The Twingo is the car that got me into cars. Being driven through France on our annual camping holiday as an 8 year old I noticed a car with a cute face that I'd never seen in Ireland. Inside our Renault Savannah my parents explained that Renault didn't sell Twingos in right hand drive and so I spent the whole holiday looking at as many as I could. 32 years later I still think it's the cutest car that ever been made, utilitarian and fun in equal measure. If you’ve found yourself bemoaning the planned obsolescence of modern cars with their fiddly screens and finicky sensors, then oh boy have I got the vehicle for you. The 1991 Lada 2107 1300, known to us Westerners as the Riva, is about as archaic as any vehicle assembled in the last half a century. The Riva has become one of the most iconic symbols of the Soviet Union, equal parts derided and begrudgingly admired by those of us who have never known life behind the Iron Curtain. The car, or at least its roots, began in the 1960s as the Fiat 124 saloon. But while the original 124 was an advanced and sporty design, the reverse engineering that the Soviets did when they acquired the licensing to the design quickly flushed out any such characteristics. They needed a car that was cheap and simple to build, reasonably roomy and easy to operate and maintain, and durable - and truthfully, that really is it. The 1300 designation means that this Lada is powered by a carbureted 1.3 liter 4-cylinder making 64hp, complete with a crank start backup in case the starter failed. The thick, heavy steel that the car’s builder, VAZ, opted for did make the Lada slower, but more importantly, tougher. You got manual steering, a manual transmission, a manual choke, a live rear axle, and aluminum rear drum brakes. The car was loud, rough, uncomfortable, unrefined, probably not all that safe, and largely devoid of modern features. That said, the posh 2107 trim did get a tachometer and headrests that the basic 2105 lacked. Performance figures aren’t readily available, but the extreme slowness of the Lada didn’t matter, because roadways in the Eastern Bloc were notoriously poor. Also, when you keep in mind that owning *any* car in the USSR was a luxury (for which you had to wait) the aforementioned roads meant that these cars had to handle punishing use over the long term with minimal complex upkeep. And in that they succeeded, making them something of a cockroach in the automotive world. The Soviet Union collapsed the same year this particular Lada was built, but the model stayed in production in Egypt largely unchanged until 2012, with roughly 18 million built when all was said and done.

If you go through history, almost every country has made a people’s car. It is a way to push a nation towards economic growth and an idea of consumerism. Over the years, everyone has given it a try and succeeded. The Americans were technically the first to join the party. Japanese have made it, we have made it, and the French and Germans have given it a go as well. But Italians could well have stolen the show for making small, practical cars. Over the years, we have moved far away from small cars. They have gone away from the simple example of being easy to use and maintain. Most manufacturers are trying to mount as much as they can in the tiny cubicle. Of course, Italy isn’t necessarily the first place you would think of for small and practical cars. The country is more famous for Pagannis and Ferraris. What makes the Fiat 500 notable is the purpose for which designer Dante Giacossa conceived it. The idea was not to sell a cheap car but to have a vehicle that could be serviced easily in the more rural servicing. With its 275 mm width, it was designed to be parked for the big city spots. To make it cheaper and lighter, the roof was made of fabric. It came at a time when Volkswagen was loudly screaming with the Beetle and the Mini was a common sight among the most fashionable people as well. More recently, all three have become a fashion statement. But back then, it was a simple rear twin-cylinder engine of 479 cc producing 13 bhp. Hence, the name 500 was a no-brainer. All the mechanical trivia is good. What the 500 did was it made people’s cars multi-purpose. It had variants with no sunroof, a sports version from Abarth, and an estate version or purpose of making it a van. So, it revolutionised what a common man’s car could be. From the point of view of the market, it suddenly made the car world a little cheaper. The Fiat 500 is a precursor to the Fiat Panda, the Suzuki Swift, the Volkswagen UP! and the Pegeuot 205. Test fitting the body for the Fiat 500f in 1/24 from Tamiya. I like that this body doesn't have any window trims and comes with masks to help paint the windows instead. The body is primed in light grey, painted in cockpit green and then clear coated in Tamiya LP9 and polished. Wheels are painted in white with the stock chrome hubs. The final unofficial Driveway Report awards have come to an end with the last award going to this VW. The award is for “Most Unique” Correct me if I’m wrong, I get corrected all the time like on the Mercury post. This is a combination of two VW kit cars. The front half of a early 40s Ford on the bonnet. Then a pickup bed kit on the back half. The bodywork was pretty good, I didn’t find any bad paint work and it appears detailed fresh and ready to use.
