Our first part of this four-part series focuses on Soviet operations in Latin America. Once again Andrew delivers a brilliant expose on KGB operations that seek to subvert, revolutionize and dismantle the Western powers and export revolution on the world stage, which is a good and underdiscussed point when learning about the Cold War (the CIA operations being bloated in comparison). Under Lenin, the newly formed Soviet Union considered Latin America a backwater of Western expansion and ownership, highlighting in "Imperialism: The Highest Stage of Capitalism" that "South America, especially Argentina, was under the financial control of London...it is almost a British commercial colony." Under Stalin, the biggest secret operation conducted in that part of the world was the assassination of Trotsky in Mexico City; beyond that, he railed against Latin America in 1951 as "the obedient army of the United States" and barely concentrated the money, arms or intelligence to influence it as much as he focused on the West and Asia.
