Staff and volunteers distributed clothes, connected community members to a variety of resources, and gave out food. Little by little we make progress towards our goals . . Once we get through the clothes and organize this room, we will be going out into the world. I recently lost my Dad's caregiver agency and so I need to hire another so we have the space and he has the safety that allows us to go out and do some direct distribution. We need more bins so that we can transport more of our donations to the city but until then there is still work to be done. Another step in the right direction... I finished another awesome meeting with my @impactinhealthcare family. I feel heard and inspired by this group, literally everyday. They sent me reeling with ideas and opportunities, and I couldn't be more grateful. My partner and I are working as fast as we can, with our lives still in tow, to make our dream a reality. We have made a list of grants, a whopping two, that applies to our model. We are street outreach. We are community care. We are part of the community we want to help. The fact that #arizona criminalizes helping others and feeding others is what's criminal. People should be allowed to help others without the fear of going to jail or being charged with a crime. Following the March 3, 2020 tornado we headed to North Nashville to provide showers to all the folks who had been impacted. We turned into the first parking lot big enough to hold our bus, the parking of @ephesianpbchurch. They graciously allowed us to use their space and opened their doors to accept supplies for neighbors in need. Hygiene is just one component of ending the cycle of homelessness in New York City. Our BCS Shower Bus peer educators work hard to not just provide hot, mobile showers to this population, but to also connect residents to affordable housing. Why? Because housing is healthcare. Our ultimate goal is to provide an opportunity for homeless residents to build a sustainable life with showers of their own. Meet Shamma, BCS Shower Bus Volunteer. Shamma volunteers twice a week at the BCS Shower Bus, our mobile care unit that travels Brooklyn, giving hope and a shower to the street homeless population. Shamma believes that basic hygiene is a human right. Thousands of Brooklynites are unhoused and living on NYC streets. A simple hot shower helps them restore their dignity and allows them to move forward in life. Yesterday our Shower Bus hosted a Health Pop Up Village in Brownsville! As part of our vision of a BROOKLYN FOR ALL, The Bus gathered together some of our most trusted hygiene partners to share any and every health service we could offer: COVID-19 and HIV Testing, free hygiene products, toiletries, and food, and yes that’s right -- free mobile showers! Community members of Brownsville were excited to engage with each other and eager to hear from @nyprojecthope, @67clergycouncil_, @powerof2nyc , @bmshealthcenter, grab some clean and fresh clothing from @hanes, and eat delicious, home cooked food from @living_creativelee. A big thanks to @therighttoshower and @unilever and @hanes for helping to make this health fair possible.
