Why do we hold onto “what was”? Some of the branches on this tree have been dead for a couple years. No amount of hoping, praying, or wishing is gonna bring them back to life. It used to be a huge tree! But the storms came and it couldn’t withstand them. Now all those limbs are dead and it’s half the size it was. It’s better off than the tree that was beside it though! It’s gone…completely erased. It didn’t survive the storm. Only a small sphere of wood in the ground where it once stood strong. I need to prune these dead branches, let go of “what was.” Am I happy about it? No. Do I wish the tree was what it used to be? Yes. Am I sad the other tree got unalived? Very. But it’s time to move forward, to focus on the present and future. The past has passed. It’s time to grow again! I must be brave enough to see what’s ahead and stop regretting what is behind. "This book is writ in such a dialect as may the minds of listless men affect, it seems a novelty and yet contains nothing but sound and honest gospel strains" The Pilgrim's Progress is a classic for a reason; it stands the test of time with the universal aspect of salvation in Christ and the hindrances that attempt to befall us as Christians. The characters have such conspicuous names that I found myself initially was wondering if the reader was supposed to be offended at how obvious they were, but once I started reading I was appreciative of this choice by Bunyan. There's enough allegory present in the story without having to make everything mysterious. As Christian comes to faith and embarks on a journey to the Promised Land, he encounters no shortage of stumbling blocks ad he navigates the fallen world as a follower of Christ. I found so many of the characters he meets to be relatable to the world today, and also to my own faith journey. I forsee myself revisiting this book in the future, as it is one that I believe is more appreciated with each read-through. There are so many different editions and translations/modernizations that there is definitely more to glean. So why four and not five stars? Simply, the very last sentence in my edition. Project: Man - God - Machine Post 47 - Composition test - “The Philosopher’s Chair” Turns out there was one more composition swirling in my mind that I needed to flesh out before returning to the big Athena composition. Plato and his forms have once again, been looming large in my imagination. Thus, much like “The Philosopher’s Cenotaph” that I created last summer, “The Philosopher’s Chair” here remains empty, waiting for a worthy occupant. As a complete coincidence, I learned earlier that yesterday (April 26th) was in fact Marcus Aurelius’ birthday. Apropos for this post. I think he’d definitely be worthy. On a small side note, you’ll notice in the detail shot in the exact center of the image, the round back chair (really a “throne”), which I loosely based on the chair on which Lincoln is sitting, in the Daniel Chester French statue of him at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC. In this case I thought about the front edge faces which in the Lincoln statue are decorated with Roman Fasces. But in this case I imagined the edges being the flat spines of two large books sheathed in two enormous slots which are part of the chair and support the arm rests. Books of Knowledge. As if the chair itself contains the knowledge the philosopher who occupies it, seeks. All he needs to do is pull out the books and read. Effort, curiosity and patience are required. And of course notes, in the sketchbook which sits open on the table. While I won’t give away the inscription, for those interested in figuring it out, here’s a clue: it was written over the door to Plato’s Academy in Athens. An Allegory of Innocence and Guile The figure of this young woman richly dressed in dark green velvet, pearls, gems, lace and golden ribbons alludes to Christ's injunction to the apostles 'be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves' (Matthew 10. 16). She holds a serpent on her lap, while a white dove is suspended on the left. The gesture of her hand and her intent gaze address the beholder and reinforce the didactic intention of the painting. 💡Amongst too many other things, I’ve been gathering together paper sculpture ideas recently for an artist book work-in-progress. 🏠 This morning I found some photos in the depths of my phone. I made these little paper houses a few years ago for a printmaking experiment. 🔁 It might be time to re-visit this idea. 1. Drypoint etching printed on Somerset paper of a landscape sketched from childhood memory. 2. Solvent transfer printed on Somerset paper from a photograph of my maternal great grandparents’ wedding in Scotland, not long before they sailed out to Australia. 3. This right here is a band called Funkyman and the Ticklers. Established in 1973 by Funkyman (left) and Crunch (center), they were later joined by Sex Machine (right) for their 1975 EP entitled Weevil Woman. They were known for their bedazzling pyrotechnics during live performances, as well as their chaotic backstage party antics. The band dissolved in 1982, as a result of creative differences and Sex Machine’s reported flour addiction. Since then, they’ve mostly remained out of the limelight, besides a brief stint in which paparazzi caught Crunch holding hands with Ariana Grande, leaving an Applebee’s.
