになっていました。この頃からベースにも興味を持ち、16歳で高校を中退して、資格試験により奨学金付きでポートランド州立大学の音楽科に当時最年少のベーシストとして入学。1年半足らずでステップアップのためボストンのバークリー音楽大学に転校。3年後の2005年に卒業すると同時にバークリーの講師として史上最年少の20歳で招聘されました。07年にスペインのレーベルで1作目(ピアノ・トリオ)を発表しています。この時点で既にパット・メセニーさん等にその才能を認められ、パティ・オースティンさんやジョー・ロヴァーノさんのツアーに同行する等、活躍の場を広げていったんです。 さて本作を聴いていて常に感じるのは、本作はパーカッション入りピアノ・トリオが基本形ですが、実に音が厚く、かつ熱いことです。それは厚めのコーラスの存在と常に攻めているバッキングにあると。特に相棒的存在のレオ・ジェノヴェーゼさんのピアノは物凄く才能を感じて、実に素晴らしいサポートをしており、本作の"あつさ"のキーになっています。 エスペランサさんのヒーローはウェイン・ショーターさんなんです。ウェインさんが晩年、最後に手掛けたオペラ作品『Iphigenia』はエスペランサさんとの共作なんです。本作の「Ponta De Areia」にも彼女のウェインさんへの敬愛を感じます。聴きましょう！ #esperanza #esperanzaspalding #leogenovese #otisbrown #jameyhaddad #wayneshorter #nativedancer #patmetheny #jazzvocal #jazzbassist #music #lovemusic #jazz #lovejazz #cdcollection #jazzkissa #cdコレクション #音楽のある生活 #音楽のある暮らし #音楽のある風景 #ジャズ #ジャズ好き #音楽好き #ジャズ喫茶 #rugby #givepeaceachance

Native Dancer (1950-1967): Native Dancer, affectionately nicknamed "The Grey Ghost", was famous for his ability to stand out on black and white television sets. In a crowd of bays and chestnuts, his light coat allowed him to shine through the screen. His affinity for crossing the wire first also made him easy to spot and fun for racing fans to follow. Born in 1950 in Kentucky and raised in Maryland, Native Dancer transformed into an almost unbeatable racehorse. His only loss in his 22-race career occurred on the First Saturday in May of 1953 when he lost the Kentucky Derby by a scant head to a horse named Dark Star. He recovered to win the following two jewels of the Triple Crown of horse racing, the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes, as well as every other race he contested in afterward. Though he lost the Kentucky Derby, the American people could not get enough of Native Dancer. An article published by Time magazine in 1954 claimed, "The three stars of television this year are Arthur Godfrey, Ed Sullivan, and Native Dancer". His fame was compared to that of Elvis Presley; he was on the cover of Life magazine and was said to have sold more televisions than TV star Milton Berle. Native Dancer won countless awards during his racing career: ✨ 1952 Champion Two-Year-Old Colt ✨ 1952 Horse of the Year ✨ 1953 Champion Three-Year-Old Colt ✨ 1954 Champion Older Horse ✨ 1954 Horse of the Year His accomplishments did not end on the track. Native Dancer became one of the most influential stallions to ever exist, namely as the broodmare sire of Northern Dancer and the grandsire of Mr. Prospector.
