If the sumptuous interiors of Nos. 69-71 Brook Street (today the Savile Club) evoke anything, it’s a Newport ‘cottage’ decorated at the height of the Gilded Age. It’s worth remembering that three of the biggest of Newport’s ‘big guns’ - Marble House, Ochre Court and The Breakers - were built and furnished during exactly the same period (give or take a couple of years on either side) that William Bouwens van der Boijen was working for the Burnses in Mayfair. Moving from the ballroom into what is now the dining room but was formerly the first-floor drawing room, the visitor remains in the reign of the young Louis XV. Clive Aslet (one of my all-time heroes) points out that the almost oppressively opulent style, so popular with the transatlantic super-rich during the 1890s, was in danger of becoming over-exposed, and consequently less fashionable. As the twentieth century got underway, the taste of the truly chic began to gravitate towards the cool classicism of Louis XVI. It’s certainly interesting to speculate what Mewès and Davis (of whom more anon) would have made of the same spaces had they tackled them around 1905 or 1910. Aslet asserts that some - all? - of the boiseries, which are offset by gilded columns of mauve-grey fleur de pêche marble, are genuine, not reproduction. I was tickled to read, on the club’s own website, that when, in 1927, the Savile moved to new premises in the former townhouse of Walter and Mary Burns, one of the first acts of its members was to repaint the ballroom brown in an attempt to subdue what they held to be its feminine frivolity. Thankfully, attitudes changed and, eventually, the noted architect and decorator Dennis Lennon, who himself belonged to the Savile, was commissioned to restore it to its former glory. In yesterday’s post, I compared the ballroom to a giant stage set. It therefore pleases me to learn that Lennon was for many years a theatrical designer at Glyndebourne. On Brook Street, he opted for a scintillating scheme of ethereal blue accented by a gold so white it reads as silver. I assume I’m not the only one whose thoughts immediately turn to Chips Channon’s legendary ‘Amalienburg’ dining room in Belgrave Square (although that, I gather, was a much more vibrant shade of blue). The finishing touch is supplied by a set of splendid crystal chandeliers (see yesterday’s post). I understand that these were actually donated by Savilian Sir William Orpen. Arguably less celebrated than his contemporaries Sargent, Boldini and de László, Orpen is nevertheless one of my favourite artists. When I visualise his Edwardian and post-Edwardian portraits, I call to mind bold colours and dark backgrounds from which his Society sitters emerge as if spot-lit. In 1884, No. 69 Brook Street, which had been built in the early eighteenth century but partly remodelled and completely refaced in the mid-nineteenth, was purchased by the American banker Walter Hayes Burns. A few years later, he merged it with the adjacent property, No. 71, which he razed to the ground and then reconstructed from scratch, albeit in a style that, as per a stipulation of the Duke of Westminster, would enable it to harmonise with, or at least not detract from, its immediate neighbours. Burns’s wife Mary was the sister of J. P. Morgan, one of the most prominent financiers of that or any other era. Settling in England, where they also acquired a country estate, North Mymms Park in Hertfordshire, the couple infiltrated London Society at the highest level. In due course, their daughter Mary married Lewis ‘Loulou’ Harcourt, who flits through the pages of my book as First Commissioner of Works at the beginning of 1910 and Colonial Secretary at the end, before his eventual elevation to the peerage in 1917. Meanwhile, their second son Walter married Ruth Cavendish-Bentinck, who was herself the product of a high-profile Anglo-American union, besides being the niece of Mrs Ogden Mills, née Ruth Livingston, one of the doyennes of New York’s Four Hundred. Although I’m neither a scholar nor an expert - there are plenty on Instagram who’ve earned those epithets and I’m not among them - I can’t deny that, over the last few months, I’ve derived a great deal of pleasure from rounding up, albeit in amateur and piecemeal fashion, the surviving structures and interiors that, on some level, speak to the social and aesthetic aspirations of the era with which I’m so closely concerned. During the eighteenth century - a period that witnessed its rise as the most fashionable part of London - the architecture of much of Mayfair was defined by its discreet sobriety. Grandeur was as often - more often? - a matter of scale, proportion and regularity as of lavish and individualistic ornament. The faces presented to the man in the street or square by the townhouses of even the wealthiest aristocrats were frequently austere and inscrutable, with nothing to suggest the lavishness of the spaces within. That’s a roundabout way of saying that when there *is* such a suggestion - as here, in the flirtatious glazing bars and massive brackets of the first-floor bay window of No. 71 Brook Street, which was erected in the early 1890s but otherwise differs little from its refaced early Georgian neighbour at No. 69 - my curiosity is immediately piqued. #VisitLondon #LondonCalling #Stucco #Georgian #Victorian #Architecture #SavileClub #BrookStreet #Mayfair #London #England
