Yn ôl CADW, mae’r adeilad yn eglwys fechan wedi’i gwneud o gerrig, mae’n tarddu o’r oesoedd canol, ond cafodd ei hailadeiladu bron yn llwyr yn y bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg. Yr Eglwys yng Nghymru sy’n berchen arni a chaiff ei phrydlesu i Ymddiriedolaeth Natur De a Gorllewin Cymru. Ers 2018, mae criw anhygoel o bobl – sef Cyfeillion Eglwys Llandyfeisant – wedi bod yn adfer yr eglwys fel y gellir ei hagor a’i defnyddio. Un elfen o’r gwaith hwn yw llwyddiant y llawr pren newydd. **** The church of Llandyfeisant, nestles in Castle Woods on the Dinefwr Estate, it seems to belong to its setting, almost part of the landscape itself. Its history is long and varied, the current building being attributed to R. K. Penson in 1857. CADW describe the structure as a ‘small stone church of medieval origin but almost entirely rebuilt in later 19th century’ The church is owned by The Church in Wales and leased to @wildlifetrustsww. Since 2018 a group of incredible people, The Friends of Llandyfeisant Church, have been working to restore the church and see it open and in good use. One of the steps to achieve this, is the recent success of a new wooden floor. You may have spotted this 19th century large tabriz carpet in the recent filming with BBC Countryfile. Having now completed the clean, the team have now moved it into storage whilst maintenance work takes place within the castle. Fun fact 💭 The carpet is features in G.F.Bodley's Proposals in 1905 by Henry Charles Brewer. The watercolour painting was published in the Builder's Journal and Architectural Record and is still on display in the Oak Drawing room. It was seen as the start of summer, and after the challenges of winter it was greeted with dawnsio haf (summer dancing) and carolau mai (May carols). People would decorate the outside of their homes with hawthorn branches to symbolise growth and fertility and they’d turn their herds out to pasture for the first time. Nos Galan Mai, or May Eve, was considered one of three ysprydnos (spirit nights) when the veil between us and the spirit world was at its thinnest. Planted in the mid-19th century, the Pitmaston Duchess is thought to be the oldest tree in the Walled Garden, blossoming at Llanerchaeron for over 150 years. This heritage variety of pear is a cross between the French and Belgian varieties - Duchess d’Angoulême and Glou Morceau and is renowned for large golden-yellow juicy pears with a sweet delicate flavour. Throughout spring, there is an abundance of orchard blossom to enjoy at Llanerchaeron. The 18th century Walled Garden has been growing fruit and vegetables for 200 years and is home to over 100 fruit trees. This mammoth job would take one skilled gardener around 10 weeks to complete single-handedly, making around 65,000 cuts – thankfully we have a small team of staff and volunteers on hand to take on the challenge. The ancient art of pleaching trees involves connecting branches together to create a shaded walkway to promenade. The trees mark the position of the original walled border of the 17th Century garden. Every year we are treated to a spectacular display of bluebells at Dinefwr. The flowers have just started so they should be giving a good display for another three weeks if you want to plan a visit to see this wonderful, natural spectacle. Bluebells are sensitive to footfall and if their leaves are damaged, they can struggle to grow back. At Lodge Park Wood, there is now a haze of white flowers lining the woodland footpaths, but you may well smell the distinctive, oniony fragrance before you reach them. Also known as ransoms, wild garlic is an ancient woodland indicator and a sign you're walking in a special habitat. They say the older the woodland, the better the wild garlic. Stackpole’s trees are around 200 years old, with many planted by the Cawdors, the family who created the designed landscape on this historic 3000 acre estate. Rex Whistler’s works include a charming and informal portrait of Lady Caroline Paget, daughter of 6th Marquess of Anglesey, his unrequited love and somewhat muse, which will allow us to expand on the story of the Paget family’s relationship with this famous artist. Through the purchase of three watercolours and an oil painting by renowned Welsh artist Sir John Kyffin Williams, we also plan to explore links between him and the Anglesey family who encouraged his painting and career, buying and collecting many of his works before he rose to fame. These items will enable us to share more about our history as well as local links. These items include two artworks by Rex Whistler and four paintings by Sir Kyffin Williams. Over the centuries Plas Newydd has played host to and inspired many artists, notably Rex Whistler and his fantastical mural on display in the dining room. We’ve wanted to explore this personal history of Kyffin Williams and his links to Plas Newydd and are delighted that these will be our first paintings by Kyffin Williams on public display in the collection for the National Trust. The purchase has been made possible through the Monument 85 Fund. A fund supported by the National Trust set up by the late Simon Sainsbury. Pan brynodd Bodnant yn 1874 roedd yn ystâd gyda gardd furiog, coedwig a phlanhigfeydd, ond fe'i trawsnewidiwyd gan ei weledigaeth fawr i'r ardd fyd-enwog rydyn ni'n ei hadnabod heddiw. Gyda chymorth y tirluniwr Edward Milner, datblygodd yr ardd lwyni Fictoraidd ffurfiol o amgylch y tŷ, sefydlodd Bwa Laburnum enwog, a thirluniodd y llethr i lawr i'r afon gan ychwanegu conifferau Gogledd America a llwybrau troellog gan greu glynnoedd rhamantus a gerddi dŵr llonydd. Parhaodd trawsnewidiad yr ardd o dan arweiniad ei ferch, Laura McLaren, wnaeth ddatblygu'r ardd wyllt yn y Pen Draw, a'i ŵyr Henry Duncan McLaren, wnaeth gynhyrchu llawer o'r planhigion hybrid, yn arbennig rhododendronau, sy'n llenwi'r ardd gyda'u lliw bob gwanwyn. **** Nested in the foothills of Eryri (Snowdonia), @bodnantgardennt with its grand terraces and fertile woodland was the vision of one man, the Victorian industrialist Henry Davis Pochin. When he bought Bodnant in 1874 it was an estate with a walled garden, woods, and plantations, but his grand vision saw it transform into the world-renowned garden we know today. With the help of landscape designer Edward Milner, he developed the formal Victorian shrub garden around the house, established the famous Laburnum Arch, and sculpted the sloping valley down to the river adding North American conifers and winding pathways which created romantic dells and tranquil water gardens.
