Well, I went back and reconverted the RAW with the Velvia film simulation and turned white balance to “auto, ambience priority” and got a completely different feel to the image (I shot on “daylight” white balance in the field). I think Fuji’s automatic white balance did a pretty good job for such a tough scene. What do you think? The Velvia film simulation definitely increases contrast and makes the greens and purples pop! My husband and I have two wonderful pre/teen boys who I get to spend half my day homeschooling. My amazing husband and I are both Army veterans who served in Iraq (and he in Afghanistan, too). Although, I do percieve that there are still a lot of individuals operating from an ego and trauma based mentality. Relying on survival tactics from a time in their life where they helped them manage what they were experiencing; yet, holds them back from experiencing the pure bliss of the now. Our shadow offers us much insight on how we traverse these times when we integrate them in healthy ways. Our self-awareness is our greatest super power at this time. Being able to self access how our actions ripple out into the world, listening to the direction our emotions point us in and rising up to meet our higher self and deliver the medicine we incarnated to bring to the table. People operating from a place of radical self love and actualization are the warriors of our time. Shining light on the shadows in the world and within. Standing between the perversion of modern civilization and Gaia and her children, including the individual, their ancestors and their descendants. Free yourself from all the chaos, expectations, and shadow of the modern sickness and find yourself dwelling in the peace that resides within your own being. You’d never know it from the photos, but a simple snapshot of this place produced hazy, evening glow images that didn’t do this home any justice. The views were lovely, sure, but I wanted to make sure we got the best of both worlds. The majority of the exterior images facing the Elkhorns required some tricky positioning and a handful of shots with manually blended frames of my hand actually blocking the sun! We have easy access to endless mountains, lakes, and the great outdoors. We have the best little ski resort. Exciting News - Our plans to establish a state licensed poultry and rabbit processing facility on our farm were APPROVED by the county land use board. In past seasons, we have processed our chicken under an exemption that allows us to process on-farm in a simple open-air set up. This exemption only allows us to sell whole chickens directly to you. Starting this season, we want to expand to include a suite of products - such as boneless skinless breasts, chicken thighs, spatchcock chickens, chicken livers, and more. While we plan to stay focused on direct-to-consumer sales (find us at the Baker City Farmers Market this summer!), we also want to be able to sell our product at local businesses, regional food hubs, and restaurants. Most pasture poultry producers get over this legal hurdle by transporting their birds long distances to chicken processors. There are two good processors we could use a couple hours away, but it has always been important to us to be in 100% control of our product. If we used an established processor, our birds would be processed on their schedule - not ours - with minimal opportunity for making adjustments due to variable growth of birds, weather, emergencies on the farm, etc. We also worry about the impact on quality of our product having to transport hundreds of birds at a time hours to and from processing at 70 mph in the summer heat. Processing has also become very expensive, leading to high cost of product and wasted time. So we have been working toward an alternative solution for our farm - our own, on-farm, state licensed poultry and rabbit processing facility. With our own facility, from the time our birds arrive on-farm as 2-day-old chicks to the time they go into the freezer as packaged meat; they will only travel a couple hundred yards total in that entire process. With a family operated facility, every single chicken will go through our hands in every step of the process. This ensures the quality of our meat and allows us to be aware of any changes we need to make in our production. Now that we have approval, it is time for us to get to work! We will keep you updated as our building project progresses.
Full Poster Alert! The Josephy Center for Arts & Culture and Nez Perce Wallowa Homeland are overjoyed to announce the 2nd annual winter music festival in Joseph, Oregon, Feb. 16-17. Renowned Nez Perce jazz vocalist Julia Keefe, from Spokane and New York City, and her quartet will be headlining Saturday night. Two generations back, during the 50s and 60s, the Nez Percians brought indigenous jazz from Lapwai to Wallowa County. We are pleased that, so many years later, we can facilitate the arrival of another innovative Nez Perce musician. We are also delighted to announce Kola Shippentower (Cayuse/Umatilla/Walla Walla/Niimiipuu/Samoan background) as a movement arts teacher, for her hip-hip dance fitness workshop on Saturday at 11 AM. She is a professional fighter and holds a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Tyus Beebe, a Blood Indian who grew up on Blackfoot territory in Alberta, Canada, will be opening the festival with country music on Friday night. Our Friday headliner is Afrosonics, a pan-African roots, opera and jazz fusion band founded by a Nigerian and an Idahoan. At the heart of the group’s progression, the band has conscientiously integrated new American musicians and former refugees from war torn areas of the world into the collective that is Afrosonics. Other musical acts include Mungo (Malawian soul), Matt Cooper/Greg Johnson Duo (Piano and Saxophone), and Janis Carper (local Americana/roots). Movement teachers include Esther Petrocine of Salutations Studios, and Lauren MacDonald and Caroline Leone of Heartbeat Wellness. Mungo will also be teaching a contemporary dance class. Dr. Rachel Sterry of Wallowa Ave. Wellness will be teaching an introduction to kettlebells fitness class. Yoga mats and pads will be provided free of charge. Music will start at 7 PM each evening, with doors opening at 6:30 PM. Yoga and movement will be at 9 AM, 11 AM, and 1 PM each morning and afternoon, for a total of 6 movement arts sessions. And so it begins.... Winter finally came over the weekend. No chickens to move daily on pasture, no fences to build, no goats to birth, and no guilty feelings when you have already worked 14 hours but the sun is still up. The snow, short days, and frozen ground signal a time of year for us to recharge our batteries, regroup as a family and have some fun (see you at Anthony Lakes!). It is also a time to plan for the year ahead and work on building our business. Hi, Tyler here, my spectacular Jumbo Coturnix Quail are growing fast!! My Grandpa and I built an outstanding quail cage out of salvaged wood. It has three levels all with pullout feces trays and egg rollouts.
