It's taken me a good amount of time to get the courage to post this. I've always been afraid to bring it up because I was afraid that people would think I'm faking it again, but I'm slowly figuring out how to stop caring about those opinions. Because I'm not, and I know I'm not, and my friends know I'm not, my family knows I'm not, and my doctors know I'm not. I know this imposter syndrome is common in people with tics, and I do hear about that a lot in the community. But for me, it became so much more than second guessing. I'm not undermining what second guessing yourself can be like, because I know that can be really hard too. What I dealt with affected, and still affects, my entire life. It made it hard to focus in school, I struggled to feel like anyone actually knew me, I felt like I was being watched and judged everywhere I went, and I stopped going places as often because I didn't want to be in public alone. Yes, some people fake tics. But those people are in the MINORITY, by far. You can't tell if someone's faking just by looking at them or scrolling through their page. Due to this very much being the mindset of my eldest son I have never tried homeschooling him. I just knew it wouldn’t work, he wouldn’t even do anything during lockdown…….and for him it was one of the happiest times of his life. You see people with ASD/ADHD see things a little bit differently, and to him, home is home, his place of comfort and his safe place. We’ve tried everything. Alternative provisions. Home tutoring in the community. Part time schooling. Taylor made programs….nothing works. He is coming to a crucial time in his academic life and well being honest…..he’s not very academic. He’s clever for sure, but a big mainstream he struggles in, and he doesn’t fit the profile for specialist provisions 🤦🏼♀️ ⚠️ From what I have been told we aren’t alone ⚠️ There are thousands of children being failed by the authorities as there just aren’t places for such students. Bright, clever, functioning……but too overstimulated/anxious in a big mainstream school. We are embarking on a new journey of Home education with a difference, combining it with the subjects he can cope in, maybe another alternative provision and who knows maybe even a college? 🤷🏼♀️ I don’t quite know. “My name is Hermann, I was born in 1956 in the south-west of Germany. My first facial tics began at the age of 12, for example - blinking, grimacing and shaking my head. Many more motor tics were added in the course of my life, and the first vocal tics started at the age of 16. Diagnosis of my Tourette's disorder: 1986!!! Other comorbid challenges that were diagnosed: Anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders, depression, and social phobia. My personal journey, which cannot be transferred to other Tourette's sufferers: I am affected by pronounced food intolerances, a purely vegan diet with lots of raw food and abstaining from alcohol, caffeine and nicotine have reduced my Tourette's symptoms by more than 50%. I feel vital and do a lot of sports, for example - swimming, stand-up paddling, inline skating and cycling. I am now 67 years old (2024) and my Tourette's symptoms have reduced even further with age. I love travelling and meeting up with my friends. Wow, så var der pludselig gået 3 måneder, siden jeg sidst har forfattet noget 🐢 Problemet har ikke været lysten, eller at der ikke har været noget at berette. Nok nærmere det modsatte. Tankerne har været mange, og i alverdens afskygninger. Jeg har skrevet et utal af indlæg, dog er fællesnævneren, at de aldrig nåede længere end mine tanker. Tiden siden sidst, har været præget af store beslutninger, ny viden, frustrationer, glæde og håb. I dag, vil jeg holde mig til den ting som fylder mest for tiden; Vi har købt nyt hus, og solgt vores nuværende. . Vores helt igennem idylliske perle. Vores paradis. Stedet hvor 2 af vores børn er født. Stedet så fyldt med minder, på hver en millimeter. Maximillians fristed. Han er nok den som er mest knyttet til huset, og alt hvad det betyder. Han kender hver en afkrog, og ved hvordan hver en overflade føles og fører hen. Han er sønderknust. Sådan, helt dybt inde og så man ikke er i tvivl. Når det nye hus bliver nævnt af nogen, bliver han nonverbal i flere timer, og gemmer sig under sit velkendte tæppe. Og jeg kan godt forstå ham. For det er da også brutalt, at skulle flytte fra sit aller tryggeste sted, uden mulighed for at nedlægge VETO imod det. Om 4 dage får vi nøglerne til det nye hus. Om 2 måneder skal vi være ude af der hvor vi bor nu. Vi flytter kun 500m. væk og bor stadig ved den samme sø og skov. Men huset er anderledes. Lugtene er anderledes. Lyset falder anderledes i stuen, og gulvene knirker på en anden måde. Vi har truffet den umulige beslutning, da vi ved at det på sigt er bedst for vores familie. Pladsen her i perlen, er simpelthen blevet for lille, efter vi er blevet større. Men selvom min hjerne ved at det er den rigtige beslutning, er mit hjerte fyldt med tvivl. My character profile I had to write for school at age 6 "I am a girl. I am sad sometimes. I am funny to mummy and daddy." Basically my entire identity at that time was "I may be sad but at least I'm still funny" 💫 But why was I so sad at age 6? I was an undiagnosed Autistic child. I got into trouble all of the time for not following social rules or living up to the schools expectations. I just couldn't fit in and I was well aware of that. I also had some mild OCD traits at this time (2 years before it exploded overnight with other symptoms and severely disable me.) I would involuntarily visualise blobs flying around outside and had to avoid coming into contact with them otherwise "bad things would happen." I also had an uncomfortable tic develop at this time, my second ever tic (first was at age 4.) I didn't really understand why my body was doing this and I was very confused, but I rationalised it and tried to convince myself it was normal. Some people assume children can't think for themselves, but I remember the exact thoughts and feelings I had as a neurodivergent 6 year old. It was not always an easy time. Shortly after this, I went into a period of existentialism, where I would cry because I didn't understand why the world existed or what the purpose of life was. At age 7, my dad would give me Professor Brian Cox videos on the universe to watch (just the right thing for a 7 year old lol.) This was because it was the only way my parents could think of to soothe my existentialism and it did actually help - it gave me some answers. At 7, my school contacted my parents and told them they thought I had learning difficulties because I wasn't progressing with other kids. I was put in a social group to help with my social skills and was put in english and maths groups to get my grades up. My school reports always said I was shy and would write too fast. By age 8, my parents were told by my friends mum (who was a teacher) that she thinks I may be Autistic, but I didn't get the formal Autism (ASD) diagnosis until age 12 (first year of secondary school.) So let’s talk about toileting and Tourette’s. As part of my recent bathroom adaptations fitted was a special toilet that sprays water to clean you after you’ve been and then it will dry you too. Due to my motor tics I really struggle to wipe myself. This can mean I don’t get sufficiently clean, or get waste on my hand which then can get on other body parts with the tics. So the OT who assessed and put forward the bathroom plans included this toilet that washes and dries you. Only been home about 9 days and already using the toilet at home is already cleaner and safer and less tricky. And less awkward and more dignity kept for me.
