Inspired by a narrative of love and resilience, we had the honor of contributing the main title sequence for #weweretheluckyones . Based on a true story, the #hulu series paints a portrait of the Kurcs – a Polish Jewish family fighting to survive the Holocaust and ultimately reunite. Our team sought to go beyond the conventional boundaries of a main title sequence. We aimed to craft a genuine work of art, intricately weaving the Kurc family’s narrative into each frame. It was crucial to capture their resilience and profound familial bond, not just their struggle. Special thanks to collage artists Barbara Gibson and Marta Kochanek for providing the stylistic foundation for our initial boardomatic. Echo. Premiered on Disney+ and Hulu in early January. Marvel’s new story is about a girl called Maya Lopez. She is a complex character. Torn between two worlds, two lives, two families and at the same time is discovering an inner resource that is both powerful, mysterious and scary. The idea behind this main title was magical realism where two worlds would intersect, shrouded with shadows and subtle hand gestures. The final composition for each shot was a back-and-forth dialogue between the sourced footage, show footage, original imagery, and the initial concept sketch. It was quite often a moving collage of all three types of footage. Each shot had to feel alive and deep; that there was a whole world within each moment, sometimes multiple worlds. To achieve this required a lot of layering but also some clever uses of CG to either create parts of a world that we could move a camera through or environments into which we could project existing footage—giving a person’s face some shape and subtle rotation or a landscape a sense of grandeur and space. Color plays an important part in striking the final tone. The duality is expressed in warm, earthly and nature-inspired tones that are mixed with rusty and less rich ones. This past weekend I attended a main titles workshop @sarofsky_design We were given briefs for the new Goosebumps show. They wanted the sequence to be for a more mature audience, as the show deals with heavier topics like generational family trauma. I wanted to explore fear and how it relates to the five senses. I wanted the viewer to be able to feel like they are in the sequence. I wanted it to look and feel cold, eerie, spooky, and unsettling. I wanted the sequence to have a feeling like you are being haunted, whether it is by an actual ghost or generational family trauma. I really wanted to play with texture, noise, mist, and a monochrome look. I also wanted there to be flashes on screen of an inverted version of the pictures like a film camera would have. These parts would only be onscreen for a couple of frames. I had an absolute blast this weekend! On Saturday we spent all day discussing the industry and talking about our ideas. Then, on Sunday, we spent all day creating them. I made 10 style frames and did a small test to show everyone how the inverted photos would be used. The Hospitals of the University of Pennsylvania @pennmedicine are consistently recognized nationally and internationally for excellence in health care so when Josh Champagne and Brian Krenzer from Cult Collective @cultcollectiveltd briefed us on this expansive assignment we knew the stakes were high. The ask was to distill complex offerings and services into simple illustrations that would work across media and platforms. Optical illusions can be challenging to imagine and pull off in illustrations and are even harder to build when they need to exist in a “real” space. Since we were working with glass in CG we had to identify the boundaries for how far we could push reality before the image broke. When working in CG there is infinite freedom in one sense, but that freedom exists in tension with the viewer’s expectations. Read more about the process in our case study.
