We all have a dark[er] side. I’m not referring to traumas, mental demons or anything as serious. Rather, I’m talking about harmless personality traits, behaviors, habits, and preferences that are less common or socially acceptable. We often hide them for fear of not being ridiculed, rejected or otherwise negatively perceived. Another wonderful social contradiction that’s making everyone feel bad about themselves, right. What has this got to do with my poem? The poem is about satisfying a socially unconventional desire. About an encounter between a woman and a younger man. It’s not based on personal experience, but I do like younger men - not exclusively, of course. I also like secret societies, vampires, gay clubs; and using expletives, sometimes even when I talk to God. See, we’re all quirky. We should only change what’s detrimental. If it's not, cool. Wear it boldly, wear it proudly. Because nothing's wrong with you. People who judge and discriminate, condemn and abuse - they are the ones who need to ask themselves a question or two. Not you. Your life, your choice. (But, again, make sure whatever you do or say doesn't hurt anyone.) “Marcus Mind” All these beggars choose to differ, all these devils swear to God. Late night spills into morning, a funeral procession slow rolls through my mind, the lead car with one headlight out, I am the day that knows it is gone. A phone screen more cracked than I am jaded, scrolling backwards without touch, unearthing old texts and posts long forgotten… like a visiting spirit, like a ghost that haunts, “Hey, old soul, have you ever been young at heart?” That teenage angst has afforded only bitterness with age. The past is a graveyard where the flowers no longer have fragrance, dead representations of lessons unlearned, not to forget the past, but damn, not to live there either. We are merely blips on life’s timeline, bees of the same hive, mole hills given room to identify as mountains only to obstruct our view of the stars, “Hey, stargazer, why waste your time with a blackened sky?” I called to myself from myself, as it echoed in the eternity of waiting.
