We had an amazing morning at Horicon Marsh. The kids went out and walked around looking for parts of a plant. This is where I learned that wild parsnip is not a friendly plant though you can prep it to eat. Huh! The more you know. 🌈 Then they were able to make art using the pieces of plants they collected which was pretty awesome. It was nice to see a couple of our Enjoying Nature class friends. I'm fairly certain Joe enjoyed it immensely. He is always down for some social time.

Another fantastic Monday Evening Walk (well, technically rescheduled to Wednesday) tonight with one of our largest groups yet enjoying the scenery, marsh birds and crepuscular birds all at @cvc_ca Rattray Marsh Conservation Area. Kirsten led the group out around the Knoll where several herons were spotted (Great Blue and Black-crowned Night) before Common Nighthawks delighted us with their aerial acrobatics while foraging for insects in the waning light. Last night's Swift Watch in Acton went really well, with 69 Chimney Swifts counted entering the chimney after sunset. The Chimney Swift is a Threatened species and counts like this are important to help track how local populations are doing. A very successful Great Canadian Birdathon was completed by SPNC members Mark Cranford, Donna Sheppard and Jim Watt on Wednesday, May 18th. Their day began at Long Point and concluded in Hamilton, with a grand total of 114 species observed between all three birders! Donna reports this total includes 21 species of warblers, including a Prothonotary, and a record of 3 Mourning and at least 5 Blue-winged. The Big Creek marsh had 5 Great Egrets and a family of Sandhill Cranes. Westman Naturalists is comprised of a team of local volunteers with a love for nature and conservation. We would like to highlight some of our amazing volunteers over the next week and share the stories of how we have come together. Starting with a couple of our founding members! Alex is our current president and helps organize talks during the winter, while Steffi is the webmaster and helps with advertising events. Alex enjoys leading walks in the Brandon Hills discussing geomorphology, and Steffi is a jack of all trades, participating in a variety of talks and outings. Steffi and Alex love being outside, whether it's gardening, hiking, canoeing, or skiing. They've both been hiking and camping with their families since they were young and followed career paths accordingly (Biology for Steffi, Geography for Alex). They've lived and travelled across Canada joining Naturalists clubs along the way: the Prince George Naturalist club in British Columbia and the Fredericton Naturalist Club in New Brunswick. Visited by Charles Darwin early in his career as a naturalist, observations made by him on the islands became a critical part of his theory of natural selection. Last week I had the pleasure of heading down south to give a talk for the Busselton Naturalists Club, all about the wonders of Australia's carnivorous plants 😍🌿 including some history of carnivorous plant science, my own PhD research, and what the future of carnivorous plants might be... I had such a great time at the meeting, it was so lovely chatting with everyone there! One person even got there early to show me a collage of photos she'd taken of the Albany pitcher plant, which was so sweet - I love seeing the enthusiasm people have about these amazing plants ☺️🌱 Big thanks to the club's president Bernie for inviting me! I'm also so grateful to two of the club members, Geoff and Sue, who let me stay the night with them in Busselton. Амурский тигр и дальневосточный леопард сфотографировались на фоне Владивостока Снимки, сделанные фотоловушкой, подтвердили: внесенные в Красную книгу дикие кошки действительно живут по соседству с главным центром российского Дальнего Востока. За жизнью обитателей «Земли леопарда» круглосуточно наблюдают объективы крупнейшей сети фотоловушек в России – в Приморском национальном парке их более 400. С их помощью специалисты устанавливают количество животных, наблюдают за их состоянием и поведением. Новая съемка была сделана в части нацпарка, территориально входящей во Владивостокский городской округ, неподалеку от берега Амурского залива, разделяющего юго-запад Приморья и город. Установив на вершине одной из гор камеру, специалисты направили ее объектив на море, за которым виднеются силуэты высоток и мостов мегаполиса. Вскоре перед объективом поочередно появились дальневосточный леопард и амурский тигр. «Появление таких снимков стало для нас долгожданным событием, – отметил Виктор Сторожук, сотрудник отдела науки ФГБУ «Земля леопарда». – Мы стремились не только получить новые данные об обитающих здесь животных, но и хотели показать: на самом деле природа очень близка к людям, имеет со всеми нами неразрывную связь. Для многих леопард и тигр – лишь образ зверей, обитающих где-то далеко в тайге. Но эти уникальные создания реальны и очень близки нам. Мы живем с ними на одной земле». Проанализировав рисунка пятен на шкуре леопарда, сотрудники нацпарка идентифицировали хищника: это самец Leo 65M, котенок самки по имени Грация. Раньше он попадал в объективы фотоловушек на границе с Китаем. В «Земле леопарда» говорят, что с Leo 65M все в порядке: он находится в хорошей форме и не испытывает проблем с охотой.
