A few more shots of Syracuse’s incredible Niagara Mohawk Building, in a second post because unless I’m missing something really obvious (which has been known to happen), IG doesn’t let you put horizontal and vertical photos in the same post anymore. Not that I’m complaining, because this building is a beauty. As a funny sidenote, you have no idea how hard it was to straighten out that last pic. For such a geometric building, it does a great job of looking off-kilter. I think it’s something to do with the way the light and shadows hit all those intricate setbacks and stainless steel. In my next few posts, I’ll be sharing some architectural highlights from Syracuse, New York. Anytime we visit a new city, I insist on dragging my parents and brother around to see the local landmarks. And how could I not? Look at this place. This is the Niagara Mohawk Building, built in 1932 as the headquarters of upstate New York’s major electric company. Envisioned as a “cathedral of light,” its richly detailed exterior was designed in conjunction with an elaborate decorative lighting system. The facade is studded with gem-like glass accents that light up from within (I wish I’d been able to stay in town long enough to get a night shot!). The focal point of the front elevation is an 8-foot-tall winged statue called Spirit of Light, meant to personify electricity. Apparently he’s known locally as “Iron Mike.” I’m not entirely sure what goes on inside the building these days—it’s still owned by Niagara Mohawk’s successor company, and the internet says they still use it as office space, but it’s almost certainly a secondary facility. They’re definitely aware of its significance, though, and they’ve maintained it immaculately, even upgrading the lighting system with color-changing LEDs. I’m going to be bold and say that this may be the most underrated building in America. It’s easily one of my favorite buildings, ever. I’ve been intrigued by this building since hearing about it from my boss a few months back. With the winter blahs, bad weather at night impeding my astrophotography and overall lack of motivation to shoot getting the best of me, I decided to break the spell this weekend. On a whim I got in the car and drove 3.5 hours to Syracuse to photograph the Niagara Mohawk Building. It was totally worth the trip (as you can see) and even sparked a bit of a desire to shoot some architecture in the near future. King and Lawrence Bley & Duane Lyman (Bley & Lyman) Niagara Mohawk Building is an outstanding example of Art Deco architecture and a symbol of the “Age of Electricity”. The building became the headquarters for the nation’s largest electric utility company and expressed the technology of electricity through its modern design. King (1868-1946) joined the office of James H. Kirby in 1885 and later Archimedes Russell, becoming Russell's partner in 1906. Following Russell's death in 1915, King practiced under his own name. As of this post, the architectural office he founded is still in existence as King & King Architects in Manlius, NY. Lyman (1886–1966) was born in Lockport, NY. He graduated from Yale. He is known for his prolific career which included many school buildings, churches, and large homes. At the time of his death, Lyman was referred to as the "dean of Western New York Architecture”. Bley was from Hamburg, NY. His partnership with Lyman and Williams Lansing lasted for less than ten years. Bley & Lyman then worked together for two decades. When Bley died in 1939, Lyman carried on as Lyman & Associates until his passing in 1966. Sources 1. Niagara Mohawk Building (National Grid) is a stunning art deco style building in Syracuse, NY. It was completed in 1932. The top part is lit every night. It's usually a warm glow.
