The campaign for a real Living Wage has ensured hundreds of thousands of workers are earning a wage they can live on, not just the government minimum. But millions of low-paid workers are also struggling to get the hours they need to make ends meet. Wales, in particular, is one of the nations impacted most by work insecurity. Across the nations and regions of the UK, Wales stands out as one of the areas where job insecurity is most prevalent, alongside the North East (24%) and South West (21%) of England. But over recent years, the cumulative impact of high inflation has led to sharp rises in the real living wage rate and this is now placing unprecedented pressure not only on college finances, but also on the integrity and fairness of pay structures. Pay scales are being squeezed, and pay grade differentials eroded. Some colleges are now questioning whether their commitment to the RLW is sustainable, even though they recognise it’s socially and morally the right thing to do. We are delighted to welcome Vice Principal, Louise Brown FCIPD from Wigan & Leigh College and University Centre to share the proactive approach they’ve taken over recent years to diffuse the risk and potential impact of what some describe as a “ticking time bomb”, and embed a people-centred culture which has led the college to now being recognised as an employer of choice in the sector. In 2023, Louise won the prestigious Leader of the Year Award at the Greater Manchester Good Employment Charter Awards in recognition of her work in driving culture change at the college, resulting in improving staff retention rates, excellent recruitment practices and becoming an employer of choice in the sector. Some of you might have seen on stories last week that Sprouts was awarded the Bristol Life Awards 2024 Retail Winner trophy on Wednesday evening! 🥳 This is a big step for Sprouts and I am so proud of everything we have achieved since 2020 when we began selling house plants from our spare bedroom with that first panicked purchase of some plants on my credit card. Tom and I would drive around Bristol on our weekends (we were both working full time during Covid) and deliver to our wonderful customers, many of whom still shop with us today or have become great friends.
