Artificiality and work have steadily increased since its inception and are known as culture: in domesticating animals and plants man necessarily domesticated himself. We are but a temporary infestation, Mother Nature bides her time while humanity bathes in hubris and tuxedos, ignorant of their fabricated self importance. But she will rule long after we follow Rome’s footsteps, as ego trumps reason endlessly in modern society. Sling Styles 💥 Here are three different sling styles to choose from. The staff sling is very large and powerful - capable of hurling fist-sized rocks. Staff slings were used historically in castle warfare and must have been terrifying for foot soldiers and cavalry. The shepherd sling fits in the palm of the hand and can reach distances of 300 yards with golfball sized stones. Some of our shots easily cleared the river. The shotgun sling can hurl multiple smaller stones for hunting flocks of geese and ducks in flight, giving it practical wilderness survival applications . All slings take a lot of practice to aim with proficiently. I’m so grateful to have the chance to spend a month out tracking and taking @trackercertification evaluations in Southern California! . The past couple days were spent in the mountains of Cuyama County, north of LA, trailing black bears and mule deer through the high desert terrain. It’s rugged country up here, and I learned ton about how animals use the landscape by following their trails through the sandy, rocky soil. . A major highlight was trailing this large male black bear over several ridges to a den—given that he likely weighed 400-500 pounds, it was amazing how small the opening was!

Flock tip! 🪶 Give your egg shells to your flock— The ladies need plenty of calcium to create healthy, strong egg shells for laying. We save all our egg shells 🍳 in a paper bag under the sink. Once it’s full we crush them up and feed them right back to them. They love it as a treat and we love that it’s full circle ⭕️ 🥚 Crushing the shells before offering is a must to discourage eating their own eggs. my first pine needle basket!! 🌲 i had the opportunity to learn long leaf pine needle baskets last week with Laura Roscoe and this is my finished basket with lid! i really enjoyed the process and Laura's way of instruction and will definitely make more of these in the future. i had the opportunity to meet Tamara Wilder @wilder_tamara last week and chat about cordage and pine nuts. i was lucky to be able to trade some of my crafts for these pine nuts (Pinus sabiniana) and i used one as a bead on the handle of my basket lid! now the southeastern long leaf pine and the west coast foothill pine have come together to showcase some of the enduring qualities of the Pinus genus. even the mushrooms came out to take a look 🍄 #rivercanerendezvous #earthskills #pineneedlebasket

What’s he teaching? 🧺Intro to Willow Basketry Part 1 and 2 These two classes cover the foundations of European-style willow weaving. You’ll learn to weave a small, round basket using the simplest weaving techniques. You’ll learn to create a sturdy base, add sides to the basket, and finish your basket with a strong border. At the end of the class, you’ll have all the skills to weave your own baskets and begin to explore more advanced willow weaving techniques. Before industrial plastics, we held everything in baskets. Willow basketry is a foundational practice of belonging in Colorado. Creating good willow for weaving is a multi-year process, requiring tending willow patches through the seasons and building a relationship with the plants we harvest from. 🧶Spinning Yarn and Thread with a Drop Spindle Drop spindles are one of the oldest tools known to humanity. Every culture around the world developed some sort of spindle that was specialized to the locally available plant or animal fiber. Spindles are a quick and easy way to begin spinning your own yarn and thread. This demo will cover the basics of spinning with wool and alpaca. Students will get an introduction to the theory of spinning, and the mechanics of a drop spindle. Ever since I was lucky enough to experience two otters playing around in the water on my canoeing trip last summer, I’ve been fascinated by these semi-aquatic hunters. Otter is a great teacher I must say - at least if you are willing to listen. Whenever I enter new areas where I want to stay for a while I have begun to look for track and sign of otter along the waters edge. As the main food source for otters comes from fish - often of a decent size - any spoor from otters tells me I can expect to catch fish here. If I find feeding stations I might even be able to get an idea about the types of fish. Are there large scales suggesting carpe, or only small scales suggesting perch and pike. However, otters don’t only consume fish - crayfish, freshwater snails and freshwater clams are also on the menu. By finding what otter leaves behind he tells me what I should be looking for to sustain myself. It will even catch a spark untreated from a high carbon steel knife or saw. Fantastic coal extender. And it makes a great smudge to drive off mosquitoes around camp. The unessential tends to be stripped away, allowing you to discover what is real and necessary for you at this time. Some have quested to sort out important decisions, some to empower underused gifts, and some to shed the complicating “chaff” that modern life bestows. Some of our questers repeat the quest every few years. Like most significant learning events, the quest does require sacrifice and usually has challenges that tend to be unique for each quester. It is not an experience to undertake out of mere curiosity because it requires a significant commitment. However, the strength you find within yourself, and your willingness to go to the edge of the unknown to learn, create an experience that you can draw on for a lifetime. The final result of my Dogbane fiber processing!!! Firstly I must say I love the reddish hue this fiber has along with how flexible this piece of cordage is in comparison to Yucca or willow cordage that I have made in the past. I recently experimented with making "dandelion honey," after carefully harvesting and removing the petals from a basket of these gorgeous spring beauties. No actual honey is involved, but the resulting syrup is delicious and can be used for similar treats. After straining an infusion made with just the petals (as seen in the photo), I added sugar and lemon juice and proceeded to boil down the resulting syrup until it was a little runnier than honey. It is incredible on toast and in tea. I loved making this pouch with the book -fish tanning from @lottastannery Lotta Rahme. I used tea tanned salmon with some scraps of chamoise. I really needed to work with the salmon leather because some mice thought it was a nice meal. this was my first herb-walk kinda circle I ever held two summers ago at the peak of heat around the summer solstice. We learned about the healing qualities of the sun and how it is mirrored in plants and in our bodies (from the macro to the micro we are in a mirror hall), we meditated, contemplated, drank tea and identified some plants and had a sweet day all over. As a future (psycho-)therapist (which is a term I find quite narrow and which mirrors the prevailing separation of body/mind/spirit in the medical field) I cannot and won't exclude the interconnectedness of all life and our embeddedness in this earth first and foremost.

The slow creep of sea-level rise and the onset of global climate change, it appears that humanity will face much greater challenges as it learns to adapt to shifting environmental conditions that IT has helped set in motion. In many ways, the Anthropocene is rooted in a growing realization that we are in a state of ecological crisis that defies our control. The question now is: What are we going to do about it? Leveraging technology “to tame nature” has never quite seemed to work out how we planned. At least on a local level, nature has a way of pushing back: Just look at Henry Ford’s failed rubber plantations in the Amazon or Chernobyl’s increasingly wild landscape that grew out of nuclear disaster. Perhaps the Anthropocene’s greatest challenge will be forcing us to think beyond our strictly human needs and to understand those of the ecological systems in which we are embedded. buckskin shorts!! 🦌🎉 after successfully making the buckskin vest, i had the confidence and momentum to cut up 2 more of my precious hand made buckskins and give the shorts a go! i LOVE how they turned out!! features: a button fly with whitetail deer antler and bone buttons and my makers mark stitched onto the back pockets. i decided a regular belt would not do, so i bark tanned another deer hide and made this belt that i sewed to a vintage wooden belt buckle that my brother @jerstinc gave me (more on the belt in another post)! the hide that makes up the front of these pants is from a deer i hunted. i believe i have the buckskin sewing fever for real now! thanks again to @buckeyeandbeebalm for helping me with the pattern and showing me the steps to put these together, i couldn't have made such tailored shorts without your help ❤️! we folded and traced the outline of an existing pair of shorts onto tracing paper that i transferred to the leather. #buckskinshorts #buckskinclothing #hidetanning #barktan #deerkindred #earthskills
