Today I will be reviewing a sophomore album that still slumps: girl in red ”I’M DOING IT AGAIN BABY!” 4/12/2024 One of the biggest acts in the indie scene over the past decade, girl in red has certainly drawn a pretty big fan base thanks to her relatability and melodic pop ideas. Unfortunately, I have never found much appeal in her work to date. Her most popular songs have always struck me as just run-of-the-mill indie pop. Her debut album in 2021 provided some interesting discussions of mental health, but ultimately the music just strayed a bit generic of the indie scene. I did have some faith her major label debut though. From what I can tell, “I’M DOING IT AGAIN BABY!” suffers from a lot of the same issues as it’s predecessor. The songwriting is pretty hit-or-miss. When compared to her last album though, girl in red certainly draws back a lot of the harder rock edge in favor of a much glitzier, swaggier pop sound. This can be both a bit of a good and a bad thing, with some tracks really being pretty solid pop bangers and others just sounding completely derivative. There is a much more distinct focus on mental health issues though, which certainly helps to bolster the songwriting a bit. I think ultimately, girl in red still cannot seem to keep things consistent in this album’s short run. She certainly has some potential and the songwriting can be pretty good at times, but outside of a a few quality tracks, there is not much that I am finding worthwhile here.
