Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve. Arizona The majority of the petroglyphs in this area have been attributed to the Hohokam tradition. These people are among the ancestors of the contemporary O'odham. Some of the petroglyphs show characteristics that are consistent with the Patayan. The Patayan tradition is found throughout western Arizona and as far west as the San Diego area in southern California. Hiked the 304 and Voaz Loop Trail at the Phoenix Mountain Preserve yesterday. I saw maybe 5 other people the entire time, it was awsome. 🌞 I wish I had more info on the pictograph in picture #2, unfortunately there was no available info at the park that I saw. Quarry site. Stone was harvested from this specific hill because of its unique, coarse sandstone. The stone was manufactured into travel sized metates, pestles and other hand tools. These tools have been found all along the Gila and Colorado River region for hundreds of miles. Neat

I generally find it challenging to get good snaps of rock art near the Gila. It's just too hot to hike the area in summer, and the low winter sun provides a problematic quagmire of harsh shadows and glare. I've been waiting quite a while for the right cloudy day to come along, and today was it! The single site I visited today, in terms of quality (entirely subjective, of course), quantity, and dimensions (BIG glyphs), is IMHO the single finest rock art site in all of Arizona. There is no shortage of other extraordinary sites, especially along the Gila and at AFNM, but this would be my number one. Some petroglyphs here are Archaic, and some Hohokam, but the majority are Patayan. First snap is of the Maze Archer taking aim at the Dragon. These are some big petroglyphs, Maze Archer is about 1.5 m tall. It wasn't easy paring 236 snaps down to 10. Mojave Desert - Nevada. Got to finally see these up close yesterday. Archaeologists believe these petroglyphs are affiliated with the Nuwuvi (Southern Pauite), Yuman and Patayan cultures. Pahranagat or Puebloan cultures also might have contributed. Hundreds of petroglyphs that some archaeologists believe to be up to 4000 years old sit in this canyon. There were quite a few images of Big Horn Sheep so along with water these were also hunting grounds for countless indigenous peoples who migrated through this area. Tacked on some extra hiking and cross-desert exploring to this adventure which made for a pretty awesome morning. Looking forward to going back to see more of this amazing historic area. Today a visit to a spectacular petroglyph site along the Gila River. The sheer number of petroglyphs here is nearly beyond belief. Some are Hohokam, some Patayan, and many are Archaic. It is a rather dry, sandy area, and some of the rock art has been worn via sand blasting. Other glyphs have been worn a bit thin by occasional high water levels of the Gila River. But all in all a spectacular site. At Sears Point, near the #Gila River in #Arizona, around two miles of basalt cliff edges are filled with ancient art. There are more than 2,000 panels of rock art, with an estimated 10,000 petroglyphs elements. The area also contains a number of geoglyphs and other features of #archaeological interest. #Archaeologists consider #SearsPoint one of the most significant collections of rock art in the American Southwest. This is due to the sheer density of petroglyphs, as well as the unique style of art. Many of the #petroglyphs have been attributed to the #Patayan culture tradition. Many different design elements are visible on these panels, including curvilinear, rectilinear, anthropomorphic, zoomorphic, abstract, and stylistic figures. In some places, flat basalt rocks were used for petroglyphs to mark trails. Several major petroglyph panels may be associated with Native American myths and legends. This area around Sears Point has been utilized for centuries by many cultures. Today, there are 15 tribes that claim cultural affiliation with the area.

A steep 1600' elevation gain hike today at one of my favorite destinations in west-central Arizona, the stomping grounds of Agave deserti var. simplex. This is in my opinion, a vastly under-appreciated agave, and today's destination is one of those places in which simplex is absolutely thriving in large numbers. Many specimens here bear a strong resemblance to Agave parryi. In addition to a host of wonderful plants, spectacular views here will take your breath away. Interesting day today as our wanderings led me to expand our general exploration of the Gila to an area north of Woolsey Peak, where we encountered two substantial petroglyph sites. These sites appear to include a mix of Archaic, Patayan, and Hohokam glyphs. Lots and lots of rock art here, tho none of the enormous, spectacular stuff found closer to the Gila. I forgot to post what we did yesterday! We have been going out to #coolidgearizona to do laundry since our washer bit it, and the power was out at the laundromat. So, we grabbed some McDonald's, got some drinks and went to the #casagranderuins #casagranderuinsnationalmonument and had a little food then did the walking tour. Museum is still closed, and that's fine (I have done it a dozen times since moving out here, I love it). I love #pueblogrande because they have the mockup living quarters, and the exposed ball courts but that's in PHX. My hands down favorite, hit it up everytime I'm in town, is Besh-ba-gowah up north, I go to the ruins whenever I can. Besh-ba-gowah ruins though were the Salado people, one of the main prehistoric cultures of the southwest. If you want to learn about the #hohokam there's a ton of great videos on #youtube that brake down trade, migration, building, pottery and farming. The Hohokam/Huhugam built this desert up, along with other ancient peoples, working with the seasonal rain and fauna that came to the area. We are just a stones throw away from another feat, #snaketown that was excavated and then covered back up, just northwest of here. If you were to stand atop of the main CG Ruin, you could easily see the smoke and fires of the people to the west and east, on the other side of the Gila river. Very interesting, beautiful and historic. In fact when we went hiking at a certain mountain park on the other side of the river I found pottery shards, I left them ofc! #casagrandenationalmonument is a FREE site, you can come to historic #coolidgearizona and see the ruins, go down to main street and hit some shops, have a lunch at any of the restaurants, head on back up the 79 (pass Florence cause they aren't doing shit out there for tourism) and head up to Globe/Miami/Superior and check out old hotels, graveyards and museums. #arizonahikingtrails #arizonamuseums #archaeology #southwestarchaeology #ancient #ancientsouthwest #historicroute66 #route66 #arizona #salado #mogollon #patayan #sinagua
This rock in the immediate foreground is a good example of a side by side comparison of various degrees of patina. The older petroglyph of an abstract design on the left has a heavier coating of patina than the newer petroglyph of the water bird on the right. As petroglyphs age, they start to recover the patina that was pecked off when they were created. Newer petroglyphs are thus brighter in appearance. This site is known to contain Patayan, Hohokam, and Archaic petroglyphs. The abstract design on the left is most likely Archaic and therefore dates to 6000 to 1000 BCE.
