Located in the heart of Manhattan's financial district, the Broad Exchange Building was, at the time of its construction in 1900-02, the largest office building with the highest estimated real estate value built in Manhattan. Designed by the renowned architectural firm of Clinton & Russell, the Broad Exchange Building contained 326,500 square feet of rentable floor area and was estimated to cost $3.25 million. The builders of the Broad Exchange used all the new technologies introduced during the 1890s in order to create taller structures. The twenty story high building has a steel frame, elevator, and caisson construction. The design of the building is a tripartite composition, common to many of New York's tum-of-the century skyscrapers with a base, shaft, and capital. The three-story base of the building is clad in rusticated granite; the fourteen-story main body or shaft is buff-colored brick with terra-cotta trim; and the three-story attic or capital is granite and terracotta with a copper cornice. Built by the Alliance Realty Company as a speculative office building, the Broad Exchange Building is representative of the commercial building boom in lower Manhattan in the early twentieth century. The proximity of the Broad Exchange Building to the New York Stock Exchange made it one of the most sought-after addresses for brokers and bankers, including for approximately seventy years, the headquarters of Paine, Webber and Company. The thirty-one story, brick Art Deco office building at 21 West Street was constructed in 1929-31 to the designs of the prolific architectural finn of Starrett & Van Vleck. With its bold, set-back profile, and finely detailed brickwork suggestive of woven fabric, this building epitomizes the skyscrapers built in New York during the "Jazz Age," when architects and their clients were searching for ways to represent this period which was seen as more fast-paced, mechanized, and altogether different from what had come before. The architects used brick for its varied color and textural interest, derived the massing from the recent zoning laws, and used space in new ways, incorporating a recessed street-level shopping arcade and comer windows. Like you've all seen on my week long island activities, Maui is open to visitors in areas beyond Lahaina and the west side, where tourism has been severely impacted following the wildfires. It's highly recommended when visiting Maui to explore and enjoy other areas beyond Lahaina, as these areas experienced significant tourism-related business losses from the overnight drop in visitors. There's so much to experience in Pai'a, for example: 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙄 𝙙𝙤 𝙞𝙣 𝙋𝙖𝙞'𝙖? ▪︎ The town is very walkable with cute shops open for splurging. ▪︎ Sup at Pai'a Restaurant & Fish Market for delicious & affordable fare. There's a Mexican restaurant and other cuisine options all over. ▪︎ Pai'a beach is public and open to lounging or surfing ▪︎ Surfing lessons are available in advance ▪︎ Pai'a is the first stop on a highly recommended Road to Hana 10-hour day trip so kill two birds by doing both in a day if you can. . This is the only building in the block which extends completely through the block. Consequently the property transfers reflect the situation which existed on the entire block before lots were subdivided to face either !earl Street or Water Street. Feter James Messier received the original grant; it then went to Jacobus Van Cortlandt, husband of Eva Philipse, although existing records do not indicate when. In his will of 1740, the property with a house on it was bequeathed to his youngest daughter, Mary, wife of Peter Jay. The Jay children sold the property in 1789. The house probably stood until it was replaced in 1858 by the present building, erected by Harry, Seymour, and Malvin C. Burrell of H. Burrell and Company. They established their produce business on the premises. The building is now owned by the New York Landmarks Conservancy which plans to restore it. A six-story brick structure, the building is typical of commercial architecture of the 1850s. The handsome cast-iron storefront features paneled shutters surmounted by a modillioned cornice. In the stories above, the windows with two-over-two double-hung sash have stone lintels and sills. The second story windows are the popular full-length ones of the period. Iron gudgeons which originally held window shutters may be seen at the sides of the windows. It’s the perfect pit stop if you’re staying in Kanab and headed to Zion National Park or Bryce Canyon as it’s only a 20 minute detour. Tips for visiting the Moqui Caverns ⬇️: ‣ Type Sand Caves Parking in google maps for the designated parking lot 🅿️ ‣ Accessible year round, but there is NO shade in the area so if you’re going during the summer season it will be HOT. Please bring plenty of water! ‣ Entry to the sand caves are free! ‣ Although the hike is relatively easy, please make sure you wear shoes with GOOD TRACTION as you will have to scale a little bit of rocks ‣ Always practice Leave No Trace principals and leave the places you visit the way you found them.
