I met owner Maura Clare last year in Dublin for coffee and I was fascinated by the story behind the brand and by Maura herself. She recommended that I sample @smugglingnun in a pisco style cocktail @ragtraderbopeepnyc. We found Fiona from Dundalk behind the bar and she was only too happy to oblige. In summer 2022 I took part in Traces: Stories of Migration, a textile project by the artist Lucy Orta. I couldn’t have imagined at the start what an enriching experience it was going to be. Our group explored family migration stories. The person behind my piece was the Great Grandfather I never met who emigrated from Russia, now Poland and settled in Mile End, barely a mile from where I live now. He was a tailor in the rag trade or schmatta business. My piece uses schmatta, which literally translates as rag - these were spare pieces of my textile designs appliquéd onto an upcycled suit. A photo of my great grandfather is on the reverse using a photo transfer method. The collaborators and researchers works are currently on display at the new London College of Fashion Gallery in the Designed for Life show, LCF’s 1st exhibition at the new East Bank site, Stratford Olympic Park. Alongside the artworks Lucy created textile portraits of each artist. It’s the south side of #FlindersLane looking west from #SwanstonStreet. Everything is under the 99ft #heightlimit (the limit on the big streets was higher, 132ft). Also helps that the other side is still low too, so in summer the sun gets right in !

A bit late in posting this. Last week I attended a digital embroidery masterclass with @lisscookeembroidery at @handandlocklondon I had such an inspiring and informative day training in Wilcom and learning new embroidery skills and techniques. I can’t wait to put into practice all that I learned, I’m just brimming with lots of new design ideas. One of my many design jobs was around the corner from @handandlocklondon , on Eastcastle Street, once the hub of the rag trade. The design studio where I worked is now an Art gallery, surrounded by eateries. It was great to reminisce and visit my old stomping ground. I can’t say I miss the overcrowded tube commute though. Rag Trade / She was 16, unmarried, and in the family way when her family shipped her off to relatives in the tar paper farmhouse New World to save face in the two up, two down Old. She miscarried in the crossing. She was picked up from the CPR station in Bolton. It was nothing like the Bolton she knew. They headed out far into the country to one hundred acres, a wood lot, a saltbox barn, various outbuildings, a shrill windmill, the sounds and smells of cattle, and thunder from an incoming storm. The light made the farmhouse glint silver, the wood was that weathered. She was put into service immediately and slept separate in a space the size of a coffin just off the kitchen. She ran away to Toronto after stealing the egg money. He was only an uncle by marriage but he wouldn’t leave her alone. She found work on Spadina in the rag trade. She wrote to her brother who was still in a convalescent home recovering from wounds suffered in the war to end all wars. His return letter found her in lodging in The Ward. It was this way she found out that she’d voluntarily left to work in service since the men were now coming home and able to work once more. She never corrected him. She met a lodger who was from Denton. He was working at Wrigley’s as a millwright. It was good money but he missed home. He’d come to Toronto before the war and ended up in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. They started seeing each other. Her brother eventually left the convalescent home and was trained to work in the office of a spinning mill in Hyde. He was on his way to see United play when he thought he saw his sister get on the same tram in town. She had two little’uns with her. He noticed a wedding ring. He hadn’t heard from her since he’d left the home. His letters remained unanswered. She didn’t see him. The tram was crowded. The kids were being nowty. She looked cross. The rain fell like a million guillotines. Well the bullet has been bitten and we can't turn back from Edinburgh now but we still need your help.
