Yesterday our Village Volunteers were hard at work preparing materials for an upcoming wigwam build. They were doing the strangely satisfying task of peeling bark off of cedar trees. To date they have peeled 45 cedar trees this year! Afterwards, the volunteers got an intro to wigwam anatomy and how their cedar tree poles would actually be used in the new build. . ALLES HAT SEINE ZEIT… ….und braucht sie auch. Seit die ersten Blätter vom Himmel purzelten, war ich wie jedes Jahr bereit zu sammeln. Aber erst mal geduldig hin und wieder hoch schauen in die Spitzen der auserkorenen Bäume. Und dann war es letzte Woche endlich soweit, ich war sicher, dass nun der richtige Zeitpunkt gekommen war. So fuhr ich nach der Dachsbande einen kleinen Umweg durch einen nahen Wald. Parallel zur Straße verläuft ein Radweg unter mächtigen Lärchen. Und ja, der Tisch (der Radweg) war gedeckt, sodaß ich nur noch die Lärchennadeln, die den Weg dicht an dicht bedeckten, zusammenschieben musste. Wie ihr ja sicher wisst, ist die Lärche der einzige Nadelbaum, der im Winter seine Nadeln verliert und nebenbei noch ein ganz formidabler Zunder ist! Er ist quasi der erste sehr feine Moderator, den ich einsetze, wenn es mir auf irgendeine Weise gelungen ist eine Glut zu erzeugen. Danach nehme ich gerne trockene Kräuterstängel z.B. von der Brennnessel. Dann feine trockene Äste oder geschnitzte Federn aus Vollholz. Dann erst gespaltene schlanke Hölzer. Wenn es jetzt nicht brennt, habe ich etwas verkehrt gemacht. Sind die Bedingungen gut, trockenes Material, sommerlich warm….kann man sich auch schon mal den einen oder anderen Moderator verkneifen oder gegen ein anderes vergleichbares Material tauschen. Nach 5 Minuten Arbeit waren also 10 Liter Lärchennadeln gesammelt, die nach dem Trocknen genug Zunder für unzählige Feuer aus der Hand fürs ganze nächste Jahr ergeben. Ausgebreitet auf einem alten Mähdreschersieb lasse ich die regennassen Nadeln vortrocknen, bis ich sie dann final in die Heizung hänge. I always make the small string loop for the lower limb so tight that it holds onto the lower tip by itself. This is usually 13 or 14 twists. . CHARRED (VERKOHLTER) TINDER FUNGUS (ZUNDERSCHWAMM)… ….haben wir aus einem alten von Pilzkäferlarven zerfressenem Baumpilz (Fomes Fomentarius). Natürlich hatte die geschlüpften Käfer den Pilz schon verlassen. Die Scheiben, die wir vornehmlich aus den Pilzröhren geschnitten haben waren ca 4-5 mm stark. Auch hier seht ihr auf dem zweiten Bild sehr schön die Schwelgasfahne, die aus dem Rauchloch aufsteigt. Nachdem sie sich entzündet hatte, konnten wir genau beobachten, wie die Flamme immer kleiner wurde und schlußendlich ganz erlosch. Vorgang beendet, angespitzten Stock reingedrückt und Dose aus dem Feuer geholt. Abkühlen lassen, Charred Fungus fertig! Am nächsten Tag haben Anton und die anderen Jungs damit direkt unser kleines Lagerfeuer gestartet. Klasse Jungs, so geit dat! This bow is a Perry Reflex bow. Its laminates were glued under pre-tension. The design of the bow is a hybrid of a longbow and a flatbow. I developed the design from historical models based on digital models. The upper limb is Elm with Hickory backing. Lower limb Hackberry with Birch backing. There is no visual difference between a bow covered with bamboo or hickory and a Perry Bow covered with the same material. In the Perry Bow, the laminates are glued with pre-tension. The Perry bow thus stores more energy. As a result, the noticeable difference for the archer is mainly the higher arrow speed. . This bow had a 3" stringfollow because I shot it very intensively for three weeks last year in extremely damp conditions. The surface treatment was not designed for this. After heat treatment of both limbs, the stringfollow was reduced to approx. 1" and it gained three pounds. Even the area with the replaced branch in the limb survived the heat treatment well. Want to come make baskets with us? We are hosting a free basket making workshop in Spring City, Utah September 15-16. This workshop is best for people over age 14, but anyone with strong hands and a long-ish attention span is welcome. The process is tough on your hands. Please text me to RSVP so I have enough table space. You need to be there both days. On the 15th (Friday evening), we will harvest, cut, and strip willows. On the 16th (Saturday), we will weave baskets. There is a supplies list on the flier, but you will especially want your own pair of hand pruners and work gloves. Dress for the weather. The #apachethrowingstar is a primitive hunting weapon that is very easy to manufacture. I think it could be quite effective for small animals. All you need is some string and a good knife. It's even easier with a saw. You'll find the rest in the woods. I tested the Apache throwing star on an empty can. I still have to practice aiming. You don't have to throw hard. Just by it's mass and rotation, that thing hits hard. What happens when it hits, you can see in the video between the pictures. The video is in 6th place. This is for demo purposes only. No real use. Natural shelter build. Creating a natural shelter in a mainly pine environment. Using bracken as thatch, nice and deep to make it waterproof. A solid day's sawing and axing wood. This is an Elm wood longbow with bamboo backing and with an elliptical cross section that I shot very excessively in humid conditions, developing more than 2 inches of stringfollow. In fact, after unbracing, it was almost 3 inches last winter. I heat treated both limbs for 15 minutes each and they are now extremely straight again. I think "Nice Hunter" will perform better than before. Today I combined the cage I recently made with a trigger and set up a bird trap. I am very satisfied with the result. If you take a close look at the video, you will realize that a light stroke over the bait stick is enough to trigger the trap. So the trap was sensitive enough for an animal to set it off, and at the same time stable enough not to set it off accidentally. On the following pictures you can see the structure in detail. Die Herstellung einer Schnur aus Naturfasern erscheint auf den ersten Blick genauso sinnvoll (oder eben nicht) wie das Feuermachen ohne Streichholz. Kann man doch überall kaufen, wozu der Aufwand? Weil unsere Naturverbindung dadurch gestärkt wird - die von Kindern genauso wie die von Erwachsenen: 1. Wir gehen hinaus und streifen in der Natur umher auf der Suche nach geeigneten Pflanzen. 2. Wir betrachten die Pflanzen aufmerksamer als sonst, weil sie bestimmte Kriterien erfüllen müssen. 3. Wir be-greifen die Pflanzen: Stängel abschneiden, Blätter wegzupfen, Stängel ausklopfen, Fasern abziehen, Fasern zum Trocknen aufhängen... Wir kennen die Pflanzen danach sehr genau. 4. Wir entwickeln ein Gespür für die Beschaffenheit der Fasern und lernen, wie wir daraus eine Schnur herstellen. 5. Die Natur wird zu unserem Zuhause, wenn wir wissen, wo wir Materialien (und Unterschlupf, Nahrung...) finden und wie wir uns versorgen können. 6. Wir fühlen uns beschenkt von der Natur, weil sie alles bereitstellt, was wir zum Leben brauchen. Dieses Prinzip gilt für jedes Naturhandwerk und für die Wilde Küche. Wir docken damit an der ältesten Verbindung an, die wir Menschen tief in uns gespeichert haben. So "primitiv" es für manche wirken mag, es ist der direkte Zugang zu einer Verbindung, die wir fast verloren haben.
