Pikes Peak State Park is south of McGregor in Clayton County, Iowa, and features a 500-foot bluff (Pikes Peak Scenic Overlook) above the Upper Mississippi River opposite the confluence of the Wisconsin River. The park is operated by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. It is nearly 1,000 acres in extent. A half-mile wooden boardwalk currently takes you to the picturesque Bridal Veil Falls. Like Pikes Peak in Colorado, the park is named after US Army officer and explorer Zebulon Pike (1779–1813), who visited the area in 1805 during his first expedition, camping just downstream near Clayton, Iowa, on September 6 and across the river near Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, the next three nights. Pike climbed the bluff on September 5, looking for a suitable location for a fort and marked what would become known as Pikes Peak because it was “level on the top, having a spring in the rear, and commanding a view of the country around.”

A few weeks ago I went to go visit a beautiful state park in Iowa called Pikes Peak. The overlook at Pikes Peak was beautiful and lightly colored with autumn leaves, you could see lovely views of the Mississippi River and I could show off my skill of spelling out M-I-S-S-I-S-S-I-P-P-I as fast as I could. My partner and I had a wonderful time and it was fun crossing between Iowa and Wisconsin state lines on a daily basis (Pikes Peak is close to the border) I’d like to make it a bucket list to explore many more state parks in the future. Almost 4 hrs we were on road to see these beautiful fall colors. We started our own to explore the trails and got lost in the wilderness (thanks to my map reading). We backtracked our footsteps to be on trail and met our friends.. bigger the better. Again, we got lost in our trail and its after sunset. We reached in a parking 5 miles away from where we parked. Thanks to a humble family who gave us a ride on back of their truck.
