Drafting a bodice block pattern. Making a toile to iron out any minor fitting issues tomorrow, although I've drafted this pattern from my own measurements, so not expecting any major problems. Taking the time to self-draft is 100% worth it in my opinion; you get a garment that fits well and needs only minor adjustments. Commercial patterns always seem to involve massive amounts of fiddling about and altering, which I really hate. I've recently started transferring my patterns onto sturdy fabric offcuts. They are much more durable, and much nicer to pin onto fabric when cutting out. This was a really fun stash buster. The pattern is self drafted and I enjoyed figuring out the construction. It is based off the half zip sweater I made last year, with various modifications to fit the scraps of fabric I had. The speckled sweatshirting was from an eBay bundle, and the black fleece was a kind gift from @threadbitchbrighton ♥️ The label is a vintage label I got in the charity shop. Poppers from my stash. The sleeves are elasticated to keep in the warmth. Very pleased with how this turned out. Next time I would make the armscye and sleeves a bit wider, to accommodate wearing layers underneath. For my #MakeNine2023 , I went for something different. . . The idea of picking nine patterns to make doesn't work for me : my brain can't cope with an undone to do list. It feels the need to complete everything as quickly as possible, which isn't really the point of a #MakeNine . Instead I selected nine skills I wanted to work on and this is how I got on. . . I'm pleased that I attempted everything on my list at least once and more than anything else, it really showed me the direction I want to take with my sewing, which is and always will be a hobby I do for fun, because I enjoy the calm it brings me. . . I learnt that You Tube isn't for me. Kudos to those who manage it, I found I didn't have the time or energy to make and post up frequent videos and that's okay. If I want to make sewalong videos from time to time, that's great, but I have no great desire to make it a regular occurrence. . . Even though technically only two of my makes featured zip flies, several more features actual zips, so I think 2023 was definitely the year that I overcame my zip (and buttonhole) phobia (even though I desperately hate sewing on buttons!) . . What I discovered is that I really enjoy drafting my own makes, so I'm definitely planning on doing more of that in the coming year : more pattern making, more hacking, more going off piste really and doing my own thing. Same as in most areas of my life really 🤣 I'd love to take a pattern making course / classes : if anyone knows a good one, do let me know! . . I'm going to do something similar for my #MakeNine2024 , which I'm just in the process of finalising. Grid post roundup: my most recent foray into block drafting, with the help of my 3D scan. It should be no surprised that of the 3 or 4 block methods I tried this time it was "digital draping on 3D scan" that was most successful. It certainly had its own challenges - the "draping" feature of this program is better described as "flattening" the design lines drawn on the avatar. So it comes out super form fitted and needed some trial and error to manipulate that into a wearing ease torso block. But WOW it did its job! There was only minor adjustments made on the toile fitting: sloping shoulder adjustment & refining waist and apex location. The former I attribute to the A pose required by the 3D scan - raising your arms raises the outer shoulder too. I'm procrasti-drafting a sleeve now but really I should be getting onto my long list of sleeveless based garment ideas 🙃 (PS: yes the toile has not been pinned evenly but I noticed too late) #brisbanesews #selfdrafted #selfdrafting
The difference hand basting your zipper in makes 😳 I’ve never tried this technique before, but felt so frustrated that every time I put a zip in duchess satin it would *always* bunch up, like on the left side. I tried hand basting it in first rather than using pins and it came out like a dream! Completely flat seam, no puckering. 🍁🍂 Reversible quilted vest 🍁🍂 That's right, my vest has a wearable reverse side! 🤗 I've previously shared the side I made using paper pieced hexies out of scrap fabrics from old projects. This is the other side and I think I like it even more! 🤭💚🩷💜 Self drafted without side seams and joined at the shoulders using a flat felled seam. I then bound the entire outer edge and added some ties. ✨WASTE COAT✨ Yep, I’m calling this a waste-coat as it’s made with 100% waste. The green corduroy fabric is from a pair of trousers I picked up from a car boot sale without inspecting properly, and they turned out to be unwearable and beyond repair. The lining was leftover from my very first #wiksten Haori jacket and the binding was from a different Kantha quilt Haori jacket. This was a self-drafted pattern and I decided to use up scraps to make a wearable toile (practise piece). I’m not sure this shape suits me, but it is warm and gave me a chance to try out some quilting and binding. It was also a really fun project which has given me the confidence to try more self-drafting in the future 💫

I was feeling a bit experimental this morning and love a bit of pattern hacking, so I thought I'd have a bit of a play around with an idea I had knocking around my head : . . I started with the bodice from the @smallmuseum_ #TateRomper and then self drafted a skirt to go with it. Once attached, I felt like I wanted a bit more length, so I added a ruffle. It's lovely and loose fitting, perfect for this, quite frankly HIDEOUS second summer that's occurring in the UK at the moment!! I've been so hot in my classroom over the last week that I feel like screaming, so hopefully this will do the job of keeping me cool while I attempt to teach 🤣 . . It was a fun and super easy experiment - the end result is quite similar to the Tilly and the Buttons Lyra, which is a pattern I don't own, so that's a bonus! Hacking and self drafting fills me with such joy - sometimes my brain struggles to concentrate on following a pattern (there's that short attention span coming into play again!), so it's really nice to know that I don't always have to. . . I couldn’t wait any longer to share this dress I’m too excited by it😂 The whole thing is just my fav! The fit is flattering with the elasticated back cinching you in (but still comfy ofc cos that’s essential). I am going to amend the bodice pattern for the next one and add in a couple extra darts on the bust to make it fit even smoother along the chest. But I got so many compliments when I wore it today, it makes me feel great and that’s what self drafting is all about for me. Inspired by @tartan_tarlatan's pinafore dress and @wieskunde's version, I made my own! This is made from some vintage bedsheets. The front bodice has armpit darts and waist darts. The back is flat. The skirts are each 2x the length of the bodice piece. It doesn't fit perfectly. I think I need to make the front bodice slightly narrower, and slightly shorter. Not bad for a first try though. Copy cat dress. Bought a RTW dress (last pic) and loved it so much I wanted to replicate it straight away. For the bodice, I used the #tessutipatterns #evadress then for the skirt it was mostly cloning and a tiny bit of #selfdrafting. I wanted to check the overall fit before I cut into the fabric I had in mind. I had 4m of this fabric, so there was a big buffer for trial and error. For this iteration, I used a cotton linen from @spotlightstores. It’s has more drape than the RTW dress. The first skirt I’ve owned in 3 years and a new foray into the world of #SelfDrafting (ignore the wrinkles, I’ve been wearing it all day) It’s not that I don’t like skirts, I’m just picky. But then I saw the one @her.two.hands made from a plum corduroy and I realized that this more fitted, above the knee style is what I’m after. A #SelfDrafted corduroy skirt with a shape I think is somewhere between an A-line and a pencil skirt. Pattern features include: - dartless, single piece for the front - back piece with two darts - invisible side zip - facing for the waist As a new recruit to the #NoToileClub I just went for it and the only adjustment I had to make was increasing the size of my back darts. Fabric is the narrow wale corduroy from @blackbirdfabrics that my mom had leftover from making a pair of pants, making this project a solid #ScrapBuster #SelfDraftedSkirt #BFCorduroy
