On this day in North Carolina history, carnival musician Cancetto Farmica died...and wasn't buried for 60 years. According to Find a Grave, Cancetto Farmica was born in Italy in 1888. At some point, he came to the United States and worked in a carnival. In April of 1911, Farmica got into an argument with a fellow carnival worker in McColl, South Carolina, who killed him with tent stake. Farmica was taken to the hospital in nearby Laurinburg, North Carolina, where he was operated on, but died about 12 hours later. The body was then moved to McDougald Funeral Home in that town. Farmica was embalmed at the request of his family, with an additional request to hold his body until further instructions were given. However, he instructions never came and the body was stored in the garage of the funeral home where it became a mummified tourist attraction. People came from all over to view Farmica's body (popularly known then as "Spaghetti"). By the early 1970s, the story made its way to Congress, where Congressman Biaggi of New York initiated the final burial of the mummy, although the funeral home resented the intrusion of Congress. Two years later, the body was finally buried after members of the local community offered to pay for it. In 1972, Farmica was buried in Hillside Cemetery in Laurinburg, 61 years after his death. #OnThisDay #nchistory #laurinburgnc #cancettofarmica #mummified

My daughter and I were asleep in our beds in Lumberton, NC in April 1865 when we woke to the sound of someone breaking down our door. Two men came into our room and dragged us from our beds. They bound our hands and feet and beat us mercilessly. Three of my teeth were knocked out. The men then proceeded to destroy our furniture and steal our clothes. I identified the men as Ambrose James and Riley Parnell. The Freedmen’s Bureau issued arrest warrants for both men. The outcome of the case is unknown. My name was SEELY SMITH. https://freedmensbureau.info/details/NMAAHC-007497938_00516 #outrage #Outrage #nchistory

Greetings about welcome to our April installment of Journey Story, Moving to Work. Today we are looking at what is now the VA Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina. Known as General Hospital No. 19 when it was first established in 1917, after the United States entered World War One, the Oteen Hospital focus was treating tuberculous, and other respiratory illnesses. Nurses and other medical personnel came from across the country to work and train at Oteen, which quickly showed itself to be the foremost treatment center for TB. Thousands of patients were treated at the hospital over the years. Oteen also included physical and occupational therapy programs to help soldiers return to military service or adapt to their injuries and learn new skills. These programs focused on arts, crafts, and education to improve dexterity, mental hardiness, and morale. Image Credits: Anna Johnson, RA, with colored patients. #OnThisDay in 1865, the largest troop surrender of the Civil War took place on the farm of James and Nancy Bennitt in what was then Orange County. Ten days earlier Union Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman and Confederate Gen. Joseph E. Johnston met to begin negotiations at the Bennitt farm, which was located halfway between the Union forces in Raleigh and the Confederate forces in Greensboro. After several days of negotiations, which were complicated by the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, Johnston surrendered his army. Johnston’s forces included all Confederate troops in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida, nearly 90,000 soldiers in all. During the negotiations, Johnston and fellow general Wade Hampton used the Alexander Dickson house, located 1.5 miles south of the Town of Hillsborough, as their headquarters, with troops camping around the Dickson farm. The house was chosen because it was in sight of the railroad that ran between Raleigh and Greensboro and was close to the road leading to Durham Station. The Dickson house was moved to downtown Hillsborough in 1983, and now serves as the Hillsborough Visitors Center and the home of the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough. Welcome! This is the Slade House’s center hall. Definitely not the most opulent or largest … yet still has charm. This is the first time it has been empty, except for a few minor items you see, in the two years since we became its stewards. Yesteryear the doors would have been thrown open wide to permit the breezes to cool the house. We haven’t worked on this space yet. Except for one deep clean and peeling off some of the latex paint the previous owner decided would be a good idea to apply over portions of the walls. Pic 1 is looking from the back of the house to the front double doors, which are from an early 1900’s home improvement project. We hope to share more of this space in our Instagram stories in the near future. • • • #historicsladehouse #historichouse #historicalhouse #historicpreservation #thisplacematters #oldhouselife #thisoldhouse #southernhome #vintagehome #bhghome #myvintagehome #vintagefarmhouse #farmhouserenovation #oldhouserenovation #oldhouse #vintagelife #vintageliving #farmhouseliving #farmhouselife #mybhghome #fixerupper #nchistory #deservetopreserve #oldhousecommunity

On this day in North Carolina history, Meadow Lemon III (known professionally as Meadowlark Lemon) was born, later moving to Wilmington at age 6 🏀⛹️‍♂ A fan of basketball from an early age, Lemon used to tell the story that his first basketball ensemble was a hoop made from an onion sack and a coat hanger with a Carnation milk can as a ball. After seeing the Harlem Globetrotters in a movie theater newsreel, he ran home to tell his father that he planned to join the team and, in 1954, he did just that. Lemon changed his name to Meadowlark in the late 50s, but he was also widely known as the “Clown Prince of Basketball.” As one of the best-known Globetrotters, Lemon became a television star, portraying himself in television shows like Gilligan’s Island and in cartoons like Scooby-Doo. Lemon retired from the Globetrotters in 1979, became an ordained minister in 1986 and established Meadowlark Lemon Ministries in 1994. He was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 1975. Meadowlark Lemon’s Globetrotters uniform is among the hundreds of sports-related artifacts on view at the N.C. Museum of History’s North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame exhibit. #onthisday #nchistory #meadowlarklemon #harlemglobtrotters

In the heart of Greensboro, NC lies the lush green fields of the Gillespie Golf Course. Thousands of Greensboro natives drive by the golf course daily without a second thought, unaware that Gillespie Golf Course, once named Gillespie Park, was the site of civil disobedience that began changing the sport of golf for the better. In 1955, Gillespie Park was city-owned but privately leased out by a group of white citizens. Play was restricted to white members and their guests only. On December 7, 1955, a week after Rosa Parks made history, six black men decided to make history of their own and play golf in Gillespie Park. Phillip Cooke, Samuel Murray, Elijah Herring, Joseph Sturdivant, Dr. George Simkins, and Leonidas Wolfe walked into Gillespie Park, paid the attendant the 75 cents per person fee, and headed to the fields to tee off, despite objections from employees and members alike. The Greensboro Six played nine holes while being followed and watched by police through each hole. They were arrested and charged with trespassing. The case made its way to the Supreme Court, where they lost their appeal. A federal complaint was then filed, and a judge finally sided with the Greensboro Six, ordering the golf course to be integrated. Two weeks before the integration was to take effect, the clubhouse at Gillespie burned down, and the city council voted to condemn the property. On December 7, 1962, a new city council voted to reopen Gillespie Park as Gillespie Golf Course to ALL Greensboro residents, where it continues to remain active today. #blackhistory #greensboronc #historyspeaks #inplainsight #civilrights #nchistory #theghostguild

⛪︎ In its 234-year history, the historic Dickerson Chapel has served many roles in Hillsborough. It’s been a courthouse, where Black people were sold into slavery. It’s been a church for both white Baptist and African Methodist Episcopal congregations. It has hosted abolitionist meetings and housed a school. Today, the building from 1790 serves as a shining example of the importance of preserving history. In our special report, Tammy Grubb delves into Dickerson Chapel’s history and the efforts made to preserve it so others may learn of its significance to Hillsborough, and to North Carolina. When I was in high school a magical store existed in Winston- Salem that was full of dead stock clothing from the 1970s. When I decided to write an article about it for our website I had no idea about the 80 years of rich history lurking under the surface - one involving Japanese denim collectors, tobacco farmers, Emmylou Harris, civil rights, working class history, Playboy magazine, and of course bell bottom jeans! Above is a little excerpt from the article detailing my experience shopping there. This month, HWF’s Plaque Committee got schooled—and we loved every second of it! Instead of gathering at our usual spot, the committee took a field trip to the @uncwilmington campus, where some master’s students in the Public History program presented research on seven plaque applications for local properties! This was a culminating project for the students, who participated in monthly Plaque Committee meetings all semester. Soon, their work will be commemorated on hand-painted plaques hung outside these historic homes! We’re grateful to these scholars and their professor, Dr. Julius Jones, along with the Public History program, for partnering with us to preserve and protect our community’s built history. To learn more about our plaque program—one of the most prolific in the country, with more than 700 plaques issued to date—visit historicwilmington.org/plaques. #historicpreservation #savinghistory #preservation #wilmingtonnc #wilmington #history #architecture #oldhouselove #historic #historichomes #restoration #oldhouse #preserve #oldhousecharm #historichouse #thisplacematters #historicarchitecture #thisoldhouse #architecturelovers #vintagehome #oldhouses #savingplaces #historicalhomes #nchistory

“Considered Raleigh’s “Main Street” for much of its history, in the nineteenth century Fayetteville Street often acted as a parade ground, hosting such events as the march of Union troops toward the State Capitol in 1865…..A streetcar line served the district from 1891 until 1933, when the tracks were paved over for automobile access. In 1977, in an effort to revitalize downtown Raleigh’s central spine, Fayetteville Street was converted to a car-free pedestrian mall, with a master plan by landscape architect Lewis Clarke. The road closure had the opposite effect, however, and many businesses were shuttered in the years that followed. In 2006 the City reopened the street to traffic. “ #raleigh #raleighnc #nchistory

#OnThisDay in 1807, an enslaved man named Taff escaped from the plantation in an attempt to secure his freedom. Taff was one of the surviving native Africans forcibly brought to the plantation 21 years earlier. The following advertisement appeared in the Washington Gazette and Weekly Advisor on July 24: “20 Dollars Reward RUN-AWAY from the subscriber on lake Phelps in Washington county, about the 20th of April a negro fellow named TAFF, Is stout built, about five six or seven inches high, Guinea Born, with the marks of his country in his face. When he went away he had on a white drab coat with a black cape and Breeches of the same. I will give the above reward to any person who will deliver the said negro to me, or so secure him in any Goal that I may get him. THOMAS TROTTER. June 5, 1807.” What became of Taff is unknown, as we have no surviving primary sources about him after this advertisement. 📸 courtesy of @librarycongress . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #SomersetPlaceSHS #NCHistoricSites #NCCulture #ExploreNC #VisitNC #ExploreCarolina #CarolinaOnMyMind #OnlyInNorthCarolina #HistoryLovers #HistoryNerd #HistoryMatters #ThisPlaceMatters #AfricanAmericanHistory #BlackHistory #TellTheFullStory #Plantation #Slavery #FreedomSeeker #NCHistory #EasternNC

With spring in full swing, our corner of the world is awash in lush green buds and blades—which means it’s once again time to take up our mowers, weed eaters, hedge shears, and other tools of the trade as we tend to Maides Cemetery! Since 2021, HWF has partnered with community advocate Kathy King to provide perpetual care for this historic African-American burial ground. With winter behind us, our monthly meet-ups can resume! Join us on Saturday, April 27, 9am to noon, at 1101 Manly Avenue for a morning of service. Whether it’s breezy and cool or warm and muggy (you never know this time of year!), we recommend wearing long pants, boots/high shoes, and gloves. Three years ago today, we enjoyed a visit to historic Whalehead Club, a 21,000-square-foot Art Nouveau and craftsman-style mansion built in the Roaring Twenties along North Carolina’s Currituck Outer Banks. Edward and Marie-Louise Knight, who inherited their fortunes, were a well-to-do couple with a taste for the good life. They named the estate Corolla Island and built their “cottage” as a hunting retreat and social hub. This is a unique building in a beautiful landscape with a storied history. “A gracious thank you goes to Alex Castillero and Bank of America for the donation of this 19th-century French clock. The intention, initially, was for it to be donated to the Graham Museum but instead, it was given to NationsBank when they bought and renovated Elmhurst, 30 years ago, which was previously owned by McClure Funeral Services. Alex worked with bank officials to give the clock to the museum. Brian Faucette, Graham Recreation & Parks director, and Karen Chin, museum board member, were on hand to accept this beautiful artifact. Stop by to see this piece of Graham’s history. It was purported to have been owned by L. Banks Holt and resided in the house shown in the painting above the mantel.” - Russell Compton, Chair of the Graham Historical Museum Advisory Board If you are interested in learning more about the Historical Museum or have items to loan or gift, please call (336) 513-5510.
