“DissemiNation” 2022. Single channel digital video. “DissemiNation” builds off of postcolonial theorist Homi Bhabha’s essay of the same name to offer a critical perspective on nation building and migrant experiences as they navigate state bureaucracy. The caseworker, Ms. White, recites texts and speeches by political figures such as Joseph Goebbels, Benito Mussolini, and Donald Trump. Immigrant, Azadeh, conversely narrates poems, literature and anthems characterized by romantic visions of the Nation-State. Eleh’s film highlights the precarity of citizenship, and the structural violence that occurs in the liminal space of immigration procedures. In this two channel installation, Eleh performs four intergalactic characters in a parody of game shows like “Jeopardy!” that expose the language and aesthetics used by the alt-right to lure new recruits and spread their ideologies. The contestants experience unfair (dis)advantages and racist microaggressions, while responding to phrases, images, and memes sourced across digital platforms. The work simultaneously critiques structures that uphold white supremacy and gender norms, while engaging in ethnofuturist discourses to disrupt the very same structures. 💥Centre A is pleased to announce a fictional ᴡᴇʙ art project with artist 𝐑𝐚𝐡 𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐡 (@elehrah): 𝙰𝚝𝚎𝚕𝚒𝚎𝚛 𝙰𝚍𝚟𝚒𝚜𝚘𝚛. 𝘼𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩: 𝙰𝚝𝚎𝚕𝚒𝚎𝚛 𝙰𝚍𝚟𝚒𝚜𝚘𝚛 is a fictional web art project that is presented in the format of an Etsy shop. Inspired by 𝐑𝐚𝐡 𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐡’s character work, the shop offers a variety of playful and cheeky gifts. Objects include a magic 8 ball that shares the namesake of the gift shop, along with three glass blown White Tears, Periphery Art book and many others. In addition to the web project, some of the items are available at Centre A's gallery for the duration of the online performance. 𝘼𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙨𝙩: 𝐑𝐚𝐡 𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐡 is a video, digital and performance artist. She has been exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally at spaces including: Venice Biennale (ECC Palazzo Mora), Nuit Blanche (Toronto), Vienna Art Week, Carleton University Art Gallery (Ottawa), Williams College Museum of Art (Williamstown, Massachusetts), SOMA Art Space Berlin, Onassis Cultural Center (Athens, Greece) amongst others. MEMBER SPOTLIGHT This week we recognize Minoosh Zomorodinia, and her almost twenty-year practice as a photographer and interdisciplinary artist. "Informed by my cultural background, religion, and politics, my work investigates the concept of “Self,” specifically how it relates to the environment. Inspired by nature, I borrow from rituals including walking, sometimes infusing humor. I integrate contradictory concepts into pieces that visualize struggles of the “self” by inserting my body into these moments of time and space. Recently I employed walking as a catalyst for my sculptures, which reference nomadic lifestyles, as well as colonialism. By tracking my paths using technology, I claim the ownership of the land, while representing a changed perception in the digital age and addressing transformation of memories into actual physical space absurdly."
