My woman surprised me at work today, celebrating my 2 years since I went to rehab… which was the start of a transformation that will continue the rest of my life. When I left to rehab I assigned myself a mission. “I need to kill this thing inside of me that is making me feel this way.” Well, getting sober was just the beginning. Now I had to face emotions and feelings with no buffer. Nothing to numb or flat out block the emotions of infant and childhood trauma. Of my actions as a child who had been victimized, thus perpetuating trauma. I wasn’t a bad kid. I was just a child. Like many of us, I was messed up before I was in elementary school. THEN came more abandonment. Why am I sharing this? Because now that I am sober, and working on the WHY I was an alcoholic and addict as a teenager (literally had a sobriety date before I was 18). If you are suffering, and trying to self medicate, there is a better way. There is a loving way to face these demons. Turns out I didn’t need to kill this thing inside me. I need to face it. I needed to get to know it. I needed to acknowledge the hurt, the pain, and the suffering. And I needed to show it the scared little boy inside me that it’s going to be ok. That it’s going to grow up to be strong. The pain is going to help others. That the man you will become will be named in books. And then, you will become a man that helps others that are hurting. That are ready to resurrect their lives - like a broken bone - you can heal to become stronger than you were before the break. I love being sober. I am embarrassed for the spectacle I made of myself for all those years. I was downright scary sometimes and it almost cost me my life. But after everything was said and done I have come to realize that it all had to happen to make me who I am - so I can help others. If you’re hurting, I understand. It can get better. The answers are there for anyone courageous enough to face the person in the mirror. #loveyourselfagain #sobervet

In the Poconos and I forgot to order stock for Thanksgiving weekend and decided to stop into the only beverage store in sight. I’ve never been in Harmony Beverage because I assumed they would be like all other beer stores in PA and not have anything NA. Boy was I wrong! Not all Dry January drinks are inspired by a boozy cousins. Tonight we are binging The Expanse before real life kicks in and sipping some decadent hot cocoa with amaretto flavored syrup. Hot Cocoa 3-4 heaping spoonfuls of your favorite dry cocoa powder or chocolate syrup in your favorite mug 2-3 shakes of flavored syrup With a double boiler, microwave, or steam wand steam your favorite milk or substitute to the perfect temp of 165F Mix milk and the chocolate and flavoring with a micro whisk until all chocolate is combined. Being sober or alcohol free in theme parks like Disney and Universal is difficult when you’re looking for something more than just sugary mixed mocktails. At the Rose & Crown in EPCOT you can find a deliciously cold Heineken O.O and boy oh boy was it good!!! SOBERING CHANGES This “before” photo was taken on the 4th of July and I saw it for the first time July 5th 2020… I was disgusted. 2 Days later (7-7-2020) I dropped alcohol for good. In the present day “after photo” you’ll see a man who is a year sober, healthier, wealthier, and more productive than ever before. Change isn’t a bad thing and that remains true even when you have all the appearances of success. From the outside I had my sh*t together. Look at these photos and tell me if you think the “before” guy had his sh*t together… Didn’t think so. Here’s what I see: BEFORE I was trying to outwork my bad habits. NOW I’ve faced the destructive behavior and mindset head on. This is my first year sober in 20+ years and I am very proud… I’m also hungrier than ever to make this next year even more impressive with where I can take my mind, body, and spirit.
